RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The methodology of this study include several aspects of the research,

such as the location and time of the research, the population and sample of the

research, the method and design of the research, the objective of the research, , the

variable of the research, the data, the technique and instrument for collecting data,

the technique of data analysis, statistical hyphotesis, the procedure of the research.

A. The Location and Time of the Research

The location of the research was at Nahjul Huda at Jl. HH No. 63 Rt

008/001 Kebon Jeruk, west Jakarta. The research had been conducted for

three months, started on January till Maret, 2018.

B. The Population and Sample of the Research

The population of the research was the eight grade students of MTs

Nahjul Huda Jakarta. The writer took out all classes from popolation as

sample of this research which consists of 30 students, which are devided into

two classes, namely class VIII A and class VIII B. For the experiment class

appointed VIII A as the sample that get the treatment, while the other class

(VIII B) get the controlled class in the study.

C. The Method and Design of the Research

The writer has implemented an experiment research with a pre

experiment design. It had been done in eight meetings that consist of one

meeting for giving pre test, six meetings for giving treatment and one meeting

for giving post test. Each meeting was done in one hundred minutes. Each

treatment (learning speaking through role play) was conducted based on

prepared lesson plans.

The design of this research is pre-experiment. The design is as

follows:

R O T O

Explanation :

R : Randomized research subject

O : First Observation

T : Treatment of the research

O : Final observation

D. The Objective of the Research

The objective of the research is to get empirical evidence about Is role

play technique be an effective or not to improve speaking skill, of the second

semester students of the English Department of the University of

Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. HAMKA Jakarta in 2014/2015 Academic Year.

E. The Variable of the Research

This reaserch has involved two variables

1. Independent variable (X)

Variable X : Practicing role play in teaching Transactional Listening-

Speaking of the second semester students of English

Department of the University of Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr.

HAMKA Jakarta in 2014/2015 Academic Year.

2. Dependent variable (Y)

Variable Y : Speaking skill of the second semester students of English

Department of the University of Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr.

HAMKA Jakarta in 2014/2015 Academic Year.

F. The Data

The data of this research is quantitative data. They were the scores of

the students’ entry behavior (before treatment) and the scores of speaking

ability after treatment.

G. The Technique and Instrument for Collecting Data

The writer aplied two speaking test. It was an oral test through

interview as the instrument to get data of students speaking skill. The writer

conducted the data by pre test and post test. The pre test was conducted

before the treatment and the post test was conducted after the treatment.

H. The Technique of Data Analysis

In analyzing the data especially for the pre-test and the post-test score,

the writer used an inferential statistics to analyze it. Therefore, the method in

the inferential statistics as follows:

1. The Hypotheses test

The speaking skill is the effect of performing being tour guide

role play as the treatment. To measure if there has been significant

increase, as the proof that performing being tour guide role play

effective, the difference scores of pre test and the post test have been

analyzed through t-test. The formula is :

Xi - µ o
t=
s/√n

The explanation :

Xi: The average score of the experiment class (before treatment)

µo: The average score of the experiment data

n: Total of sample student of experiment class

s: Variant of experiment class1

I. Statistical Hyphotesis

The statistical hypotheses proposed in this study are as follows:

Ho : µ1 = µo

Hi : µo> µ1

press). p. 92.
47

Note :

µ1 = the average score of the experiment class (after treatment).

µ2 = the average score of the experiment class (before treatment)

Hi : The using of role play is effective way in practicing the speaking skill

of the second semester students of English Department of the

University of Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. HAMKA Jakarta in

2014/2015 Academic Year.

Ho : The using of role play is not effective way in practicing the speaking

skill of the second semester students of English Department of the

University of Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. HAMKA Jakarta in

2014/2015 Academic Year.

J. The Procedures of the Research

1. Interviewing the English students of Muhammadiyah University Prof.

Dr. HAMKA to ask their difficulties in speaking English.

2. Arranging the problem statement.

3. Arranging the hypothesis.

4. Asking the permission to Head of English Department for conducting the

research on Transaction Listening- Speaking class.

5. Asking the syllabus of the second semester of English Department

HAMKA University to the Head of English Department.

6. Selecting the material which is appropriate to the treatment will be given

on the second semester.

7. Picking out the randomize sample at HAMKA University.

48

8. Planning the schedule of treatment.

9. Arranging the instrument for the pre test.

10. Conducting the pre test on April 30th, 2015

11. Conducting treatment (practicing be a tour guide) on June 5th, 2015 up to

July 9th 2015.

12. Conducting the post test on June 16th, 2015.

13. Analizing the data

14. Making the report of data.
