Interviewer: Good morning everybody and welcome to “The secrets of the CFO”.

I’m
your host Gil Richard Ong and today we are blessed with the presence of Wellmade’s
CFO, Mr. Wilfrance Sy Peng.

Interviewer: Sir Wilfrance, please tell us a little bit about yourself.

Mr. Sy Peng: I’m WIllfrance Sy Peng, currently the CFO of Wellmade Manufacturing
Corporation. Wellmade Manufacturing Corporation is the one manufacturing and selling
Speed Detergent Products. I’ve been with the company for a little over 3 years. Before, I
used to work for KPMG, part of the transactions, which is now called Deal Advisory,
more on MNA, IPO’s, valuation, and corporate finance. I graduated accountancy in San
Beda batch 2010.

Interviewer: Sir Willfrance, you said that you are a graduate of San Beda, first question
is “Is attaining a college degree enough to be qualified as a financial officer? Or further
studies and/or seminars should be necessary?”

Mr. Sy Peng: Enough yung degree but better if there are further studies kasi medyo
competitive ngayon ang corporate world so it is better if you have additional tools in
your toolbox.

(Having a degree is enough but you have to continue on learning since the corporate
world, nowadays, is very competitive)

Interviewer: Sir, would you advice the students that are watching you right now to
attend seminars that will provide specific training for their future?

Mr. Sy Peng: Yes. Definitely.

Interviewer: When attending seminars, we need to communicate with one another.

Mr. Sy Peng: Yes.

Interviewer: Which then leads us to our next question, “What kind of social
communication skills should a financial officer have?”

Mr. Sy Peng: If you’re a Chief Financial Officer, you’re in charge of accounting and
treasury. But it depends on the organizations, there are business development.
Technically, you should know how to motivate your people kasi marami kang
hinahawan na tao.

(You should know how to motivate because you handle a lot of people.)

Interviewer: Sir, in your office, how many people do you handle?

Mr. Sy Peng: Both accounting and treasure, around 25.


Interviewer: How do you keep your team motivated, productive, and aligned with the
company’s vision and mission?

Mr. Sy Peng: First, dapat yung people mo they know yung direction ng company, para
iembrance nila yung role nila to attain that goal, yun yung first step lagi doon eh. Explain
to them ano yung goals ng company, ano yung vision ng company, then explain it to
them ano yung role nila para makamit natin yung vision natin at yung goal na yun. So
with that, makikita mo naman na ieembrace nila yun so they give their best effort every
time.

(Explain to them the company’s goals, vision, and their specific roles in order to attain
those goals and vision set by the company. They would embrace their rolels and give
their best effort every time.)

Interviewer: What factors do you take into consideration when developing a company's
overall financial strategy?

Mr. Sy Peng: Ang financial strategy kasi must be aligned with the company strategy.
Everything from sales strategy and marketing strategy must be aligned to the direction
of the company. With that, magaalign lang naman ang financial strategy. Ano ba yung
kailangan ng operations mo to meet that goals.

Interviewer: Magaadapt yung financial strategy sa overall comapany’s strategy?

(Financial strategy should adapt to the overall company’s strategy?)

Mr. Sy Peng: Yes.

Interviewer: One final question, sir. Please look at the camera and tell the students who
are watching you right now the secrets on how to become a CFO.

Mr. Sy Peng: Actually, there is no secret. Just study hard para you are competitive
doon sa corporate world. Very tough kasi ngayon eh. Sa dami ng graduates every year,
you have to stand out. Then, if nakapasok ka na, sa corporate world, work hard. Never
stop learning kasi if you became complacent, magiging dinosaur ka, magiging extinct
ka. Keep on learning and keep on working hard.

(The corporate world is very tough, there are lots of graduates every year, you have to
stand out. Then, once you’ve entered the corporate world, work hard. Never stop
learning because if you become complacent, you’ll become Jurassic or extinct. Keep on
learning and keep in working hard.)
