All The Good Times Are Past And Gone
Traditional

I IV I
I wish to the Lord I'd never been born,
V
Or died when I was young,
I IV I
I never would've seen your sparkling blue eyes,
V I
Or heard your lying tongue.

Chorus:
I IV I
All the good times are past and gone,
V
All the good times are o'er,
I IV I
All the good times are past and gone,
V I
Little darling, don't you weep no more,

Now don’t you see that lonesome dove,

Flying from pine to pine,
He's mourning for his own true love,
Just like I mourn for mine. (chorus)

Now can’t you see that lonesome train,

Going around the bend,
It's taking away my own true love,
Who’ll never return again. (chorus)

Come back, come back, my own true love,

Come stay awhile with me,
If ever I had a friend in this world,
You’ve been a friend to me. (chorus)

Banks of the Ohio G
Traditional

I V
I asked my love to take a walk,
I
Just to walk a little ways,
IV
As we walked then we would talk,
I V I
All about our wedding day.

chorus:
I V
Only say that you'll be mine,
I
In our home we'll happy be,
IV
Down beside where the waters flow,
I V I
On the banks of the Ohio.

I took her by her lily-white hand,

And led her down that bank of sand,
There I pushed her in to drown,
I saw her as she floated down.

(chorus)

Returning home about twelve past one,

I said, “Dear God, what have I done?"
I killed the girl I love, you see,
Because she would not marry me.

(chorus)

The very next day at half past four,

Sheriff’s men knocked at my door,
Said, "Young man, come now and go,
Down to the banks of the Ohio."

(chorus)
A
Blue Moon of Kentucky
Bill Monroe

I IV
Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shining,
I V
Shine on the one that's gone and proved untrue,
I IV
Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shining,
I V I
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue.
IV
It was on a moonlight night
I
The stars were shining bright,
IV
They whispered from on high
I V
Your love has said goodbye,
I IV
Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shining,
I V I
Shine on the one that's gone and said goodbye.
Blue Ridge Cabin Home A
Flatt & Scruggs

I IV
There's a well-beaten path on this old mountain side,
V I
Where I wandered when I was a lad,
I IV
And I wandered alone to the place I call home,
V I
In those Blue Ridge hills far away.

Chorus:
I IV
Oh I love those hills of old Virginia,
V I
From those Blue Ridge hills I did roam,
I IV
When I die won't you bury me on the mountain,
V I
Far away near my Blue Ridge mountain home.

Now my thoughts wander back to that ramshackle shack,

In those Blue Ridge hills far away,
My mother and dad were laid there to rest,
They are sleeping in peace together there.

Chorus

I return to that old cabin home with a sigh,

I've been longing for days gone by,
When I die won't you bury me on that old mountain side,
Make my resting place upon the hills so high.

Chorus
Boil Them Cabbage (song & instrumental) – key of A
traditional

chorus:
I IV
Boil them cabbage down,
I V
Turn that hoecake round,
I IV
The only song that I can sing
I V I
Is “Boil Them Cabbage Down.”

Grandma had a muley cow,

Muley since she’s born,
Took a jaybird forty years
To fly from horn to horn.

(chorus)

Wish I had a nickel,

Wish I had a dime,
Wish I had a pretty little girl
To love me all the time.

(chorus)

Wish I had a needle and thread,

As fine as I could sew,
I'd sew that girlie to my coat,
And down the road I'd go.

(chorus)

Love her in the summertime,

Love her in the fall,
If I can’t have my own true love
I won’t have none at all.

(chorus)
Bury Me Beneath The Willow B
Traditional

I IV
My heart is sad and I am lonely
I V
For the only one I love,
I IV
When shall I see her, oh no never,
I V I
'Til we meet in heaven above.

I IV
Oh, bury me beneath the willow,
I V
Under the weeping willow tree,
I IV
So she will know where I am sleeping,
I V I
And perhaps she'll weep for me.

She told me that she dearly loved me,

How could I believe it untrue,
Until the angels softly whisper,
She will prove untrue to you. With capo:

My Cabin In Caroline A
Flatt & Scruggs

I IV I
I'll be going back someday and for her I'll never stray,
V I
And the cabin in the hills of Caroline.

How I love her now and I know I always will.

Chorus
Cluck Old Hen
Traditional

I VII I IV
I had an old hen, had a wooden leg,

I V I
Ain't laid an egg since way last spring,

She lays eggs for the railroad men,
Sometimes one, sometimes two,
Sometimes enough for the whole dang crew.

Cluck old hen, cluck and sing,

Ain’t laid an egg since way last spring,
Cluck old hen, cackle & squawk,
Next time you cackle you’ll cackle in the pot.

Dark Hollow
Bill Browning

I V I
I’d rather be in some dark hollow,
IV I
Where the sun don’t ever shine,
IV
Than to be at home alone just knowin’ that you’re gone,
I V I
It would cause me to lose my mind.

Chorus:
I V I

IV I
Carry me farther on down the track,
IV
I’m goin’ away, I’m leavin’ today,
I V I

Footprints in the Snow G
from Bill Monroe

I IV
Some folks like the summertime when they can walk about,
V I
Strolling through the meadow green, it’s pleasant there’s no doubt,
IV
But give me the wintertime when the snow is on the ground,
V I
For I found her when the snow was on the ground.

Chorus:
I V
I traced her little footprints in the snow,
I
I found her little footprints in the snow, Lord,
IV
I bless that happy day that Nellie lost her way,
V I
For I found her when the snow was on the ground.

I dropped in to see her there was a big round moon,

Her mother said she just stepped out but would be returning soon,
I found her little footprints and I traced them through the snow,
I found her when the snow was on the ground.

Now she’s up in heaven, she’s with the angel band,

I know I’m going to meet her in that promise land,
But every time the snow falls it brings back memories,
For I found her when the snow was on the ground.

Gold Watch and Chain B
Traditional, from the singing of the Carter Family

(I) IV I
Darling, how can I stay here without you,
V I
I have nothing to cheer my poor heart,
IV I
This old world would seem sad, love, without you,
V I
Tell me now that we're never to part.

Chorus:
IV I
Oh I'll pawn you my gold watch and chain, love,
V I
And I'll pawn you my gold diamond ring,
IV I
I will pawn you this heart in my bosom,
V I
Only say that you'll love me again.

Take back all the gifts you have given,

Save a ring and a lock of your hair,
And a card with your picture upon it,
It's a face that is false, but is fair.

Tell me why that you do not love me,

Tell me why that your smile is not bright,
Tell me why you have grown so cold-hearted,
Is there no kiss for me, love, tonight.

Oh, the white rose that blooms in the garden,

It grows with the love of my heart,
It broke through on the day that I met you,
It will die on the day that we part.
High on a Mountain G
Ola Belle Reed

I VII I
As I looked at the valleys down below,
VII I
They were green just as far as I could see,
VII I IV
As my memory returned, oh how my heart did yearn,
I VII I
For you and the days that used to be.

Chorus:
I VII I IV
High on a mountain oh, wind blowin' free,
I V I
Thinking about the days that used to be,
VII I IV
High on a mountain oh, standin' all alone,
I V I
Wondering where the years of my life have flown.

I VII I
Oh, I wonder if you ever think of me,
VII I
Or if time has blotted out your memory,
VII I IV
As I listen to the breeze whisper gently through the trees,
I VII I
I'll always cherish what you meant to me.

(Chorus)
How Mountain Girls Can Love G
Stanley Brothers

Chorus:

IV I
Get down boys, go back home,
V I
Back to the girl you love,
IV I
Treat her right, never roam,
V I
How mountain girls can love.

I
Riding the night in the high cold winds
V I
On the trail of the old lonesome pine.

Thinking of you and feeling so blue,

V I
Wondering why I left you behind.

Chorus

I
Remember the night we strolled down the lane,
V I
Our hearts were gay and happy then,

You whispered to me when I held you close,

V I
We hoped that night would never end.

Chorus
I Saw the Light A
Hank Williams

I
I wandered so aimless, life filled with sin,
IV I
I wouldn’t let my dear Savior in,

Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night,

V I
Praise the Lord, I saw the light.

Chorus:
I
I saw the light, I saw the light,
IV I
No more darkness, no more light,

Now I’m so happy, no sorrow in sight,

V I
Praise the Lord, I saw the light.

Just like a blind man I wandered along,

Worries and fears I claimed for my own,
Then like the blind man that God gave back his sight,
Praise the Lord, I saw the light.

(Chorus)

I was a fool to wander and stray,

Straight is the gate and narrow the way,
Now I have traded the wrong for the right,
Praise the Lord, I saw the light.

(Chorus)
I'll Fly Away Bb
Traditional

I
Some bright morning when this life is o’er,
IV I
I'll fly away,

To that home on God's celestial shore,

V I
I'll fly away.

Chorus:
I
I'll fly away, oh Glory,
IV I
I'll fly away (in the morning),

When I die hallelujah by and by,

V I
I'll fly away.

Just a few more weary days and then

I'll fly away,
To a land where joys will never end,
I'll fly away.

When the shadows of this life have gone,

I'll fly away,
Like a bird from these prison walls I'll fly,
I'll fly away.

Oh how glad and happy when we meet,

I'll fly away,
No more cold iron shackles on my feet,
I'll fly away.
In the Pines
E
Traditional (Bill Monroe version)

I IV I
The longest train I ever saw
V I
Went down that Georgia line,
IV I
The engine passed at six o’clock
V I
And the cab passed by at nine.

Chorus:
I IV I
In the pines, in the pines, where the sun never shines,
V I
And we shiver when the cold wind blows.
IV I
Wooo oo ooooo, wooo oo oooooo,
V I
Wooo oo ooooo oo ooooooooo.

I asked my captain for the time of day,

He said he throwed his watch away,
A long steel rail and a short cross tie,
I’m on my way back home.

(chorus)

Little girl, little girl, what have I done

That makes you treat me so,
You caused me to weep, you caused me to moan,
You caused me to leave my home.

(chorus)
Jingle Bells
James Lord Pierpont (1822–1893)

Chorus:
I
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way,
IV I II V
Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh,
I
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way,
IV I V I
Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh.

I IV
Dashing through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh,
V I
O’er the fields we go, laughing all the way,
I IV
Bells on bobtails ring, making spirits bright,
V I V
What fun it is to laugh and sing a sleighing song tonight, oh…

Chorus

A day or two ago I thought I’d take a ride,

And soon Miss Fanny Bright was seated by my side,
The horse was lean and lank, misfortune seemed his lot,
We got into a drifted bank and then we got upsot, oh…

Chorus

"Jingle Bells" is one of the best-known and commonly sung winter songs in
the world. It was written by James Lord Pierpont (1822–1893) in 1850, and
published under the title "One Horse Open Sleigh" in 1857. Even though it is
commonly referred to as a Christmas song, it was actually written and sung for
Thanksgiving. It was mistakenly branded as a Christmas song because being
extremely popular at Thanksgiving, it was sung again around Christmas.
According to the Medford, MA Historical Society, the song was inspired by the
town's popular sleigh races during the 1800s.
John Hardy
Traditional

IV I
John Hardy was a desperate little man,
IV I
He carried two guns every day,
IV I
Shot down a man on the West Virginia line,
V
You ought’a seen John Hardy get away,
I
Ought’a seen John Hardy get away.

IV I
He went up to Virginia ‘round the Keystone Bridge,
IV I
He thought he would surely be free,
IV I
Up steps a sheriff and takes him by the arm,
V
Saying, "Johnny, come along with me,
I
Johnny, come along with me."

He sent for his mama and his papa, too,

To come and go his bail,
But there was no bail for a murder charge,
So they threw John Hardy back in jail,
Threw John Hardy back in jail.

John Hardy had a pretty little girl,

The dress she wore was blue,
The very last thing that she said to him,
Said, "Johnny, I been true to you,
Johnny, I been true to you."
Just When I Needed You

I IV
Just when I needed you, you left and went away,
I V
You made my life so blue both night and day,
I IV
You left me here behind with a troubled, worried mind,
I V I
So broken hearted too, just when I needed you.

Chorus:
I IV I
I cried, I cried, I prayed, I tried,
V
To forget you and never call your name,
I IV I
What a shame, what a shame, you’re the one that was to blame,
IV I V I
You’re the one that proved untrue just when I needed you.

I IV
You said it’s best we part and never love again,
I V
And though it broke my heart I won’t complain,
I IV
You know I love you still and, dear, I always will,
I V I
Although you proved untrue just when I needed you.

(Chorus)
Keep On The Sunny Side Bb
Ada Blenkhorn & J. Howard Entwisle, 1899

I IV I
There's a dark and a troubled side of life,
V
There's a bright and a sunny side too,
I
Though we meet with the darkness and strife,
V I
The sunny side we also may view.

Chorus:
I IV I
Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side,
V
Keep on the sunny side of life,
I IV I
It will help us every day, it will brighten all the way,
I IV I V I
If we keep on the sunny side of life.

Oh, the storm and its fury broke today,

Crushing hopes that we cherish so dear,
Clouds and storms will in time pass away,
The sun again will shine bright and clear.

chorus

Let us greet with a song of hope each day,

Though the moment be cloudy or fair,
Let us trust in our Savior always,
To keep us everyone in His care.

Love Of The Mountains
Allen H. Mills

I IV I
Two trees on a hillside of the mountain,
V IV I
Always looking up towards the sky,
IV I
Reminds me of my papa and my mama,
V IV I
Who lived there eighty years before they died.

Chorus:
I IV I
Now a bright moon is shining in the valley,
V IV I
An old wagon leans against a stack of hay,
IV I
Two graves on a hillside by a cabin,
V IV I
My mom and dad are resting there today.

The burning of the green wood on the fireplace,

The fallen snow around the red bud trees,
The branches of the laurel by the creek bed,
And the rippling waters of the gentle stream.

Papa used to talk about the young days,

When he and Mama first were settled there,
He spoke about the love of the mountains,
That he and Mama shared together there.

Ocean of Diamonds G
Jimmy Martin

I IV
Some people drink champagne out under the stars,
V I
While others drink wine leaning over a bar,

Chorus:
IV I
I'd give a ocean of diamonds, a world filled with flowers,
V I
To hold you closely for just a few hours,
IV
Hear you whisper softly that you love me too,
V I
Would change all the dark clouds to bluest of blue.

I IV
I don't drink their champagne and I don't drink their wine,
V I
So if you refuse me my poor heart will pine,
IV
I'll be so lonely till the day that I die,
V I
And as long as I live, dear, you'll still hear me cry.
Old Home Place A
Mitch Jayne & Dean Webb

I III IV I
It's been ten long years since I left my home
V
In the hollow where I was born,
I III IV I
Where the cool fall nights make the wood smoke rise
V I
And the foxhunter blew his horn.

I fell in love with a girl from the town

I thought that she would be true,
I ran away to Charlottesville
And worked in a sawmill crew.

Chorus:
V I
What have they done with the old home place,
II V
Why did they tear it down,
I III IV I
And why did I leave the plow in the field
V I
And look for a job in the town.

Well the girl ran off with somebody else

The tariffs took all my pay,
And now I stand where the old home stood
Before they took it away.

Now the geese fly south and the wind grows cold
As I stand here and hang my head,
I've lost my love, I've lost my home
And now I wish that I was dead.

The Road Into Town G
(© Christopher Stuart, Backcountry Music, 2002)

I V I
Back in my childhood on a winter day,
V
I can still remember the coal man say,
I V I
Sign these papers, sell us the ground,
V I
And we’ll build you a road into town.

Chorus:
IV I
All I’ve ever known,
V
Is this old mountain home,
I IV
I’d rather sleep on rocky ground,
I V I
If I had to travel the road into town.

Daddy was burdened, he hung his head down,

We waited for an answer, he made not a sound,
Mama was crying and silently prayed,
But we all shouted when we heard Daddy say,

Chorus

So many changes have come to these hills,

Mama and Daddy are lying there still,
Coal company folded, the mines have shut down,
The only thing left is the road into town.

Chorus
Road Into Town: Chris Stuart - Desert Lullaby lyrics G

Sleep little baby, sleep ‘til the morning comes

Mama will keep you from all harm
Sleep little baby under the western sky
I’ll sing you a desert lullaby

Sleep little baby, sleep on your mama’s knee

Don’t call the wolf and coyote
Sleep little baby, hush baby don’t you cry
I’ll sing you a desert lullaby

Dream little baby, dream of a valley green

Far over mountains by the sea
Dream little baby, one day no more you’ll roam
Then you’ll awake and find a home

Sleep little baby, sleep ‘til the morning comes

Mama will keep you from all harm
Sleep little baby under the western sky
I’ll sing you a desert lullaby

Wabash Cannonball Bb
Traditional, from the singing of Roy Acuff

V I
From the queen of flowing mountains to the Southbell by the shore,
IV
She's mighty tall and handsome, she’s known quite well by all,
V I
She's the combination on the Wabash Cannonball.

Chorus:
I IV
Listen to the jingle, the rumble and the roar,
V I
As she glides along the woodland, through the hills and by the shore,
IV
Hear the mighty rush of the engine, hear the lonesome hobo's call,
V I
You’re traveling through the jungle on the Wabash Cannonball.

She came down from Birmingham one cold December day,

As she rolled up to the station you could hear all the people say,
“There's a girl from Tennessee, she's long and she's tall
She came down from Birmingham on the Wabash Cannonball.”

Our eastern states are dandy, so the people always say,

From New York to St. Louis and Chicago by the way,
From the hills of Minnesota where the rippling waters fall,
No changes can be taken on the Wabash Cannonball.

Here's to Daddy Claxton, may his name forever stand,

And always be remembered ‘round the courts of Alabam',
His earthly race is over the curtains 'round him fall,
We'll carry him on to victory on the Wabash Cannonball.

Wildwood Flower D
Traditional (from the Carter Family)

I V I
Oh, I'll twine with my mingles and waving black hair,
V I
With the roses so red and the lilies so fair,
IV I
And the myrtle so bright with the emerald hue,
V I
The pale amanita and eyes look like blue.

I V I
Oh, I'll dance, I will sing and my laugh shall be gay,
V I
I will charm every heart, in his crown I will sway,
IV I
When I woke from my dreaming, my idols were clay,
V I
All portion of love had all flown away.

Oh, he taught me to love him and promised to love,

And to cherish me over all others above,
How my heart is now wond'ring no misery can tell,
He's left me no warning, no words of farewell.

Oh, he taught me to love him and called me his flower,

That was blooming to cheer him through life's dreary hour,
Oh, I long to see him and regret the dark hour,
He's gone and neglected this pale wildwood flower.

Your Love Is Like A Flower A
Carter Family

I IV
It was long, long ago in the moonlight,
I V
We were sitting on the banks of a stream,
I IV
When you whispered so sweetly, I love you,
I V I
As the waters murmured a tune.

Chorus:
I IV
Oh they tell me your love is like a flower,
I V
In the springtime blossoms so fair,
I IV
In the fall then it withers away dear,
I V I
And they tell me that's the way of your love.

I remember the night, little darling,

We were talking of days gone by,
When you told me you always would love me,
And for me your love would never die.

Chorus

It was spring when you whispered these words, dear,

The flowers were all blooming so fair,
But today as the snow falls around us,
I can see that your love is not there.
