on the move

Currently Victoria Police have 332 stations
across the state. Just under one third of these
are one-person stations.
When Senior Constable Dave Young
took over the one-person police station in
Gordon in 2011, his beat covered all the
way to Meredith through to Clarkes Hill,
Springbank, Yendon, Lal Lal and Bungaree.
Good job Victoria Police has no current
plans to close any of their one-person
stations as Snr Const Young, who knows
he has found his niche in the police force,
is leaving Gordon in September to take up
another solo position in Malmsbury.
“I can see why the last policeman [Alex
McCann] was here for 15 years,” he says
about his past seven years in Gordon.
“I’m loving this. The challenges it gives me,
the friends I make, the country communities,
you can’t beat that.”
Gordon Netball Football Club reserves and
seniors team manager Bob West, a long time
stalwart of the club, remembers when Mr
Young joined the club when he first settled
in Gordon.
“He was very community minded, joining
as a player then coaching the under 12s and
the under 15s,” Mr West said.
Young taught the kids the basics of football,
making the finals but never taking out the
flag.
“The kids loved him,” says Mr West.
“I think he has been very good for the town,
the football club and the community and it’s
great to be able to trust him and go to him if
you need to,” says Mr West.
Business owner in Gordon Bob Petch said he
thinks it’s a fair bet that having a one-person
police station is a deterrent.
“You know that a good country policeman
knows when to intervene and when not to.

be sad to see him leave Gordon.”

aged 19, discovered his preference for one-
person stations when he did temporary
duties at one while working in Gippsland
many years ago.
“I enjoy the mix of policing and community.
Without their trust you lose your effectiveness
as a policeman because the idea is to get the
community to help you do the job.”
Mr Young remarked on the changes in
Gordon.
“There have probably been 50 new houses
built in the last seven years. There were 30
kids at the primary school when I arrived.
Now there are 120.
“Gordon is changing from a small country
town and is slowly becoming a commuter
town.”
While Mr Young and wife Lisa are sad
to be leaving Gordon, he’s been told that
Malmsbury’s “bakery is quite nice, the pub
does a good feed and there is good coffee at a
place round near the gardens.”
Moorabool Local Area Commander,
Inspector Brendon McCrory gave a glowing
reference.
“Dave is regarded as one of the finest
examples of single member policing
across the state and highly valued by his
community and colleagues.”
The Gordon police station will be manned
temporarily by a local police officer until a
permanent appointment is made.

The ribbon has been cut to officially
open the completion of Stage 1 of the
Ballan Streetscape.

A new way for traffic
An upgrade improving access to
the Western Freeway via Bacchus
Marsh is now complete; with new
entry and exit ramps, as well as
a shared pedestrian and cycling
bridge accessible at Halletts Way.
The new ramp was officially
opened last Thursday, 30 August
by Victorian Labor Roads Minis-
ter Luke Donnellan and Liberal
Senator Jane Hume.
Local representatives, including
Moorabool Shire Council Mayor
Paul Tatchell, Crs Edwards, Ke-
ogh, Dudzik and Bingham, MSC
CEO Rob Croxford, MSC Manag-
ers and staff along with Member
for Western Victoria Joshua Mor-
ris, were also present.
The $15.2 million upgrade,
which opened ahead of its origi-
nal November date, is set to en-
hance traffic flow and speed up
travel times, allowing drivers to
bypass the town centre of Bac-
chus Marsh.
Minister Donnellan thanked
the Moorabool Shire Council’s
“quiet and subtle lobbying” for
the upgrade.
“Bacchus Marsh is growing very
quickly; you need to be able to get
around the centre of the city in
a matter which is sane, and this
provides the opportunity”, said
Minister Donnellan.
Mayor Paul Tatchell says the up-
grade will make a “dramatic im-
provement” to remove pressure
from the main exits and entries
into Bacchus Marsh.
Cr Tatchell says the next target
to eliminate traffic congestion is
“definitely the Woolpack Rd or
alternate bypass” but says an up-
grade of the notoriously difficult
Woolpack Rd “is probably up to
the government”.
“At this point in time, there’s
some rules in there that says that
we can’t…that means we have
to find an alternative solution or
come back with a plan that makes
Woolpack more palatable”, said
Cr Tatchell.

In the Minister’s response forwarded to
Mr Ellis the Minister makes it clear that
responsibility regarding this matter falls
with Moorabool Shire Council.
In the Minister’s correspondence of the 23
Aug. 2018 to Mr Ellis she states Moorabool
Council, who are responsible for the road
project concerned, had indicated that ‘…
electrical commissioning works…’ were
still underway and expected an ‘audit’ be
completed in about eight weeks. However,
if unsuccessful the audit completion could
take up to 3-4 months.

I am a regular traveller along Halletts Way,
and I have been watching the progress of the
construction of the new on/off ramps for the
freeway, as well as the installation of traffic
lights. This should make the traffic flow a lot
easier, especially at school drop off and pick
up times.
However, I am concerned about the position
of the bus-stop right near the on-ramp to the
freeway. There is no room for the bus to pull
in, so consequently, when the bus stops for
passengers, all traffic heading north, has to
stop.
This problem could easily be resolved by
relocating the bus stop, to the northern side
of the roundabout, where there is provision
for the bus to move off the carriage way... IE..
not impeding the traffic flow.

A not so ‘trusted tradie’ attended the home
of a young Bacchus Marsh woman and didn’t
leave empty handed.
Mikail Sahin was alleged to have attended
the victim’s house after she reached out for a
plumber’s assistance via the Facebook page
‘Trusted Tradies’.
The 22-year-old first year plumber attended
the victim’s residence on May 26, completed
the job and took her wallet on his way out.
Prosecutor Senior Constable Lisa
Schoemaker told the Bacchus Marsh court
on Friday 17 August, the victim noticed her
wallet was missing when she was leaving for
an appointment.
“The victim began to notice that transactions
were coming out of her account, being
$78.90 at Coles Express and $89 at Bunnings
Melton,” Ms Schoemaker said.
Sahin was interviewed at Bacchus Marsh
police station on May 30 where he said
that when he “realised it was her card [he]
snapped it and threw it in the bin.”
The accused’s lawyer told the court when
Sahin attended the victim’s home, he put his
keys and wallet next to hers and must have
picked the victim’s card up by mistake.
“He uses his company card often and
mistook [the victim’s] card for the company
card,” the accused’s lawyer said.
“The card is used to purchase work related
things and then he is reimbursed by his boss.
“He has no reason to steal, he has no priors
and no criminal record. He has attended
today and is remorseful of his actions,” the
accused’s lawyer said.
Magistrate Dan Muling didn’t agree.
“I don’t think he’s remorseful at all, I think
he’s remorseful because he got caught.
“When you dig a hole, it’s very hard to get
out of it,” Magistrate Muling said.
“My intention was to go and help her, it was
a mistake your honour,” accused Sahin said.
“This doesn’t sit well with me,” Magistrate
Muling responded.
“This puts your whole career up in smoke.”
Sahin was fined $750 without conviction
and was ordered to pay all of the money
stolen from the victim back in compensation.

Reigning premiers Darley
continued their strangle-
hold over town rivals Bac-
chus Marsh with a runaway
52-point win in last Sunday’s
Elimination Final at Darley
Park.
It was their fifth win in a
row against the old enemy
and their third this year. The
win sets up another do or
die meeting, this time with
an inform North Ballarat in
Sunday’s First Semi Final at
City Oval.
The Cobras threw caution
into the wind early with
an unfamiliar focus of the

Devils. One could be right to
