1) UN RESOLUTION 242 (November 1967)

- Resolution adopted unanimously by UN Security Council after Six Day War.


Resolution focused on creating lasting peace in Middle East, particularly Israel-
Palestine conflict
- Agreement states that Israel must withdraw their armed forces from all terriorties
and respect and acknowledge the sovereignty and political indepednece of these
states and allow them to live in peace without fear of threat. This was sponsored by
the British Ambassador

2) UN RESOLUTION 181 (November 1947)


- Proposal by the United Nations recommending a partition of Mandatory Palestine at
the end of the British Mandate. The proposal recommended separate Jewish and
Arab states. Jewish people accepted the plan but Arab leaders refused because they
believed it violated their principles of self-determination, in accordance with the UN
Charter that grants people the right to choose their own destiny

3) UNEF 1 AND UNEF 2


- First United Nations Emergency Force was established by the UNGA to end the 1956
Suez crisis. This was proposed by Canada’s External Affairs minister Lester B.
Pearson. The Second UNEF was deployed from October 1973-1979

4) Beirut Declaration
- Arab league meeting in Beirut, Lebanon in 2002 to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict. In the meeting Arab leaders called for peace between all Arab States and
Israel, in exchange, Israel would leave occupied land and allow Palestinian refugees
to return home. Israel refused this call saying it was trying to place UN Resolution
242.

5) Black September
- Black September was a war that started in September 1970, a conflict between the
PLO under Yasser Arafat and Jordanian Armed Forces under King Hussein. PLO
wanted to topple the Hashemite Monarchy and rule Jordan. Conflict resulted in
thousands of Palestinians losing their lives and the PLO being expelled to Lebanon.

6) MAC – Mixed Armistice Commission


- Is an organization that monitors the ceasefires along the lines set by the General
Armisitice Agreement. It was made up of UN military observers and part of the UN
Truce Supervision organization on peacekeeping. The Headquarters are in Jerusalem
and they supervise ceasefire agreements in the region.

7) Peel Commission
- Was a Royal British inquiry commission headed by British Politcian Lord Peel in 1936.
The commission was the first to recommend partition in Palestine, after conducting
a study into why unrest was happening. The Arabs opposed it and condemned it
unanimously and accused Brits of betrayal.

8) United Arab Republic


- UAR was a political union between Syria and Egypt between 1958-1961. It was
headed by Egytipian Pro-Pan Arab President Gamel Abdel Nasser. Syria withdrew in
1961, following a military coup.

9) Ze’ev Jabotinsky
- Was a Zionist leader, author, poet, solider and the founder of the Jewish self-
defence organization. He also co-founded the Jewish Legion and established Zionist
paramilitary organizations such as Irgun.

10) UNRWA
Is the UN Relief and works agency for Palestinian refugees. Was created in December
1949 following the displacement and expulsion of Palestinian refugees in the 1948
Palestinian war. Originally intended to provide jobs, today it provides education, health
care and social services to 5 million refugees.

11) Allon Plan


- Was a plan drafted by Israeli Minister Yigal Allan in 1967. The plan was to partition
West Bank between Israel and Jordan and to establish a Druze state in Golan Heights
of Syria. King Hussein rejected the plan. In 1980, following allon’s death, the Israel
passed the plan and annexed Golan heights.

12) Peace Now is an Israeli- liberal NGO that promotes a two-state solution to the Israeli-
Palestinian conflict

13) Phalangist Party – is a right wing secular political party in Lebanon that mainly consists
of Maronite Christians. The party played an influential role in the Lebanese Civil War
from 1975-1990.

14) Oil For Food Programme – was a programme established by the UN IN 1995, ALLOWING
IRAQ TO SELL OIL IN THE WORLD MARKET IN EXCHANGE FOR FOOD. MEDICINE AND
HUMANITARIAN NEEDS. THISE PROGRAMME WAS PROPOSED BY PRESIDENT BILL
CLINTON IN 1995, AFTER REALIZING THAT SANCTIONS IMPOSED ON IRAQ TO
DEMILITIRIZE THEIR ARMY MIGHT AFFECT IRAQI CITIIZENS.

15) MORONITE – MORONITES ARE KNOWN AS A ETHNO-RELIGIOUS GROUP IN LEBANON,


THEY ARE CHRISTIAN LEBANESE. THE GROUP WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN THEIR STATUS
THORUGH THE ARAB ISLAMIC RULES AND HOLD ON TO RELIGIOUS AND CULTURAL
TRADITIONS.
