ABSTRACT

This research is about the effects of MOBA games to the students of Muntinlupa Science

High School. The researcher will conduct an online survey to the students of Muntinlupa Science

High School. The participants will be answering seven questions with regards to the effects of

MOBA games to students.

MOBA (Multiplayer online battle arena) games usually have two opposing teams whose

goal collectively as a team is generally to destroy their enemy's base to win, though some games

have the option of different victory conditions. Each team most typically consists of five players.

Typically, there is one main structure which must be destroyed to win; destroying other

structures within the opposing team's base may confer other benefits. Defensive structures,

which are usually automatic "sentry guns", are in place to prevent this, as well as relatively weak

computer-controlled units which periodically spawn at each base and travel down predefined

paths toward the opposing team's base. There are typically 3 "lanes" that are the main ways of

getting from one base to another; in between the lanes is an uncharted area called the "jungle."

A player controls a single powerful in-game unit generally called a 'hero'. When a hero

stands near a killed enemy unit or kills an enemy unit, it gains experience points which allow the

hero to level up. When a hero levels up, it has the ability to strengthen its abilities, of which it

typically has four. When a hero dies, it has to wait a designated time, which generally increases

as it levels up, until it revives at the team's base.

Chapter 1

Introduction

The Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA), also known as action real-time strategy

(ARTS) is a genre of online games where a player controls a hero in one of the opposing teams.

The main purpose of this game is to destroy the enemy's basic structure with the help of units

controlled by artificial intelligence or AI that periodically appears and marching forward to their

respective paths. The characters of the players usually have different powers and abilities that are

able to level up alongside the game and help with a team's strategy. These can contribute to the

increase of the probability of a team to win the game.

This genre is derived from Aeon of Strife (AoS), which comes from a map on the

StarCraft game where four players have individually controlled units that are assisted by weaker

units moving through artificial intelligence. Defense of the Ancients (DotA) is a game inspired

by Aeon of Strife for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and Frozen Throne. These are one of the first

names in the field of MOBA.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of MOBA games to the students of

Muntinlupa Science High School. It also aims to showcase what are the good and bad effects of

these types of games to the students of Muntinlupa Science High School. And most of all, to

expand the knowledge of people about MOBA games and how it affects the physical, mental,

and emotional state.

Questions:

• What MOBA games do you play?

• What year level did you start playing MOBA games?

• Why are you playing MOBA games?

• Do you think playing affects the students’ studies?

• What is “too much playing” for you?

• What are the good effects of playing MOBA games on you?

• What are the bad effects of playing MOBA games on you?

Methodology

This research will be conducted in a descriptive manner and by gathering data or surveys.
Descriptive research describes what exists and may help to uncover new facts and meaning.
The purpose of descriptive research is to observe, describe, and document aspects of a situation
as it naturally occurs
. A survey is a list of questions aimed at extracting specific data from a particular group
of people that is referred to as a population. Through this chosen method, the questions that are
based on the topic can be answered.

Participants

People who were subjected to questioning were twenty students of Muntinlupa Science

High School who often play MOBA games. The students answered seven questions about the

effects of playing these types of games.

Conclusions and Recommendations

I. Conlusion

According to a survey answered by the participants, most of them played Leauge of

Legends (LoL). A large percentage of participants said that they started playing MOBA games

when they were in the fifth grade. Most of the participants said they played MOBA games

because it was fun and that this did not affect studies.

The researcher can therefore conclude that a large number of the participants achieved

happiness in playing MOBA games. These types of games helped in sharpening their skills in

such things as their perseverance, problem-solving skills, reflexes, hand-eye coordination

II. Recommendations

The researcher recoomends the following:

• Researching the psychological effects of online games.

• The researchera should increase their number of participants for more accurate

results about the effects of MOBA games to the students of Muntinlupa Science

High School.

• Conducting a research on how fulfillment and happiness is achieved through

MOBA games.
