Time Motivation and Introduction:
Align these with the segment
1. Begin the lesson with a prayer by the prayer leaders. where they will be introduced.
00:00
2. Gather the students on the mat and introduce the book The Giving The Giving Tree
Tree by Shel Silverstein. Analyse the cover, ask for predictions, and
explain that this book seems like a simple, easy book to read, but it
has a message for the reader. Invite students to attempt to discern
the message as it is read.

3. Read The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.

4. Discuss the story with the students in a free discussion, guiding

students somewhat to consider the following points:
 The relationship between the boy and the tree.
 How the tree felt after giving the gifts to the boy.
 Whether the boy was selfish.
 How the boy could have acted differently.
 Altruism and gratitude
(This activity requires the capability of literacy, as it
draws upon literary knowledge).
5. Ask students to consider a time in their lives when they did not show
gratitude as they should have. Ask them to consider how they felt.

6. Share with the students a time when you received something and did
not show gratitude. Establish that people like being thanked, and that
00:10 it is good to show gratitude.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

1. Return students to their desks. Ask:

"Can anyone remember what we have learned about God in our
last few RE lessons?"

2. Receive answers, then briefly summate, focusing upon Gods power

and what he does for us through His power.

3. Ask:
"Do you think God wants to be thanked for what He does?"

4. Students conduct a think-pair-share for this question.

5. Ask where the best place for answers is. Take out the Bible, and Bible
read out Matthew 15:32-39 and Luke 22:19-20. Ask students what
the similarity between the two stories are (Jesus thanks God in both
stories).

00:20 6. Explain that if Jesus thanked God, we should follow His example and
thank Him also.

7. Set the activity. Students are to compose a short prayer, using the Worksheet
provided sheet for assistance. They are encouraged to use
previously learned poetic devices such as verse and rhyme, but it is
not necessary. The prayer must describe what God does for them
through His power, and thank Him personally. (This activity requires
literacy as it is a written activity that uses literary techniques. It draws
upon the religious capability of Faith as it concerns itself with prayer).

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

00:28 1. Students read their prayer confidently to the class. Since it is a
prayer, students must maintain a respectful listening environment.

2. Collect up the prayers, ensuring each student has written their name
on it.
Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

1. Students are to clear their desks and sit quietly, ready for the next
lesson.

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will they be

assessed?)

The prayers are to be assessed as they are read verbally to the class.
Students will be assessed upon the content of the prayer as well as the
oral presentation, but not on the literary qualities of the prayer. The
teacher will give a small amount of verbal feedback after each prayer is
read. The following points are to be looked for:

 Prayer of thanks
 Expresses gratitude
 Focus on Gods Power
 Oral presentation skills
Prayer of Thanks
One of the many prayers that we say is prayers of thanks to God. In the space
below, write a prayer thanking God for everything he has done with His great
power.

Dear God,
