“This is disappointing,” President

G.P. “Bud” Peterson said, sitting in his
office for an interview on Tech’s vari-
ous ethical abuses and his leadership
team’s response. “It’s disappointing to
me as President. It’s disappointing to
our alumni and I know it’s disappoint-
ing to students.”
Last Wednesday, on Aug. 13, Peter-
son struck similar tones in an update
letter to University System of Georgia
Chancellor Steve Wrigley, writing “the
past month, I have felt disappoint-
ment, anger and embarrassment over
the ethical lapses that have plagued us
at Georgia Tech.”
The memorandum attached to the
letter detailed, one by one, Tech’s re-
sponse to each demand made by Wrig-
ley in a July 20 directive sent to Peter-
son in the wake of the three damaging
ethics audits completed in the summer.
“As we agreed, lax management and
unethical behavior at Georgia Tech
have resulted in misuse of resources
and a failure to hold staff accountable,
and, as president, you are ultimately
responsible,” Wrigley wrote back to
Peterson on Aug. 20. “Bud, now the
work begins, the hourly, daily, weekly
decisions, small and large, on your part
and others at Tech, to create a culture
committed to ethical excellence. I ex-
pect this change to occur, and it must
be real and sustained.”
In other words, the pressure is on
from Chancellor Wrigley and the ex-
pectant Tech community for President

Georgia Tech
Lorraine:
A Day in the Life
MEGAN KAISER
CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Thursday June 21, 2018

That day started out the same as every other day — with my
alarm blaring at 8 o’clock in the morning, waking me up for my
daily exercise regime. But who was I to complain? Each morn-
ing, I got to run three miles around a beautiful lake complete
with a swan and ducks near the Georgia Tech Lorraine campus
in Metz, France. I studied there for the summer, and this is a
little insight into what my life was like for those ten weeks.
After completing my workout, I went back to Crous, my
apartment building near campus, took a quick shower and ate
breakfast. Class started at 10:30 a.m. on the third floor of the
GTL building, but it was such a relief to walk there since it is
the only air conditioned building for miles, and we were in the
middle of a heat wave in France.
As a chemical engineer, I took two courses during the first
five weeks of the summer and another two during the second
portion. My fellow chemical engineers and I had just finished
our Thermodynamics II final yesterday and today was our first
day of Transport Processes I, the class we would be taking for
the remainder of the program. We were immediately thrown
into learning about fluid dynamics.
The transition was pretty rough as our new professor’s teach-
ing style was completely different and our homework almost
doubled. Even in France, Tech is still Tech.
After a long week, we were itching to get out for lunch at
12:30 p.m. The Crous cafeteria has tons of options for students,
if you can figure out what the options are (they’re in French).
Every day, they offer a French lunch with bread, cheese, an ap-
petizer, a dessert and a main course. After lunch, we made our
trek back to the GTL building to work on our transport home-
work.
After a four hour effort getting work done for the weekend
and my second class, an LMC course I was taking for my hu-
manities requirement, I was done and went back to my apart-

The album contains ten tracks
and comes in at a runtime of 38

strength is its consistent quality.
Alternative bands often strug-

is that bands often release albums

Tech Pros: Daniel Palka

When former Tech baseball player Daniel Palka was called up
to the MLB, that he started hitting and still hasn’t stopped should
come as little surprise — he’s done nothing but hit at every level of
play for his career. Even then, the former Jacket was a pleasant
surprise for the Chicago White Sox after bouncing from minor
league team to minor league team for most of his career, and
figures to be a part of their future for years to come.
Palka was an outstanding outfielder for Tech from 2011-2013,
slashing .314/.397/.581 for his career. In his last season in white
and gold, Palka posted an impressive .342/.436/.637 line, crush-
ing 17 HR and knocking in 66 runs, leading the team in most
offensive categories. Palka also spent a brief time on the mound,
hurling 17 innings his Tech career with a microscopic 0.52 ERA,
striking out 8.83 batters per nine innings.
On the back of a strong showing in the ACC, Palka, who had
previously been drafted in the 19th round of the 2010 MLB Ama-
teur Draft, found his stock rising and was selected by the Arizona
Diamondbacks with the 88th overall pick of the 2013 MLB draft.
Palka signed with the D-backs and continued to display an exem-
plary power bat, slugging .516 in his first professional season. He
was later traded in 2015 to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for
catcher Chris Hermann and kept on raking while working his way
up through the Twins’ minor league system.
Palka was added to the Twins’ 40-man roster in 2016, usually
an indication that a player will eventually join the major league
team, but opportunity never came knocking with the Twins, and
he was placed on waivers after the 2017 season, where he Photo by Kirsten Reynolds Student Publications
slashed a disappointing .274/.329/.431, a major power-outage
compared to his previous seasons. The White Sox picked up Pal-
ka off of waivers and he joined the major league team, making
his debut on April 25, 2018, going 0/4 with an RBI groundout.
Playing as designated hitter for the Sox, Palka has found his
power stroke once again – Palka ranks 27th in the MLB in isolat-
ed slugging among players with at least 300 plate appearances
with a .235 figure, a promising rebound indeed.
