Why Journalism Is Important
Introduced by Mark Bauer, Shorthorn editor in chief

2-3 p.m.
The Future of Journalism: Two Possible Paths
Choose from two panel discussions:

Your Future in Print Media

Print journalism may not be dying but itʼs certainly changing shape. Three people who are strongly
entrenched in print journalism and who are shaping its future will tell how theyʼre doing this — and look
into their crystals ball to discuss the future for students who want to work in print.
Walt Stallings, senior deputy managing editor, The Dallas Morning News
Gayle Reaves, editor, FW Weekly
Chris Wessling, senior editor, American Way magazine
Moderator: Geoff Campbell, journalism instructor, UT Arlington
Concho Room

Your Future in New Media

If you pursue a career in media, the jobs you will work in may not even currently exist. But successful
models for online-only journalism are now in taking shape. Three journalists who are now online-only will
discuss where they work now, how they got there— and look into their crystal balls to discuss the future
for students who want to work in what we currently call “new media.”
Brandi Grissom, reporter, Texas Tribune
Jason Sickles, Dallas local editor, YAHOO! News
Mike Orren, founder and president, Pegasus News
Moderator: Dr. Camille Broadway, assistant professor of journalism, UT Arlington
