CHAPTER An Overview of
1 Human Resource
Management

Individual Assignment
This assignment requires students to collect newspapers and business journal articles related to human
resource management. At suitable times during the teaching semester, perhaps after the completion
of each topic, students may be asked to:
• Summarize these articles, and/or
• Present one or more of their summaries orally to the class.

Set parameters for the assignment, such as whether the materials must be from print media or can
include online articles, whether the materials must be current or not, and whether they should be in
any particular language.

Group Assignment
This assignment requires students to visit a local office of any of the governmental bodies relevant to
human resource management and report on the functions of the office, problems faced by the officers
concerned and so on.
Visits could be made to the Labour Office, Trade Union Affairs Department, Industrial Relations
Department, Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Employees Provident Fund office,
Employees Social Security Organization office and so on. Visits could be made to state and local
level offices as well as to headquarters as appropriate. Students could also report on the website of the
organization they choose to visit. Students must be encouraged to prepare a plan before they visit the
department or office of their choice. This plan may be assessed as part of their assignment.
