Avon baseball wins state baseball title

The Avon Braves had
been there before – the
New York State Class C
baseball finals.
And after losing
the previous two title
games, they again found
themselves looking at the
short end of a 5-3 score
late in the finals against
Ticondergoa, the Section
VII champ.
But the Braves didn’t
give up, rallying for a 6-5
win in eight innings and the
school’s first state baseball
title.
“It’s just an unbelievable
feeling,” senior Maxx
Countryman said. “We
were down most of the
game, but the guys in the
dugout never stopped
believing. We just needed
a few breaks to go our way
and they did.”

the seventh inning,
Countryman drew a
leadoff walk and eventually
scored on back-to-back
wild pitches to force extra
innings. Avon then took its
first lead of the game in the
eighth inning when Jimmy
Gross scored on another
wild pitch. Senior pitcher Maxx Countryman continued to come through in
big moments with a pair of dominating performances during the
Braves’ run to the state baseball title. He pitched three straight
shutouts in the Section V Class C1 final, the state regional game
and state semifinal game. He also started Avon’s comeback in
the state championship game with an RBI double that scored his Avon senior Aaron Ghent records an out at first base.

These three monster sculptures are the creations of, from left, Ally Schutt, Garrit Coddington and
Morgan Tripi, all seniors at Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School. The pieces, made for a Ceramics II
art class, were among the thousands of art works featured in the annual “Cougar Creations” art
show. Works from students in kindergarten through 12th grade are exhibited. The long-standing
celebration of the arts also features the school’s music groups. This was the event’s 34th year.
