Narrative Report

July 16-20, 2018

On July 16, 2018, scholars from different medical schools arrived at Subic Bay Peninsular Hotel,
to attend a Pre-Summer Immersion Program (Pre-SIP). The symposium began shortly with an overview
of the Pre-Service Scholarship Program, Pre-SIP program and SIP Rules. Once the initial orientation
was done, the event proceeded to give lectures on the Philippine Health Situation which was given by
Ms. Sherill Aure and was then followed by a lecture on DOH FOURmula 1+ by Dr. Lailani
Mangulabnan. At the evening we, the scholars, were then escorted to our rooms, half were housed in
the Subic Bay Peninsular Hotel and half were in Buena Casa Hotel.
On July 17, 2018, the lectures continued with discussions on Health System Structure and
Service Delivery Network given by Dr. Jesus Cesario Avorque. There were frequent exchanges of
ideas with participating groups which gave the lecture a more casual approach. Dr. Angeli
Wagacontinued the momentum by discussing on introductions to Community Diagnosis. This then
cumulated to an activity where groups were assigned to construct either a SWOT analysis, Problem
Tree/ Objective Tree Analysis, Fishbone Analysis or Stakeholder Mapping. After the outputs were
evaluated, the day continued with lectures on UN Sustainable Development Goals and WHO Six
Building Blocks of Health given by Dr. Kezia Lorraine Rosario and Dr. Jesus Cesario Avorque,
respectively. The day ended with a short discussion on being a five star Physician and on Social
Determinants of Health. Some video documentaries were shown about struggles, sacrifices and
triumphs encountered by DTTBs.
On July 18, 2018, Dr. Jana Deborrah Mier-Alpano gave lectures on Infectious Disease
Prevention and Control Program and on the Family Health Program, followed by Dr. Dalvie Casilang’s
lecture on Non-communicable Disease Program. An open forum ensued were some valid points were
thrown and subsequently answered by. The afternoon session then moved to basic patient history
taking and physical examination given by Dr. Dalvie Casilang and Basic Surgical Techniques taught by
Dr. Jana Deborrah Mier-Alpano. The day ended with an energetic lecture from Dr. Julius Arkhe
Atacador which circled on Introductions to BEmONC and EINC. Some points were raised by
participants but were soon explained thoroughly.

July 19, 2018, focused solely on the BLS training. A baseline exam was given to gauze the
participants’ general knowledge. Lectures were given in the morning about its mechanics, importance
and techniques. The trainers then proceeded to administer a qualifying exam to ensure retention of
important facts needed for an effective BLS provider. The afternoon then moved to demonstrations of
skills, were trainers would present scenarios and grade the participants’ execution and knowledge on
Basic life support. Results were posted at the end of the training. After which we were asked to freshen
up and return for a social’s night. They administered games designed to promote teamwork and critical
thinking. Prizes were given to subsequent winners.
July 20, 2018, Concerns, reminders and announcements were aired about the Medical
scholarship contracts. Dr. Karl Ivan Daryl Igrobay gave a talk on IMCI which he then followed by
sharing experiences he encountered as a DTTB. Other Doctors shared their experiences, Dr. Joshua
Elmer Dungca, Dr. Juan Alfonso Perez and Dr. Katrina Asuncion-Dungca gave inspiring messages on
their perspective on being a DTTB. They provided unparalleled scope on the struggles, nuances and
fulfillment on public service. The day ended with brief announcements on the deployment program and
community immersion program. Concerns and issues were addressed accordingly. Closing remarks
then ensued.
