Hudl Columns

BASICS:

Opp – Opponent we are playing

Play # - Number of play in opponent film (This is used in practice intercuts)

Qtr – Quarter game is in

Series – Series number for the offense

DN – Down

Dist – Distance to go

First Play – This designates the first play of the offensive series (I think these calls are different than 1st
down calls after gaining a first down), designated with a Y in the column

Play After – This designates any 2nd and Long distance (7+), whether it is a run or a pass. We place an R
(Run) or P (Pass) in this column only on this down and distance. There is a very strong tendency we can
get from this position.

Yd Line – When the offense is on their side of the field, the yard line is designated with a negative. When
the offense is on our side of the 50, it is positive

Gn/Ls – This establishes the outcome of the play, Gain or Loss

Hash – this is designated from a defensive standpoint

Play Type – Run or Pass

PRE-SNAP OFFENSIVE BASED:

Personnel – Offensive personnel (10, 11, 12, 21, etc.)

Form Tree – Wide Receivers to each side Ex: 3x1, 2x2, 2x1

Off Form – Offensive formation – This is the alignment of the OL, TE’s and WR’s. This is put in AFTER any
motions or shifts. So formation offense is in when ball is snapped

Backfield – Again, when ball is snapped. I keep this separate so I can easily sort by formation first then
backfield. Also helps with protection based on where back goes. Ex: A Strong, Pistol, Pistol Strong (2
Backs), I, I Wk

Shift – Any shift by any player is here. Ex: A Jump, Y Trade

Motion – Any motion in the play before snap. Ex: HAC (H WR across formation), ZIN (Z WR motions in
but not across center), YJM (Y TE starts across but comes back to home position.
Off Str – Offensive Strength – Normally to side of TE. I don’t necessarily use this column, but Hudl has to
have it for breakdowns.

Play Dir – Direction play goes, right or left. I don’t use but Hudl needs for some reports

POST-SNAP OFFENSIVE BASED:

Off Play – Actual play

Run Ex: PwrO, PwrG, Toss, etc.

Pass Ex:

o Number Based – 22-22 A Arr (slant, slant (Ball) Slant, Slant, Tailback (A) Arrow)
o Word Based – SltSlt-SltSlt A Arr
o Concept Based – All Slt A Arr

Protections – We count the as follows: 711

 1st number – total people in protection

 2nd number - # of backs in protection
 3rd Number - # TEs in protection

Result – If pass, was it Complete (COM), Incomplete (INC), Scramble Complete (SCC), Scramble
Incomplete (SCI), Interception (INT)

Position – Who carried the ball or who caught the ball

Gap – Which Gap did ball run through

Pass Zone – Which pass area did was ball thrown to
