Free Workshop
With the massive amount of media being easily shared
digitally, how do we know what’s fair to use or what others
can use of ours? Recent court cases with Canadian artists
emphasize the importance of understanding copyright.
Presenting and accessing creative works – art, photogra-
phy, video, writing, music – is easier than ever and this
has major implications on how we choose to showcase
our creative output.
From understanding copyright and its applications for
creators to fair dealing and fair use, lawyer and copyright
expert Martha Rans will unravel the shifting and evolving
legal issues that need to be a major part of your business
as an artist. This workshop is recommended for all cre-
ators: visual artists, media artists, composers, writers, per-
forming artists and photographers and is approximately
1.5 hours in length, plus Q & A.
The workshop will be held on Thursday, September 13
from 7 – 8:30 pm at Selkirk College Kootenay Studio Arts
(KSA) Campus, 606 Victoria Street, Nelson. This work-
shop is free of charge, but preregistration is required

Larger than life puppets to march in parade.
Nelson Climate Parade!
On Saturday, September 8, people will be marching
around the world, from San Francisco to Capetown to
‘Rise Together for Climate’ on a Global Day of Action.
In Nelson, people will be joining in a parade from the Rail-
town parking lot by Cottonwood Market. The parade will be
lead by the larger than life puppets, new Kootenay arrivals.
“We’ll be calling on Canadian leaders to save the trees,
stop the smoke and reduce fossil fuels to cut down on the
extremes of climate change,” says Sandra Hartline of the
Nelson Chapter of the Council of Canadians, one of the
sponsors. “There can be no doubt that climate change is
already causing catastrophe and if we don’t do more it will
get much worse,” she said.
Speakers at Cottonwood Market will talk about what we
can do locally to reduce carbon pollution and fight cli-
mate disaster. “It will be exciting to have people see these
giant puppets.” says Jan Inglis who ran a workshop on
mask and puppet making for activists this summer. “They
add a wow factor to rallies – something the whole fam-
ily can relate to.” Bring your camera for selfies with the
puppets, bring your sign about smoke and climate change.

Diemm - Music to illuminate
In a tiny tree house near Kaslo an album was created,
imbued with mysticism, surrender and trust. And harp! Lots
of harp. Actualized by the pixie-like harpist/singer-song-
writer Diemm, her debut album Ten Thousand Miracles con-
sists of fourteen tracks that draw inspiration from her home.
“The Kootenay mountains are inspiring. They’re vast
and wild. Serene and stormy. Remote and pristine,” says
Diemm. “The Muse that works through me has a heart-
beat that feels like the pulse of the earth herself, synco-
pating with my own heartbeat. When I need to resource
myself and be inspired, I immerse in the patterns of the
woods, the lake; the wise places of the natural landscape.”
Produced by Diemm and Adham Shaikh (Outworld
Orkestra) and featuring acoustic bass from critically
acclaimed folk-roots musician Oliver Swain (Oliver
Swain’s Big Machine/Twin Bandit/Tower of Song) the
album is an ethereal Chamber Folk voyage full of twists
and turns. Crystalline vocals. Lyrics like arrows. Layers of
harp, acoustic bass and tasty percussion.
This September finds Diemm hitting the road to cel-
ebrate the launch of the record, with Oliver Swain and
his beautiful bass and world percussionist Ben Johnson.
They’re visiting a dozen communities around BC. “I’ve
chosen sweet churches and halls with great acoustics, to
present this music,” she says, “I’m curious to see where
else the songs will take me.”
The rafters will ring at Centre 64 in Kimberly on Sep-
tember 13; The Langham in Kaslo, Friday, September 14;
Nelson Covenant Church Saturday, September 15 and
Harrison Memorial Church in Crawford Bay, September

1954-2018
It is with heavy hearts that we
announce the passing of Kenton
Percival Simpson on Friday,
August 24, 2018 at Kootenay
Boundary Regional Hospital after
a brief illness. Ken will be deeply
missed by his loving partner,
Linda Cochrane, his daughter
Laurie (Dave Perepolkin), his son
James Simpson (Kay Mitchell),
his sister Deane Reichert and his
grandchildren Xander, Dawson,
Neaveh, Aleah, Dylan and Thea.
He was a loving Dad, Grandpa
and partner.
Ken was predeceased by his
beloved wife Mary Simpson (nee
Martens) in 1999, his parents,
Percival and Ilene Simpson, and
his brother Wayne.
Born in Carmen, Manitoba in
1954, Ken moved with his parents
to Banff, Alberta where he spent
his formative years and lived an
avid outdoor lifestyle enjoying
downhill skiing with his many
friends. He loved everything
outdoors, including fishing,
camping and scuba diving. Ken

to the Langham Theatre!
Café Langham presents ‘A Ripple In Space/Time’ on
Saturday, September 8 at 7 pm. This mind-bending mul-
timedia presentation by amateur astronomer Sandy Nich-
ols explores the nature and significance of gravity waves,
what causes them and why they are important to the
future of astronomy.
This presentation will focus on the events of August
18, 2017. On that date a gravity wave was detected
by two of Earth’s LIGO (Laser Interferometer Grav-
ity Observatory) installations, triggering a worldwide
detective effort to locate its origin. The talk will provide
background information needed to better understand
this finding that confirms theories first proposed by
Albert Einstein in 1916.

Selkirk College is recognizing the importance employ-
ers place on soft skills with Co-Curricular Record (CCR),
a new program that supports invaluable post-secondary
learning taking place outside the classroom.
When students return to campus this fall, they will be
able to earn official co-curricular credit for participating
in organized activities that help hone employable skills.
“When employers are hiring into their organization, they
are drawn to that well rounded candidate who has more
than the qualified skills and industry knowledge to do
the job,” says Selkirk College Vice President of Students
& Advancement John Kincaid. “Employers want commu-
nication and leadership skills, a team player and problem
solver, someone with emotional intelligence.”
Employers feel more confident when assessing the value
of an out of classroom experience such as being club pres-
ident, offering campus tours to prospective students or
community volunteering if they know the co-curricular
activity is recognized and supported by the institution.

To address this need, CCR is growing in use at post-
secondaries. Early adopters around the turn of the cen-
tury were Brock University, Laurier University, Durham
College and the University of Calgary. Today, close to 50
schools across Canada either have a co-curricular pro-
gram or are in the process of launching one.
CCR programming provides students with diverse
opportunities to engage in non-academic activities identi-
fied as fostering personal growth and development, devel-
oping employable skills and enhancing transferable abilities
beyond what is recognized on the student’s academic tran-
script. They also encourage a well rounded post-secondary
experience where students get out of it what they put in.
Mahala Morris was a Student Ambassador at Selkirk Col-
lege during the 2016-18 school years. She was eager to be
active on campus to bolster her application to med-school
but also to enrich her education. “I was able to connect with
so many more students than I would have met if I had my
nose in the books all the time,” she says. “I was also able to
practice my people skills as I helped students problem solve.
I enjoyed being a leader on campus and I value those skills as
well.” Morris welcomes an official recognition of experiences,
adding that a CCR will fit nicely in a med-school application.
Students and alumni can use their official CCR document
to showcase skill development by including it as supporting
documentation in portfolios and application packages for
employment, further post-secondary/graduate school, or
scholarships and bursaries. After participating in their orga-
nized activity, students are asked to choose up to five learn-
ing outcomes gained from the experience such as teamwork,
communication, critical thinking and self-awareness. Then
they write a reflection on how they achieved these outcomes.
“It’s one thing for a student to tell a potential employer
that they have leadership skills, says Olga Sherstobitoff,
Co-op Education & Employment Services Assistant. “A
co-curricular record helps our students illustrate the story
of their learning. I am a strong leader because…”
CCR programming is part of a larger effort to bolster work
readiness of all students at Selkirk College through career
education, work experience, co-op education and job search
assistance offered through Co-op Education & Employment
Services. According to the BC Labour Market Outlook, 48%
of the 917,000 job openings between 2017 and 2027 will be
filled by people entering the workforce for the first time.

Spawning Channel open house
Meadow Creek Spawning Channel is a great place to see
and learn about, spawning Kokanee, especially during the
free, annual Open House between 10 am and 2 pm, on
Saturday, September 8.
The channel is managed by the Ministry of Forests,
Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Devel-
opment (FLNR) and primarily funded by the Fish &
Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP). It is located
about four kilometers west of Meadow Creek. The
Open House provides a great opportunity to talk to
biologists and view the spawning Kokanee. There will
also be information about the Nutrient Restoration
Program in Kootenay Lake, as well as how to coexist
with grizzly bears.
The 3.3 kilometre looping channel, was built in 1967
with BC Hydro funds to compensate for upstream spawn-
ing habitat lost due to the construction of Duncan Dam.
The channel is open every day between 10 am and 2 pm
until the spawning season ends, typically by the end of
the month. With the congregating Kokanee, the channel
attracts both black and grizzly bears and FLNR may order
a temporary total closure to the public if there is high bear
activity during the regular open hours. For more infor-
mation about any closures, call the Province of BC at
250-354-6333.
The FWCP is a partnership between BC Hydro, the
Province of BC, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, First
Nations and Public Stakeholders, to conserve and enhance
fish and wildlife in watersheds impacted by BC Hydro
