<SUMMARY-INTRODUCTION>

To determine:

The free energy required to synthesize ATP in the human hepatocyte when the
physiological concentrations of ATP , ADP , and Pi are 3.5 , 1.50 , and 5.0 mM ,
respectively.

Introduction:

The ATP refers to adenosine triphosphate. A complex organic compound cell produces
during the process of cellular respiration. Cellular respiration is the process by which
energy is produced in a cell. Energy is released from the breakdown of glucose in cellular
respiration. This energy is then used by the cell for performing various life processes.
Mitochondria are considered as the powerhouses of the cell, which synthesizes energy in
the form of ATP .

<EXPLANATION>

Explanation:

The given concentrations of ATP , ADP , and Pi are 3.5 , 1.50 , and 5.0 mM .

The value of ( K eq ) is calculated as follows:

[ATPeq ]
( K eq ) 
[Pi eq ][ADPeq ]
[3.5mM]

[1.5mM][5.0mM]
0.0035M

0.0000075M
 4.7 102 M 1

The value of gas constant R is 0.0083 kJ / mole  K . The equilibrium constant is

calculated as follows at the give temperature 310 K :

(G)   RT ln( K eq )
