Online
Activity There will be videos uploaded from the teacher for the students introducing each
subject. Students will be advised to watch the videos before starting the activity. The
teacher will record an introduction video of the subject, explaining fractions. Briefly
describing whole numbers, mixed numbers, denominators, and numerators. The
textbook will also be an aid to the students. In the video the teacher will also introduce
the simulation for the subject. In this SOL standard the simulation is Toy Factory (Set
Models of Fractions).

After watching the video the students will be directed to the explorelearning.com. The
teacher has the option to provide the link to the website or to give directions on how to
get to the particular activity.
The website will take you to the opening Gizmos page, there you will be able to browse
or sign up for free. Students should began to follow the given directions, “Create a set
of stuffed animals: monkeys, giraffes, and rabbits. Toys can be painted red, green, or
blue. Describe the makeup of the set (animals or colors) with fractions. Arrange the toys
into groups to simplify the fractions.”

This simulation will help students understand and visualize that a fraction shows the
relationship between a part and a whole. Students will also be able to see that the
denominator represents the total number of equal parts in a whole, and that the
Pedagogy

numerator represents the number of parts being referred to.

When the simulation has been completed the students will have gained more
knowledge about fractions and how they “look”. After the assignment has been
completed the students will get into a class chat and discuss one thing that the Toy
Factory has helped them with, and also express on thing that they liked and one thing
that they did not like. The students should also be aware that they could use the
microphone device to express their thoughts.
