1. MC : Signifies core course. If a core course is offered as minor elective also, then

it will be identified with MC/ME. A Minor elective course will be identified as
ME.

3. MEC: Minor elective. It is marked uniformly against each minor elective in each
semester as 3 credits. But it need not be of 3 credits each. However, the students
will have to take in total 9 credits of minor elective courses during the MA (Mass
Communication) programme.

Notes:
1. The marks/grades of the educational tours and internship will remain with the department. The
marks/grades of the educational tour and internships will be sent to the office of the COE at the end of
the fourth /final semester for the preparation of the final mark sheet.

2. Minor electives will be taken by the students in other departments and faculties as per their choice. The
office of the COE will be informed about the choices of the minor electives by the students at the end
of the semester before the term-end examinations.

3. Internships/Educational tours will be decided by the department. The students will be given practical
assignments during the tour. These will be done either individually or in groups. The reports on each
assignment will have to be submitted to the department after the completion of the tour. These then
will be graded.

4. The educational tours will have the financial subsidy support from the university as per rules for the
students and the accompanying teachers.

This course introduces to the students the basic concepts, models and theories of Communication.
Most of these basic concepts, models and principles evolved in the western societies. In the formal
classes, the treatment of the topics will focus on the applicability of these in the Indian context. The
course will also concentrate on the alternative perspectives including the Indian perspective of
Communication.

HISTORY OF MEDIA AND PRESS LAWS

This course will provide the students with the historical background of the media – the press (print),
radio, and television. It will also touch upon the recent developments in new media such as satellite,
cable, Internet, etc. The purpose of this course is to help the students to construct a historical
framework in which major technological discoveries will be highlighted. They will also be required
to analyze how these technological discoveries converged to give birth to major media and how these
have brought about a fundamental change in the society and culture of communication.

PRINT JOURNALISM: REPORTING, WRITING & EDITING

This course introduces to the students the process and art of print journalism. It will provide the
students the skills of reporting and editing of events following certain established rules and
conventions. The students will be given practical assignments to drill the skills needed for reporting,
writing and editing. Emphasis will be given to the practical assignments that the students will be
doing to complete their portfolio. A separate assignment sheet will be given to the students for the
portfolio.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

This is a practical course on listening, speaking, writing and visualization. The students will be
taught the skills of speaking in groups and public. They will be taught how the skills should be
applied to a formal gathering and in an informal one. The students should also develop their writing
abilities: usage of appropriate words, application of grammar, short sentences, structuring of the
pieces, etc. The students will be taught the skills of creating the visuals. They should be able to
select good visuals from the bad ones. A separate assignment sheet indicating the entire practical
exercises that each of the students will have to do for a portfolio during the session will be given at
the beginning of the session.

In this course on the films of Satyajit Ray, the students will be exposed to the various facets

PROGRAM PLANNING

This paper will teach the students how to plan for television programme. It will take the
students step by step from the inception of idea to the finished product.

Unit-1: Basic Issues in Programme Planning


 Idea, subject matter, issues, themes
 The treatment, the need of the subject matter/idea - dictates the genre
 Decision on the programme format
 The programme: what in a programme? Who will do hat? How will that be done? Director, actors’
scriptwriter --- main forces? Role of finance
 People with finance approach the director and talents
 The directors/talents approach the financier

Unit-2: Production Planning and Budgeting


 Above the line cost: hiring/negotiating the services of: talents, directors, script writers, set designer,
editor, graphic arts, assistant directors, secretarial assistants
 Below the line cost: Decision on hiring technical service like engineers, camerapersons, electricians,
etc.
 Other overheads and contingencies: a typical budget (prototype)
 Decision and finalization of budget, talents and distribution of responsibilities

Unit-3: Scheduling Production


 Plan meeting : preparing the production schedules, fixing shooting dates (consideration of weather,
socio and cultural festivities) and editing dates
 Booking studios, equipment, obtaining police clearances (in case of out door shooting), settling
copywriter, royalties, etc.
 Transport arrangement, booking of tickets, booking accommodation, facilities for crew members,
talents and other management personnel, set designing in studio/outdoor, floor planning

 Mapping each days schedule step by step; lists of every little need

Unit-4: Managing Production


 Coordinating the coordinators, always checking the checklist and re-checking with other

 Quantitative and Analytical Methods.

percentage, simple interest, average, algebra formulae, angles, triangles, quadrilaterals and
basic theorems, perimeter, area, volume of square and cube shapes.

PART - II
The Part – II test will be on the Skills of Writing. The question paper will be in English only.
The skills of writing will be tested on the following:
1) Paragraph Writing on some general topic: 200 words
2) Story Writing on some given information : 200 words
3) Essay Writing on a current topic 500 words
4) Plan of Presentation of a given topic 100 words
5) Translation (English to Hindi)
Or
Précis Writing (For those whose mother tongue in not Hindi)

This test will carry 100 marks. The test will be of 2 hours. The final merit list for admissions
will be made from total of the scores of Part I & Part II.

The candidates will be permitted to write Part II either in English or in Hindi and not in both.
The candidates should indicate their preference of language ahead of the test, preferably in
the admission form.

MA (Mass Communication) degree Programme

1. A course of study leading to MA (Mass Communication) degree shall be conducted by the


university and shall be of two-year duration spread over four semesters.

2. A candidate holding a Bachelor's degree in any subject with 50% marks in aggregate
of all three years under the 10+2+3 system will be eligible to apply.

3. The candidate will not be permitted to enroll in MA (Mass Communication) degree course
with any other full-time degree/diploma course.

4. The candidates who are in service should apply through proper channel with "no objection
certificate" and 'study leave' certificate for two years from the authority.

5. The admission will be made through competitive admission test in order of merit. The
category-wise distribution of seats will be as per the rules of the Government of India. The
supernumery quota of seats will be as per the rules of the university

6. The MA (Mass Communication) degree course will consist of 80 credits. This will consist
