the international building transportation industry. Since the incep-

expanded core products to include ELEVATOR WORLD India, an
extensive network of websites, a bi-weekly e-mail newsletter (Elenet®)
and the Source©, the most inclusive industry directory.

savings are realized by the simplification of the parking
structure’s fire suppression and life-safety systems for
what are essentially unoccupied vehicle storage facilities.
Many other APS benefits are also described in the feature
articles published here.
In addition to traditional elevators, readers will see the
use of a clever “Puzzle Parking” arrangement that moves
cars both horizontally and vertically throughout a storage
rack. And the amazing “Robotic Valet” picks up a motor
vehicle, transports it on and off an elevator and into a
parking bay. This system is truly remarkable and can be
installed not only in a new structure, but also in an exist-
ing parking garage. These parking systems make good
use of the industrial technology that is common in manu-
facturing facilities, and when applied in conjunction with
elevators, they solve a lot of the parking issues that have
become prevalent in major cities worldwide.
We trust you will enjoy reading about these special auto-
mated vertical and horizontal transportation systems, in
addition to the full complement of elevator-industry
news and technical information included in this quarter’s
magazine. It is a pleasure for us to be able to bring this
information to your attention, and we look forward to
hearing from you with any comments or questions that
you may have on the content in this issue of ELEVATOR
WORLD India.

Strakosch would have impacted my employer’s decision.
Jobless and with a family to feed, I contemplated putting
my experience to use by providing elevator consultancy.
A well wisher, Abhay Chordia, took the decision out of
my hands by pushing a huge project on me. Overnight, I
had to round up my years of practical experience and
speak the language of an expert. The first reference
that came to my mind was Strakosch. (The second was
ELEVATOR WORLD.) I ordered my copy of The Vertical
Transportation Handbook from EW’s online bookstore and
worked to master it. While it is not up to me to say
whether I mastered Strakosch or have become anything
in the industry, it has surely given me a good foundation
beyond just consultant talk and has helped me polish my
years of field experience.
The third edition of The Vertical Transportation Handbook ELEVATOR WORLD’s editorial staff and your author
(along with Dr. Gina Barney’s Elevator Traffic Handbook
and EW’s magazines) soon became my constant com-
panion and reference material for most of my discus-
sions. Two years back, I had the opportunity to meet
Dr. Barney at Interlift 2009. At that time, it struck me that
I had to make an effort to meet the other two people who
had helped consolidate the foundation of my (limited)
knowledge.
With a little cajoling, I managed to get myself invited to
Mobile, Alabama, the headquarters of Elevator World,
Inc. It was a great opportunity to meet the folks who put
together the issues of EW month after month. I was
speechless as I went through the EW archives, starting
from the first issue, not to forget the issue from the month
and year of my birth; it was like being part of history. But
the cherry on the cake was meeting William C. Sturgeon,
the founder of EW. With clear instructions that I shouldn’t (l-r) Your author and William C. Sturgeon

Stair Climbers
Stair climbers were designed and remain under patent
by AAT Alber Antreibstechnik Albstadt Germany. These
are chairs that climb up and down staircases one step at
a time. They are operated by a second person holding
them (Figure 3).
Stair climbers can negotiate up to 300 steps without a
battery recharge. They can negotiate straight or curved
staircases, and landings. They can be folded and carried
in the trunk of a car, and are economical when compared
to installing two straight stair lifts. Earlier versions had
wheels instead of struts for climbing. Continued
