ROEHAMPTON STUDENT UNION

About
rundown
Roehampton's Student Union [RSU] may be different than most institutions in regards to how they run
their student life and support services. At many American Institutions, there are various departments
that support students, organize events and provide services, mainly supervised by full-time
employees of the institution.

However, at Roehampton, the students' union provides those same services, but under the
leadership of a student-led, democratic organization. From volunteering and societies to elections,
great entertainment and much more, RSU provides something for everyone. Separated into three
main categories, Student Life, Student Voice and Student Support, the RSU is funded separately
from the greater institution and adheres to their own articles and bylaws.

Elected student officials have their own duties and responsibilities to fulfill on behalf of the student
body of the University. Complete listing of roles and corresponding descriptions can be found HERE.

What They Do
The main goal of the RSU is to make the best of and improve the student experience at Roehampton.
They do so through the organization, promotion and support of events and services such as...

STUDENT life
Studying abroad is perhaps one of the most exciting times of your life! New people, places, food and
culture. With that, you have to let go of what you may be used to and embrace the new. College life in
the UK, and especially London, is similar but different to what you're accustomed to at home. Below
we've laid out some of the features of Roehampton University so you can feel right at home.

Academic
Modules - Here your courses are referred to as modules. With the assistance of your study abroad

be perfectly fine.
Library - In 2017 we opened our new, state-of-the-art library. With over hundreds of thousands of
books and resources, you'll have everything you need to succeed. There are also private study
rooms available to reserve, laptops you can check-out for use, and wi-fi and printing available
throughout. There is also a café to get your caffeine fix while studying or collaborating. Note: you
do need your student ID card to access the library and its resources.

Social

The Union provides events, activities, social programs and support services for all our students.

there's one you can't find, the Union will help you create one! From film to vegan and Disney,
there's something for everyone.
Sports - There are also plenty of ways to stay moving on campus. We have sports you may be
familiar with such as yoga and cheerleading, and some others you may not have like badminton
and rowing. A complete listing and guide on how to join can be found HERE through the Student
Union.

GUIDE TO London
TRANSPORTATION

THE TUBE
The underground transportation in London may seem intimidating at first, but after a day you'll
have it mastered!
Make sure you have your Oyster card. Your Oyster card is your ticket to everywhere. You can
often purchase and "top up" or re-load your balance at any tube station. If you have questions,
don't be afraid to ask a staff member for assistance, they're super friendly.
Tap out! Not only do you need to tap your Oyster card to get on the tube, but when you exit as
well. Fares are based on how long you use the system, so you need to let the system know
when you've arrived. Note: charges to your card don't hit till the end of the day to find the most
cost-effective option for all your travels.
Shhhh...despite how busy it can get, the tube generally is pretty quiet and there's not much
talking amongst passengers. Everyone is focused on getting to their destination or engrossed in
the latest Time Out paper.
For a handy walkthrough of it all, check out THIS VIDEO.

THE BUS
The infamous red, double-decker busses are synonymous with London!
Again, have your Oyster card ready. Oyster is really the only way to pay for buses and you can't
top up on a bus.
You do have to signal to get a bus to stop. Just sticking your hand out as it approaches works.
Also, make sure to hit the "stop" button before you need to get off as well.
Buses typically are cheaper than the tube or taxi and riding in the front on a double decker really
is as cool as you would think.

TAXIS
Taxis are definitely still prominent in the city, but also your most expensive option.
The official taxis are black and iconic in style and most accept card and cash payments. No
need to tip.
Note: Uber is available, kind of, but nobody knows the area like an official taxi driver.

roehamptonabroad@roehampton.ac.uk
GUIDE TO London
WHERE TO GET...
GROCERIES
Waitrose and Marks & Spencer Food Halls are more expensive grocery stores with organic
produce and specialty items.
Sainsbury's/Tesco/Co-Op may look like convenience stores, and they certainly have everything a
convenience store would have, but more. If you need some more ingredients for dinner or a quick
bite, they have you covered.
Asda and Aldi, think of Walmart or your local superstore. These have it all but are located more so
in the suburbs and not necessarily in the heart of the city, there are some close to campus though.

MEDICINE & BEAUTY

Boots and Superdrug are the main drugstores in the city. The bigger the store the bigger the
selection. They have everything from toothpaste and shampoo to hair dryers and even quick and
easy lunches. Also stop here if you need any makeup or quick first aid items.

HOME GOODS
Primark is your stop if you need basic and cheap home goods, they also have plenty of clothes,
shoes and accessories.
TK Maxx, the UK equivalent of TJ Maxx has a variety of goods at great prices. Not all stores have a
full selection however. The one on Charing Cross has a good selection of clothes and home goods
and more.
Argos is also handy for any miscellaneous shopping needs. You can order online and pick up in
store when ready. There are locations everywhere!

EATING
You certainly won't go hungry during your time in London! With such a diverse city,
the food options are just as diverse. Whatever you may be craving, you're sure to
find it somewhere. Below we listed some of the most common and popular options.

Pret A Manger - Like Starbuck's but a British staple, you'll see them everywhere and nothing
beats a sandwich from Pret!

Costa - Another mainstream coffee chain, in need of a coffee fix? This is your answer.

Paul's - Want a croissant or something sweet and/or savory to go with your coffee? Paul's
always smells of fresh bread and other goods.

LEON - A healthy fast food chain serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Abo Kado - Need a quick sushi or bento box fix? Abo Kado has plenty of options if you're on
the go.

Itsu - Another sushi spot! You'll see them everywhere and with good reason! Check out the
latest monthly special.

Nando's - Craving some chicken instead of fish? Nando's is an Afro-Portuguese inspired

chain. Once you go you'll understand the obsession.

Pubs - There are thousands of English pubs in London! So whether it's a drink and chat
after work or you need a traditional English breakfast, they have you covered.

PRO TIPS

Register your Oyster card

Registering your Oyster card with the TFL, Transport for London, makes it easy to check
your remaining balance, top up online or in the app and report your card if it gets lost or
stolen. You can do so HERE.

Download Citymapper app (iOS & Android)

Even Londoners don't know how they got around without this app. Just plug in where you
want to go and the app will provide you with all possible ways to get there, including time and
fare estimates. You can even save your home and work addresses for quick reference.

No sales tax
If you're coming from the United States you're probably familiar with sales tax. Well, in the
UK tax is already included in the price you see. So, when you go to the register there are no
surprises or additional math to calculate.

Tipping
Many sit-down restaurants now include a 'service charge' to cover tipping. However, if none
is listed, then 10-12% is a respectable tip, depending on the level of service. If service is
terrible, feel free to not tip at all!

Cell phones
If you're in London for an extended time, it is helpful to get a local SIM card for your
smartphone. Main providers include, Three (3), Vodafone, and O2. Stop in any of their stores
and you can easily purchase a card for as little or much data as you'd like. They will help you
put in your new card and you can top up if needed as well.
