The Education System of Bangladesh: An Observation

The education system of Bangladesh is not quite satisfactory as there are certain criticisms in
vogue about the effectiveness, fruitfulness, quality, standard etc. of total education system over
the years. After achieving independence, there were hopes, aspirations and expectations among
the people of all walks of life in achieving true emancipation from all sorts of socio-economic,
social-state evils and limitations.

Bangladesh would be a true nation-state considering its differences in language, religion,

ethnicity, region etc. and preserving its cultural pluralism and diversity which have flowed over a
thousand year.

The co-existence of different cultural, religion-based, social, ethnic, political factions reflects
multi-dimensional multi-culturism and multi-lingual features of this delta though there were
waves of clashes, uncertainties and mischief among the existing groups observed through the
passing centuries, decades and years. The kings and kingdoms built and destroyed, the
boundaries of the kingdoms altered, the pages of history turned by generations after generations.
The flows of the rivers continued relentlessly; the societies passed their time.

Cultures, ideologies, mythologies, beliefs, religions have interacted, interchanged and improved
over the years. Different Nations appeared and disappeared but left their remains and legacies in
culture, language, religion etc. There have been sufficiency and poverty, sorrow and pleasure,
conflict and peace prevailed among the living, destroyed, retreated and obliterated communities,
kingdoms, nations, issues of interest etc.

Remembering , considering, reminiscing and re-thinking all types of social and historical
mutations taken place before their eyes; the people of Bangladesh have demanded such type of
education system which reflects the historical, present and futures hopes, aspirations and
exceptions of all existing cultures and ethnicities.

Besides, the changing world demands regular and timely innovations in knowledge and its
applications, which help the country to cope up with the other existing nations in the world
especially in this modern and post-modern era.

Though some timely policies and laws in the education sector are promulgated after
independence, these are yet to be fully implemented and the continued and unpleasant alteration
in the education system in terms of syllabus, content, exam system, curriculum etc. is not
absolutely beneficial for the blooming potentials of our total education system.

We should clearly remember that it’s education which helps the learners to expand their hidden
potentials in the existing socio-economic conditions and it’s education which brings about a
radical change in the psycho-physical development of the learners.

Education is the yardstick of development, peace, progress, ethics and idealism and it’s education
which helps us to asses, evaluate and justify the true demands, needs and wants of the changing
society directing the ways and means of fulfilling these in the ever-widening socio-economic
spectrum.

There are a considerable number of educational institutions in different levels of education

system in our country which indicates that Bangladesh is greatly advanced in establishing
education –based society. The good number of universities in Bangladesh is actually a good
achievement in the field of tertiary education system.

Bangladesh is yet to advance further in establishing education for all in the context of its socio-
economic spectrum whereas there are many shortage, limitations, complexities and
complications in our education and education system in our country. The authorities concerned
are yet to take initiatives, activities and enthusiasm in developing, reforming and strengthening
the education base of our country in the near future. It’s imperative and essential to ensure,
establish and rejuvenate qualitative, standardized and global scale education considering the
demands, needs and wants of the changing times.

The improvement of student-teacher ratio, the reduction of drop-out through improving socio-
economic variables like poverty, malnutrition, hunger, malnutrition, maltreatment etc., the
establishment of sufficient numbers of educational institutions for the increasing population , the
assurance of monitoring, regulation and supervision of the total education sphere through skilled,
morally competent and trained individuals –are some of the significant measures by which our
total education system can achieve its acceptance, recognition and standardization of quality and
quantity.

The education boards and other education management institutions need to be re-arranged,
reformed and re-experimented gradually in line with the demand of the time. It’s crucial to
enhance and encourage education research throughout the country for the development of
education system of our country.

The three-tier education system existed in our country like general education, education in
foreign medium and religious education, must be harmonized and equalized in the question of
reducing differences in the taste, attitude, beliefs, values etc. of the learners, considering unity,
harmony, coherence and continuity in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual, multi-ethnic, multi-racial
and multi-religious spectrum in our longer-lasting heritage.

Considering the history, flow and continuity of education system throughout the ages, the
gradual development of a concerted, co-ordinated, harmonized, coherent and timely education
system is significant and essential in establishing an education system of values, ethics,
timeliness, standardization, productivity, development etc. though the experts classify the
education system in terms of time, religion, culture etc.

As education and education system influence and are influenced by many socio-economic, geo-
political and global issues incessantly over the time, the stakeholders of education and education
system have the responsibility in responding timely, effectively and efficiently preserving its
genuinity , standard, quality, universality and significance.
