1 Design Criteria
1.1 GENERAL:

Purpose of this presentation is to outline methodology for Structural Design. The Structural System
shall be a “Moment Resisting Frame System” (as per UBC – 97). An essentially complete space frame
shall provide support for vertical loads and lateral loads. The space frame shall be detailed as an
Intermediate Moment Resisting Frame concrete structure with infill brick masonry walls in Zone 2B
(Building Code of Pakistan with Seismic Provision BCP-2007).

1.2 CODES & STANDARDS:

The American codes & standards have been used for the design of the structure.

 ACI 318–08 Building Code Requirements For Structural Concrete

 BCP-2007 Building code of Pakistan (Seismic Provisions – 2007)
 IBC 2009 International Building Code
 UBC 1997 Uniform Building Code
 ASTM American Standards for Testing of Materials
 ASCE 7-05 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and other structures

1.3 MATERIAL STRENGTHS:

Concrete Cylinder Strengths at 28 days:

 Columns & Floor, Roof Beams 3000 psi ( 210 kg/m2 )

 RCC Slabs 3000 psi ( 210 kg/m2 )

Reinforcing Bars: Yield Strength:

 Reinforcing steel Grade- 40 (40,000 psi)

1.4 DESIGN LOADS:

Dead Loads (D)

Live Loads (L)
Superimposed Dead Loads
Earthquake Loads (E)

Dead Loads:

Following specific weights have been used for computing dead loads.

 Reinforced Concrete 150 lbs/ ft3 ( 23.46 KN/m3 )

 Plain Cement Concrete 144 lbs/ ft3 ( 22.46 KN/m3 )
 Brick Masonry 120 lbs/ ft3 (18.72 KN/m3 )
 Plaster 144 lbs/ ft3 ( 22.46 KN/m3 )

Live Loads:

The live loads imposed on the floors have been classified according to the use of the floors.
Live load on Offices = 50 psf
Live load on corridor = 80 psf
Live load on Roof = 30 psf

Superimposed Dead Loads:

 Floor finish 40 lbs/ft2

 9” & 4-1/2” Brick masonry walls Loads applied as per location and weights of the walls

Earthquake Loads (E):

Earthquake loading have been based upon UBC 1997 & followings.

 Seismic Zone 2B
 Soil Profile Type SD.
 Response Modification Factor 5.5
