Resources/References
Time Motivation and Introduction:
Align these with the segment
00:00
1. Begin the lesson by having the prayer leaders start with a prayer. where they will be introduced.

2. After the prayer, gather children to the mat and read to them
Matthew 12:28-34. Give them some time to reflect upon the passage,
and then discuss each of the following wonder questions:

I wonder why these are the most important commandments.

I wonder who our neighbour is.
I wonder how we can love God.
(This is an example of the capability of critical and creative
thinking, as it requires creative reflection of a gospel passage).

3. Draw out the conversation on that last question. Connect it with

previous knowledge from this unit, that God is a powerful God who
provides for us, for which Jesus and Christians thank Him. One way
of thanking Him is to follow Jesus' commandment to love God with all
your heart, soul, mind and strength.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

1. Explain to students that the ten commandments give us information Smartboard and Computer
00:10
on how to love God. Show the video The Ten Commandments to
refresh their memories on what they are. https://www.youtube.com/watc
h?v=gs1eop9MNgU&t=11s
2. Explain to the students that the first three commandments help us to
show love to God.

3. Write the three commandments on the board, and underneath give

an example of how we keep the commandment and how we fail to
keep the commandment. (These examples are given on their
handout sheets also).

4. Break the class into three groups. Each group is given a tablet
00:15 worksheet with either the first, second or third commandment on it. Worksheets
The group must brainstorm some ideas to add in both categories of
the tablet. The categories are:

People live out the first commandment when they:

People fail to live out the first commandment when they:

(This is an example of the capability of personal and social

competence, as it requires group work. This is also an example of
the religious capability of Charity, as it is a brainstorm of how we can
show our love to God).

5. If the groups have time they can decorate their tablet.

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

00:25
1. Each group is to share their commandment and the responses they
brainstormed to the class. Their commandment is either collected
and put on a display on the wall, or is returned for further decorating.

2. The teacher can summarise each commandment at the end of each

groups sharing, giving feedback, correcting misunderstandings and
affirming achievement.
Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

1. Students must clear their desks and line up to go to lunch.

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will they be

assessed?)

Anecdotal assessment will be made on the students' capability to

brainstorm effectively in a group. Informal assessment will also be used
after their presentations, with immediate feedback being given.
The First Commandment:
"I am the Lord your God, you
shall not have other Gods
besides me"
People live out the first commandment when they:

Thank God for all He has done for us

People do not live out the first commandment

when they:

Deny that God exists
