For more details on virtualization, see:
• Experion PKS Software Installation User's Guide
• Experion PKS Virtualization Planning and Implementation Guide
• Target Node is a physical node with EBR installed (must be a Server or Desktop
Node) or a virtual node (without EBR installed).
• Backup destination is a computer (usually a file server or NAS device) that stores
all of the backup images for the Target Nodes.
• Management Console is a common GUI for local and central management tasks.
You must connect to the management server to be able to centrally manage the target
nodes using the management console.
• Managed node (Managed host) is a computer where the Agent for Windows,
Bootable Components and Media Builder, Universal Restore and Tray Monitor are
installed. The node is added to the management server and it is operated and
monitored from the management console. A server node, desktop node or ESX(i)
hosts can be added to the management server to make it a managed node or managed
host.
• Restore to same node is taking a backup from a node and restoring it on the same
node. Ex: restoring backup of a T5500 machine to the same machine.
• Restore to similar node is taking a backup from a node and restoring it to another
machine of the same physical configuration Ex: restoring backup of a T5500
machine to another T5500.
• Restore to dissimilar node is taking a backup from a machine and restoring it to
another machine of a different physical configuration. Ex: restoring backup of a
T5500 machine to HP Z620.
• Restoring virtual machines is taking backup of virtual nodes and restoring to a
virtual node on the same or a different host.
• Archive is a set of backups created and managed by a backup plan.
• Vault is a place for storing backup archives. A vault can be organized on a local or
networked drive or detachable media, such as an external USB drive.
• Deduplication is the process of minimizing storage space taken by the data by
detecting data repetition and storing the identical data only once.
Components
License Server
With the License Server, you can manage the Acronis licenses. When installing the EBR
Server or Desktop package, you must specify the license server. The installer fetches
licenses from the Acronis License Server.
Acronis Backup and Recovery agent which is installed on EBR Server or Desktop
connects to the Acronis License Server every time the agent service is started and then
every 1–5 days, as specified by the agent configuration parameters.
Each ESX(i) host or Virtual appliance takes one Host license from the License Server.
ATTENTION
If the agent is unable to connect to the license server or does not find the
appropriate license key within 1-60 days (as specified by the configuration
parameters), it stops working until there has been a successful license check.
By default, the agent tries to connect to the license server every day. The
agent can work without a license server or license for 30 days.
Management Server
The Management server is a central server that manages backup and recovery activities.
The administrators can connect from the management console and manage the entire
EBR infrastructure.
• All backup policies and backup and recovery jobs are managed, executed, and
tracked on the management server.
• The Management server maintains a list of registered storage nodes, vaults and
managed computers, and the respective configuration databases.
• The Management server maintains a centralized log repository that tracks the results
of all activities within the EBR infrastructure.
22 Backup and Restore User's Guide R431
Honeywell December 2014
1. Introduction to EBR
1.5. EBR R431 components
• The Management server generates reports using the information from the centralized
log repository and the configuration database.
Management console
The Acronis Backup and Recovery Management Console is a tool for managing agents
remotely or locally. When the console is connected to the management server, you can
perform central management tasks such as managing licenses, configuring and managing
backup policies.
Storage Node
The Storage Node is a dedicated computer for storing backup archives. The Storage
Node helps optimize the performance of the managed computers by enabling you to
manage the backup archives through managed vaults.
You can have up to 20 Storage Nodes. Each Storage Node can manage up to 20 vaults.
Storage Nodes are managed centrally by the Administrator using the Management
Server.
PXE server
Using the Acronis PXE Server, you can start a computer from your network into the
Acronis recovery environment for bare-metal restores. Bootable components are
uploaded to the Acronis PXE Server using the Bootable Media Builder.
REFERENCE - EXTERNAL
For more information about installing the PXE Server and configuring the
computer to boot from the PXE Server, see the section, Acronis PXE Server
in the Acronis® Backup & Recovery™ 11.5 User’s Guide.
ATTENTION
Use only the recovery media provided by Honeywell. Do not attempt to create
your own bootable media.
Agent Core
Acronis Backup and Recovery Agent Core enables Acronis agents to work on the
machine. Agent Core does not perform backup or recover; it contains the core
functionality required by the other agents.
Agent
The Acronis Backup and Recovery Agent is an application that enables volume level,
disk-level, and file-level backup and recovery. The management console manages the
Agent centrally or locally.
Tray Monitor
The Tray Monitor shows the execution of current tasks in the notification area.
Components for Remote Installation
The remote installation components register the Acronis components to make them
available for installation with the Remote Installation Wizard or Management Server web
page.

Storing Backups
CAUTION Do not use the local hard disk of the node being backed up to store
backup images. If the hard disk becomes full, it can impede the node’s
performance.
Do not use the shared storage of Honeywell Premium Platform for
Virtualization for storing backups.
Typically, a Target Node does not contain sufficient space to store all backups. Storing a
backup on a Target Node may degrade the performance of the node. In addition, if the
hard disk drive in the Target Node fails, all backups are lost.
For security purposes, the server that stores the backups must be located in the most
physically secure location.
The number of nodes in your system determines the number of servers required.
The primary guideline is that each full backup requires about half the amount of space as
the hard disk being backed up.
Offsite storage
The frequencies of the backups are determined by the importance of the data and
systems. Any mission-critical systems or data (those that must be recovered within
minutes or hours of the system failure) must be backed up and taken offsite at least daily.
The location you choose is important. The backups must not only be safe and secure, but
must be easily accessible in the event of a disaster.
It is recommended that you transfer backup images onto a DVD or tape (a CD may not
contain sufficient capacity) on a regularly-scheduled basis. You can store the media
offsite in a secure temperature-controlled environment for long-term storage. In addition,
you can define the backup retention rules for the media.
EBR also offers the ability to Export —copying backup images from one location to
another.
Backup/restore speed
Both the backup and restore procedures transfer data at a rate of 1Gigabit per minute to a
network drive (based on the uncompressed disk space in use). Backup to a USB hard disk
mounted locally has similar performance. However, the recovery time is nearly twice as
fast.
Network speed depends on:
Network destination: Device type (NAS), network bandwidth (1GB or bonded with 2GB)
and the source or traffic that is traversing a router. For example: If the source is a 100Mb
physical machine, it would be slower than a 1GB virtual machine backup from a host.
TIP
It is recommended that you use the Normal option for data compression, as it
provides the best overall performance results.
6.2 Deduplication
Deduplication is the process of minimizing storage space taken by the backed up data by
detecting backup data repetition and storing identical backup data only once. Acronis
deduplicates backups saved to a managed vault if you enable deduplication during the
vault creation. A vault where deduplication is enabled is called a deduplicating vault.
Note: The storage node component has to be installed for using deduplication.
Deduplication is possible only when the backup is stored to a managed vault.
Deduplication is performed in the following two ways:
Deduplication at source
It is performed on a managed machine during backup. The agent uses the storage node to
determine the data that can be deduplicated. It does not transfer the data blocks in which
the duplicates are already present in the vault. Deduplication performed at source
consumes resources of source machine causing more load. For virtual machines
deduplication can not be done at source.
Deduplication at target
It is performed in the vault after a backup is completed. The storage node analyses the
vault's contents and deduplicates data in the vault.
For more information about Deduplication, see section 7.5.7 of the Acronis® Backup &
Recovery ™ 11.5 User’s Guide.
Honeywell recommends using Deduplication at target only. Deduplication is a memory
intensive operation of the storage node. Hence when deduplication is used, the storage
node will need additional RAM. EBR Manager and storage node setup on a VM will
need 16 GB or more RAM (up to 32 GB).
We recommend loading the storage node on the EBR manager on a VM but the actual
vault needs to be on an NAS device managed by the storage node.

2 Specify the parameters as required.
3 Click OK.
Clean up archive
You can configure the clean up archive option by selecting any one of the following:
• Using retention rules
• When there is insufficient space while backing up
TIP
The Storage Node component must be installed on the node before adding it
as a storage node on the management server. See Installing EBR Manager
for more details.
Step Action
6.10 Vaults
A vault is a location for storing backup archives. It is organized on a local or a networked
drive, detachable media, or a tape device attached to a Storage Node.
There are no settings for limiting a vault size or number of backups in a vault. You can
limit the size of each archive using the archive cleanup function, but the total size of
archives stored in the vault is limited by the storage size only.
Centralized vaults
A centralized vault is a networked location allotted by the management server
administrator to serve as storage for the backup archives. It can be Managed or
Unmanaged.
When the management server administrator creates a vault, its path and name are
distributed to all computers registered on the server. Any backup plans existing on the
computers can use the centralized vault.
If a computer is not registered on the management server, specify the full path to the
vault while backing up to a centralized vault. If the vault is Managed, all backup archives
are managed by the storage node.
Managed vaults
A Managed vault is a centralized vault managed by a storage node. The storage node
performs the cleanup and the validation for each archive stored in a Managed vault.
Any Managed vault is self-contained. It contains all the metadata the storage node needs
to manage the vault. In case the storage node is lost or its database is corrupted, the new
storage node retrieves the metadata and re-creates the database.
Deduplication at the target will increase memory load on the storage node and
consequently to the Manage Vault.
Managed vaults can reside on:
• Network share
• SAN
• NAS
• The local hard drive of the storage node
ATTENTION
NFS datastore is NOT supported.
TIP
To create backups on a managed vault, you must have an account on the
computer where the storage node is installed.
Unmanaged vaults
An Unmanaged vault is a centralized vault that is not managed by a storage node. To
access an Unmanaged vault, you must have access privileges for the location from the
network.
When backups are performed, the source communicates directly with the backup
destination, i.e., connects to a NAS device.
With read/write permissions to an Unmanaged vault location, you can backup and restore
data and you can view and manage archives.
Creating a Centralized vault (Managed)
ATTENTION
Before creating a Managed vault, you must install and set up a storage node.

TIP
It is recommended to document the system recovery plan and make it
available to all the participants.
The recovery plan can protect the organization in a number of ways, including:
• Providing a sense of security.
• Ensuring system and resource stability during an unexpected event.
• Minimizing system downtime and recovery.
• Minimizing the risk of permanent loss of critical systems and data.
• Minimizing confusion during an event.
• Minimizing the amount of decision making after the event.
• Providing a platform on which to test various disaster recovery scenarios.
• Ensuring the reliability of secondary systems such as mirror servers and
uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems.
When developing a recovery plan, you must remember that its instructions may be
carried out in extremely stressful conditions. Therefore, it is essential that the plan
contains easy-to-follow instructions written in a chronological order.
You must perform the following tasks when you begin developing the recovery plan:
• Analyze the business impact
• Perform a risk assessment
• Develop the recovery plan
• Test and audit the plan
read/write mode, scans and cleans it with an antivirus program, and finally recovers
the machine.
• If recovery failed due to a disk error, mount the image in the read/write mode. Then,
check the mounted disk for errors with the chkdsk /r command.

ATTENTION
Automatic check pointing from the primary Experion Server to the backup
Experion Server does not occur until the two servers are properly
synchronized.
Step Action
1 On the primary Experion Server, connect to a Station.
2 Click View > System Status > Server Redundancy to start the Server
Redundancy Status display on the primary Experion Server.
In the Link Status group, the LEDs must be green and indicate the following:
• Backup server is running.
• Link is OK.
ATTENTION
Before performing Failover check Controller Subsystem Status on the Server
Redundancy status page. The status should be as follows:
1 Engineering Repository DB : Auto sync enabled
2 Engineering Repository DB to System Repository: ERDB SR
Synchronized
3 System Repository primary: Running
4 System Repository backup: Synchronized and Running
If any of the status does not match the above criteria, contact TAC.
4 If you want the other Experion Server to be the primary database, click
Manual Failover, and then click Yes to start the failover.
5 After a few minutes, click Synchronize, and then Yes to resynchronize the
databases. (If you start synchronization immediately after the failover, an
error may occur.)
CAUTION Ensure your process is “Off Control” as these procedures require that
the controller be idled and/or a new database loaded.
After restoring the Experion database, the database and the controllers may be out-of-
sync if the control strategy or controller parameters have changed since the backup was
created.
If the control strategy or the controller parameters remain the same since the backup, you
can update the current parameters by uploading the controller to the ERDB, and then
updating the project from loaded. In addition, you must save the checkpoint files again
from the controller.
If the control strategy has changed since the backup, or if Qualification and Version
Control System (QVCS) is licensed and the QVCS database changed (such as check in
and checkout), you must re-enter the changes to the ERDB project database after it is
restored.
Then, you must update the controller by loading the missing blocks as follows:
Step Action
1 Add the new blocks to the project side of the ERDB but do not load them yet.
2 For each controller that changed since the backup, load the controller
checkpoint that was restored with the database to delete the controller copies
of the new blocks. This is necessary because the new blocks are “ghost”
points and cannot be deleted directly.
3 Note that if the added blocks were IOMs, the checkpoint load may fail. In this
case, you must bring the controller to the NODB state by using NTOOLS or
pulling the batteries and cycling the controller power, and then loading the
checkpoint.
4 Load the newly added blocks.
5 If there were external connections to the added blocks, any blocks
referencing them in other Control Modules or controllers (if peer-to-peer)
must be reloaded to update the references to these blocks.
6 When completed, save the controller checkpoint and back up the updated
database.
Step Action
7 After restoring Experion Server B of a redundant pair, note the checkpoint
files. If the older checkpoint files are restored to Experion Server B,
synchronization attempts to update them from Experion Server A, causing
them to become out-of-sync with the database. The solution is to delete the
checkpoint files from Experion Server A after replicating the database and
before enabling the ERDB synchronization.
Prerequisites
Ensure that you login with local account which has local administrator and product
administrator privileges.
ATTENTION
Event restoration can only be run at level “Database Only”.
This cannot be run on Running system.
