METHOD STATEMENT

800mm STEEL AND 600mm PVC PIPELINE

EXCAVATION MOKOPANE

Scope and Purpose of Method Statement

The scope of works is to complete the installation of a new 800mm steel and 600mm PCV pipeline
between Mokopane High Reservoir and Piet-se-Kop Reservoir.

The purpose of this method statement is to outline the processes required for excavation and
trenching.

This outline will then form the basis for the implementation of the works, including the materials,
equipment and staff required to complete the mentioned task.

Excavation of Pipeline Route

Before any planned trenching is executed, test pits will be excavated along the pipe route to establish
the existence of any essential services which require protection or care during construction. These
test pits will be 1.5m wide by 1.5m deep.

Excavations be done by means of a 36 ton and 22 ton excavator at a depth ranging from 1.4m to
2.5m and an approx width of 1.0m – 1.6m.

Once excavation starts “fox holes” will be excavated at intervals of 19m to allowed and created space
for welding to joints at these sections.

Once Excavation activities start a soil sample will be taken and send to approved laboratory for
grading and testing as required in the contract.

Top soil in areas as instructed will be stored for rehabilitation purposes after works have been
completed. Where such a requirements exist, 150mm of top soil will be stockpiled along the trench
route.

Excavated materials will be stored next to the trench and where possible at least 1m away from the
edge of the excavations.

Barricade netting will be installed alongside the trench as waring to persons or animals during not
working hours.

Daily excavation checklist must be conducted by appointed competent inspector and safety
representative on site before work commence.

For excavations deeper than 1.5 meters the operator will be instructed to V-Shape the rest of the
excavation, to avoid trench to collapse and should it be noted that the soil conditions are not of
suitable materials and appear unsafe. In Deeper than 1.5 excavations hard hats must apply with
standard PPE.

Ladders will be placed in excavations every six meters for easy exit, further to this access ramps will
be created every 50m – 100m as escape routes should animal become trapped during non-working
hours.

Trench depth levels will be indicated every 20m – 30m with wooden markers / level sticks.

If soil conditions are bad and cracks appear shoring must be done with proper timber planks / shutter
board and steel jacks, where it is found that V-Shaping or Stepping can’t not be applied.

Backfilling

Excavated materials are stockpiled next to trench. Stockpiled materials to be used for backfilling will
be sifted through 19mm sifts. Care shall be taken to remove all stones with a nominal size bigger
that 19mm including boulders and vegetation or any other deleterious materials. Sifted materials
will be used to backfill trench and compacted in layers of 300mm. Topsoil will be spread over
backfilled area.
