Lowndes supes discuss how to fill county prosecutor position

on how to fill the county
prosecutor’s job after the
November election.

judge, Sand-
ers said at
the meet-
ing.
“So that
means we’ll
have to ap-

her term as soon as she
is sworn in on Jan. 2,” he
said. “I thought we should
discuss how we want to
fill that position.”
With another year re-
maining on the county
prosecutor’s term, super-
visors debated whether to
establish a policy that pre-
vents those who serve out
a term from seeking the
same office at the subse-
quent election.

change in policy, but Dis-

Brooks said it might be
better to handle those sit-
uations on a case by case
basis.
“It might be, in the
future, a situation where
the board supports the
person who is filling out a
term to serve permanent-
ly, if it’s the voters’ will,”
Brooks said.
Sanders said he was
open to any ideas.
“That’s why I put this
on the agenda,” he said.
“The reason is that I’ve
had three or four people
approach me about this
and ask for my support.
But I really have a prob-
lem with choosing some-
body who’s going to run
for the office in a year be-
cause it gives that person
an unfair advantage. It
could send a message that
the person we appoint has
the support of the board
when it’s time for the elec-
tion.
“I’d rather have a pol-
icy or something where
the person who we ap-
point agrees not to run in
the election,” he added.
Supervisors ultimate-
ly took no action, which
Sanders said was OK.
“We’ve got plenty of
time,” he said. “It’s just
something we should be
thinking about how we
want to handle.”
County court judges
hear civil actions under
$75,000, as well as civil
appeals from the justice
and municipal courts.
They try misdemeanor
criminal cases and con-
duct preliminary hear-
ings, in addition to serv-
ing as the youth (juvenile)
court judge.
In other business, the
board:
■ approved an amend-
ed contract with Baptist
Medical Group for clinic
services. County admin-
istrator Ralph Billingsley
made the recommenda-
tion after working out a
new agreement; and
■ approved a reso-
lution that will ask the
Legislature to change
the valuation date on the
county’s hospital trust
fund from Dec. 31 to Aug.
31. That change will al-
low supervisors to know
how much revenue can be
pulled from the trust fund
profits before completing
its budget in September.
Previously, the board had
no fixed estimation of
those funds when its fis-
cal year began each Oct.
1.

auctioned Dec. 4 at a law
office in New York. What
they still don’t know is
how that auction will af-
fect the individual stores
that lease space at the
mall.
“We haven’t heard any-
thing at all,” said Horne,
who has worked at Burke
for 13 years. “What I’d
like to know is what this
means for the employees
and myself. Where do we
stand? Do you need to
start looking for jobs? Are
there other options for
our store to relocate?
“I’ve had several cus-
tomers mention it (Mon-
day) morning,” she add-
ed. “They want to know
what’s going to happen,
but I really don’t know
any more than they do.
They like shopping here
and they’ve been saying
that maybe we can move
to a new location if some-
thing happens here. I’m
hoping that, too. Jobs are
hard to find.”
If a new owner takes
over Leigh Mall and
Burke — along with
stores like Hobby Lobby,
Planet Fitness, Hibbett,
Books-a-Million and oth-
ers — get to stay, Horne
is hopeful mall conditions
will improve.
“I’ll be honest. It would
just about have to be bet-
ter than it is right now,”
she said.
Prime real estate

ter than the status-quo”
attitude seems to be the
consensus among city
leaders where Leigh Mall
is concerned, and several
have said they are hope-
ful an ownership change
could help revitalize the
troubled property.
“I think it would be
great if somebody gets
hold of it and does what
needs to be done, which
is a total remodel,” said
Ward 5 Councilman Ste-
phen Jones. “If somebody
invests money to buy it,
I would hope they would
improve it. The way I see
it though, it can stay the
same or get better. I don’t
see it getting worse.”
Ward 6 Councilman
Bill Gavin, in whose ward
Leigh Mall sits, agrees.
“The roof is leaking,
the parking lot is in bad
shape, and
things like
that are
keeping
quality ten-
ants away,”
he said. “I
mean, if
the roof on Jones
my house is
leaking, I’m going to get it
fixed.”
Leigh Mall sits on a
“prime piece of real es-
tate” amid Columbus’ re-
tail center with frontage
on U.S. Highways 82 and
45. Since 2014, the mall
has picked up high pro-
file tenants like Hobby
Lobby and Planet Fitness,
but in recent years it also
has lost JCPenney, Radio
Shack, Sears and a couple
of jewelry stores, among
others.
That has triggered
what Golden Triangle

a “death spiral” at Leigh
Mall.
“You’re not bringing in
enough revenue to keep
the place up and when
you can’t keep the place
up, the quality of the ten-
ants goes down, which
means you start getting
less revenue in rents,”
Higgins explained.

and up until Oct. 1 was
contracted to provide
industrial and retail re-
cruitment for Columbus,
said about a half-dozen
serious developers had
unsuccessfully tried to
purchase Leigh Mall

America’s values and entering the political arena
Having just read The Soul
of America by Jon Meacham,
I find his message relevant to
our times. He describes how
we have faced political and
moral crises in the past, yet
have found ways to move for-
ward and listen to our “better
angels.” We have not done it in
a perfect way or with perfect
leaders, but our sense of fair-
ness and justice have won.
He gives examples like

The potential
of a new Leigh
Mall owner
When The Dispatch reported
Leigh Mall would go up for auction
in December, it created an imme-
diate response in the community
and rightly so.
When the mall opened 45 years
ago, it immediately became the
catalyst for retail in the city. But
for well over a decade now, the
mall has been in decline. Sears
and JC Penney, the anchors of the
300,000 square foot mall, left while
eight of the remaining 34 store-
fronts are unoccupied.
As the mall owner, Security
National, fell into bankruptcy,
the mall fell into what Joe Max
Higgins of the Golden Triangle
Development LINK called a death
spiral — low revenues led to
deteriorating conditions and those
conditions made the mall less
appealing to new tenants, leading
to lower rents.
Current tenants complain that
repairs aren’t made and customers
are afraid to shop at the mall after
dark because of a lack of security.
Over the past 15 years, a
half-dozen developers have
approached the owners to buy
the property, but have balked on
paying the price Security National
has set.
While the upcoming auction
creates a sense of uncertainty
about the future of this important
part of the city, in some respects it
may turn out to be beneficial.
“Whatever happens, it has to
be better than the way it is now,”
Burke’s Outlet manager Evelyn
Horne observed.
Whatever happens, it will likely
have little short-term impact.
Even if the mall is sold at
auction on Dec. 4, it will be some
time before any changes are made.
The new owner is likely to want
to maintain whatever revenue
streams exists and there is also
the matter of what happens to the
leases held by the current tenants.
Most importantly, it’s unlikely
someone would buy it and close it.
But with a new owner, there
will be changes and there are any
number of possibilities.
A good example might be Tu-
pelo, which had two malls open in
the 1970s, both of which had failed
by the early 1990s. The Tupelo
mall, located near North Missis-
sippi Medical Center is now used
as medical offices. The Downtown
Mall was purchased by the city of
Tupelo, which tore down the build-
ing and built the BancorpSouth
Center on the site.
Leigh Mall could also be rein-
vented as the kind of retail devel-
opment better-suited to how we
shop today. There is also talk of a
mixed-use development that would
include apartments, entertainment
options, restaurants and retail.
What happens at the property at
this point is impossible to predict.
But given the state of the mall
now, we agree that whatever the
future holds is preferable to the
“death spiral” Leigh Mall rep-
resents now.
Although in decline, no one
seriously questions how important
the mall property is to our com-
munity. That is the one thing that
hasn’t changed since Leigh Mall
opened its doors in 1973.

Mississippi city: Vigil for 2 officers killed in shootout

dents mourning two officers
killed in a weekend shootout in
a small Mississippi city left ros-
es, balloons and American flags
at police headquarters Sunday
and held an evening vigil in
their memory.
The candlelight vigil for
Officer James White, 35, and
Cpl. Zach Moak, 31, was held
outside the Brookhaven Police
Department where the offi-
cers had worked. There, every
few minutes, people pulled up
during the day in cars, leaving
flowers, teddy bears and bal-
loons not far from where their
patrol cars were parked. Each
car was adorned with an Amer-
ican flag and a wreath on its
front grill.
Police Chief Kenneth Collins
called residents to Sunday’s
vigil to honor these young men
who gave their lives” serving
the city of more than 12,000,
located about 60 miles south
of the state capital of Jackson.
He appealed, along with local
pastors, for unity during a half-
hour vigil attended by about
200 people. They lit candles,
heard consoling messages from
the speakers and sang “Amaz-
ing Grace.”
White and Moak were killed
early Saturday.
Warren Strain of the Mis-
sissippi Department of Public
Safety said Sunday that the
shooting suspect, 25-year-old
Marquis Flowers, was hospi-
talized after being wounded in
the confrontation. Strain said
charges are pending against
Flowers and that investigation
is ongoing. He did not provide
an update on Flowers’ medical
condition.
Strain had said earlier that
the officers were called to a
house in Brookhaven at about
5 a.m. Saturday for a report of
shots fired. Following an ex-
change of gunfire that left both
officers “mortally wounded,”
the two were pronounced dead
at a local hospital, Strain said.
He identified the weapon used
as a handgun but wouldn’t elab-
orate on the circumstances sur-
rounding the shooting.
On Sunday, children jumped
on a trampoline not far from the
shooting scene at a Brookha-
ven duplex. What appeared to
be several bullet holes in the
aged blue siding of the duplex
were pointed out with evidence
markers by investigators. What
looked like blood stains could
be seen on the ground steps
away.
The Brookhaven chief Col-
lins has called White and Moak,
both residents of Lincoln Coun-
ty, “heroes.”
Hanna Hux, a Brookhaven
resident who has known White
since she was 12, called the
slain officer one of her “oldest,
dearest friends.” She said she
was stunned by his death.
“Everybody needs to come
together and support one an-
other rather than fighting
against one another,” she told
The Associated Press after
leaving flowers beside both offi-
cers’ squad cars. “We need lots
of prayers.”
This is the second time in as
many years that a law enforce-
ment official has been killed in
the line of duty in the Brookha-
ven area. Last year Lincoln
County Sheriff’s Deputy Wil-
liam Durr, who also spent four
years with Brookhaven police,
was responding to a call when
he was shot to death. Authori-
ties said the gunman shot and
killed seven other people in a
killing spree in and around the
Brookhaven area.
Willie Cory Godbolt was
arrested May 28, 2017, and is
awaiting trial. He is pleading
not guilty and faces the death
penalty if convicted.

Rush succumbed to
complications from a
stroke he suffered in 2003,

Born in Philadelphia,
Mississippi, Rush settled
in Chicago as an adult and

clubs, wearing a cowboy
hat and sometimes strum-
ming his guitar upside
down for effect.
He catapulted to in-
ternational fame in 1956
with his first recording on

Quit You Baby,” which

He was a key architect

A Mississippi judge declared a
second mistrial Monday in the capi-
tal murder case of a man accused of
setting a woman on fire, after jurors
once again said they couldn’t reach
a verdict.

ized after being hit by a
car in north Columbus
Monday night.
The victim was walk-
ing near the intersection
of 22nd Street and Sev-
enth Avenue North when
the vehicle struck him,
according to a Columbus
Police Department press
release. The driver im-
mediately stopped the ve-
hicle and called 911.
The victim was taken
first to Baptist Memorial
Hospital-Golden Triangle
and later flown to North
Mississippi Medical Cen-
ter in Tupelo with “seri-
ous” injuries, the press
release said. Authorities
did not know his status
as of press time today.
The accident occurred
at about 7 p.m.

her more qualified than
some other employees,
but she was not given the
opportunity to apply for
the office position or for
others she’s asked about.
Another complaint,
from road department
employee Eric Clay,
stems from a Friday con-
versation with Baggett. In
a recording The Dispatch
listened to after Monday’s
meeting, Clay, who is a
truck driver, confronts
Baggett about a position
that was given to another
employee.
Baggett, during the
course of the conversa-
tion, questions Clay’s ed-
ucation and at one point,
calls his work “mediocre.”
“I don’t know you that
well,” Baggett says. “And
the stuff I know about you
is not that great.”
The complaints are
not the first against Bag-
gett. In July, former road
department sign techni-
cian Justin Denson filed
a federal lawsuit that ac-
cused Baggett of making
several racially-charged
remarks toward him — in-
cluding saying that Den-
son looked like a “black
savage Viking” — and re-
taliating to the employee’s
complaints by firing him.
Both Baggett and Denson
are African-American.
Depositions in Den-
son’s lawsuit are sched-
uled for this week, ac-
cording to supervisors.
Supervisors also re-
ceived a letter from at-
torney William Starks
in May on behalf of road
department employee
Casey Harrison that ac-
cused Baggett of verbal
harassment, including
threatening to terminate
Harrison.
Opting for a lighter
punishment
District 4 Supervisor
Bricklee Miller attempt-
ed to suspend Baggett for
one week and place him on
probation for 90 days after
supervisors returned to
open session. However,
that vote failed 3-2, with
only District 1 Supervisor
John Montgomery voting
with Miller.
“We don’t need to sus-
pend anyone for a week,
because that’s taking a
week away from work,”
District 5 Supervisor Joe
Williams said. “I don’t
think it takes that to send
a message. If anything,
we want to send a mes-
sage that that kind of be-
havior will not be tolerat-
ed. It doesn’t take a week
suspension to be able to
do that.”
After the failed vote,
Trainer suggested and
moved for the two-day
suspension, with a second
from Howard and sugges-
tion that supervisors put
a letter of reprimand in
Baggett’s file.
Baggett, when he first
emerged from the board-
room during the execu-
tive session, said supervi-
sors were “talking about
if they want to fire me.”
Baggett seemed dismis-
sive of the potential pun-
ishment while waiting, at
one point saying: “In this
position, you have to learn
to deal with things. That’s
politics.”

the meeting about the
suspension, Baggett de-
clined to elaborate.
“It is what it is,” Bag-
gett said. “I’m a big boy. I
can handle it.”
Trainer, after the meet-
ing, said a wide range of
options were discussed
during the executive ses-
sion. He acknowledged
that termination was an
option to some board
members, though he
would not say who. How-
ever, he said there’s not
currently enough support
on the board for it.
“He serves at the will
and pleasure of the board
and I think it’s not a secret
that some of the members
are not satisfied,” Trainer
said. “That may be some-
thing they may well con-
sider if the support was
there. But at this point,
there’s not enough reason
or support to do that.”
Miller: ‘This appears
to be a pattern’
Miller, who has often
clashed with Baggett in
meetings, said she’s con-
cerned about the number
of complaints accumulat-
ing against Baggett. She
said further action may
be taken with regards
to Clay’s complaint. She
said Baggett denied the
claims before Clay’s attor-
ney allowed the recording
to be released after the
meeting.
“I believe the whole
board is concerned,” Mill-
er said. “This appears
to be a pattern, with the
same types of complaints,
whether it be (Equal Em-
ployment Opportunity
Commission) complaints,
the letter from the attor-
ney where we had an ad-
mission after or even the
lawsuit that appears to be
moving forward and has
the same type of tone be-
hind it.”
Miller also said su-
pervisors discussed “all
types of action” for Bag-
gett’s discipline during
executive session.
Trainer said supervi-
sors are trying to further
determine “if and where”
there are problems with
Baggett in the road de-
partment. He also said he
felt there was some “un-
necessary agitation” from
disgruntled employees to
highlight issues with Bag-
gett.
“What has to happen
is, we’re taking this ac-
tion to see if we can flesh
out and find some other
things we need to ad-
dress,” he said. “We’re not
excluding anyone. We’re
not putting all the blame
on him or them. But at
the same time, we want to
send a message that we’re
serious about this. As of
right now, he’s the one we
hold accountable for that
department.”

Betts, Yelich clear choices for MVP

NEW YORK — Now
that the regular season is
finally in the books, time
to bestow baseball’s big-
gest individual prizes. It
took one extra day to sort
out the playoff bracket,
but these debates have
been underway for weeks.
Christian Yelich seems
a cinch for NL MVP, but is
it Mookie Betts or Boston
teammate J.D. Martinez
in the American League?
Jacob deGrom or Max
Scherzer for the NL Cy
Young Award?
Shohei Ohtani or Mi-
guel Andujar for AL Rook-
ie of the Year?
Martinez has been a
monster at the plate in
his first season with the
Red Sox after signing a
$110 million, five-year
contract. He launched 43
home runs and led the
majors with 130 RBIs. He
compiled a 1.031 OPS and
hit .330, finishing second
to Betts (.346) in the bat-
ting race.
All big reasons why
Boston had the best re-
cord in baseball at 108-54.
Hitting at the top of the
order, Betts had 32 hom-
ers, 80 RBIs, 129 runs and
a whopping 1.078 OPS.
But on defense and the
bases, it’s no compari-
son. Martinez started 57
games in the outfield but
93 at designated hitter.
Betts, a sensational de-
fender, started 115 games
in right field and 13 in cen-
ter. Plus, he stole 30 bases
in 36 attempts.
All those elite skills.
That’s why he led the ma-
jors in wins above replace-
ment with 10.9 (per base-
ball-reference.com).
“I’d vote for Betts,”
Baltimore manager Buck
Showalter said. “The im-
pact that he has defen-
sively is what sets him
over the top for me. I told
people, he’s the best right
fielder I’ve ever seen. He
makes plays that people
in the stands don’t realize
are not routine. Throws
well. Steals a base when
he needs to. He’s special.”
Angels star Mike Trout
merits his annual look,
along with Houston third
baseman Alex Bregman,
Cleveland infielder Jose
Ramirez and Indians
shortstop Francisco Lin-
dor.
But in the end, Betts
is the clear winner after
being runner-up to Trout
two years ago.
Voting by the Baseball
Writers’ Association of
America is conducted be-
fore the postseason open-
er Tuesday night, and re-
sults will be announced in
November.
Here are our selections
for the other top awards:
n NATIONAL LEAGUE MVP: With
a huge second half, Yelich practically
carried Milwaukee to an NL Central
championship and the best record in the
league during his first season with the
team. He came within a wisp of becom-
ing the first Triple Crown winner in the
National League since Joe “Ducky” Med-
wick in 1937. Yelich won the batting title
with a .326 average and had 36 homers
to go with 110 RBIs, 118 runs, 22 steals
in 26 tries and a 1.000 OPS that led
the league by a wide margin. He came
through with three hits and an RBI as the
Brewers beat the Cubs 3-1 on Monday
in a one-game tiebreaker for the division
crown at Wrigley Field.
That’s how MVP awards are won,
and this election won’t be close. Could
be unanimous.
“Down the stretch, he’s been willing
that team it seems like. One night it’s the
cycle, one night it’s a homer late, another
night he walks five times. I think it’s Yelly,”
said Don Mattingly, manager of the Mi-
ami Marlins team that traded Yelich last
offseason.
n AL CY YOUNG: Young lefty Blake
Snell of the Tampa Bay Rays wins with
a 21-5 record and league-leading 1.89
ERA in 180 2/3 innings. But it should be
a tighter vote than projected. The guy
getting overlooked a bit is Houston ace
Justin Verlander (16-9, 2.52), who had
a lower WHIP than Snell in 214 innings.
Verlander struck out a league-high 290
hitters and walked only 37. Incredible.
n NL CY YOUNG: At one point late
in the season, this was a close and com-
pelling three-way race between deGrom,
Scherzer and Aaron Nola. And then de-
Grom left everyone in the dust, finishing
with a major league-low 1.70 ERA in 217
innings. His pedestrian 10-9 record for
a struggling New York Mets team that
provided little support? Pretty irrelevant.
Nola tailed off a bit with Philadelphia
and went 17-6 with a 2.37 ERA and 224
strikeouts in 212 1/3 innings. Scherzer,
winner of two consecutive NL Cy Young
Awards with Washington and the 2013
AL prize for Detroit, was 18-7 with a 2.53
ERA in 220 2/3 innings. He struck out
300 batters, 31 more than deGrom, but
also gave up 13 more home runs.
“I would say it’s still pretty close,”
Mattingly said. “I’m probably like every-
body else, because I’m kind of like, what
Jacob’s doing is incredible, you know?
Max, too, but Max has done it so many
times. So I think deGrom wins it.”
n AL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR:
Maybe the toughest award to dissect,
because one of the top candidates was
a two-way player for a while. How much
of a boost does Ohtani get for the 10
starts he made on the mound before his
elbow injury put pitching on hold? The
Japanese star went 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA
and 63 strikeouts in 51 2/3 innings. Not to
mention he batted .285 with 22 homers,
61 RBIs, 10 stolen bases and a .925 OPS
in 367 plate appearances as a designat-
ed hitter. Pretty much unprecedented.
Meanwhile, the steady Andujar hit
.297 with 27 homers, 92 RBIs and an
.855 OPS in 149 games as the everyday
third baseman for a Yankees team that
made the playoffs. Hard to compare.
Ohtani wasn’t on the field all that
much, but hey, it’s not an MVP award.
Picking him seems more fun.
n NL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR:
Another close call. The impressive num-
bers for 20-year-old Atlanta outfielder
Ronald Acuna Jr. and 19-year-old Wash-
ington slugger Juan Soto are remarkably
similar. Acuna earns a slight edge for his
speed and defense. “For me, just seeing
Acuna straight up, I think he had a bigger
impact on that club,” Mattingly said.
n AL MANAGER OF THE YEAR:
So difficult to choose between Oakland’s
Bob Melvin and Tampa Bay’s Kevin
Cash. They both did a masterful job
despite a low payroll and little starting
pitching. Melvin piloted the Athletics (97-
65) to a surprise playoff berth, while the
Rays somehow went 90-72 in a division
that included the Red Sox and Yankees.
Take a look at the two rosters, though.
And while the A’s were adding help at the
trade deadline, Tampa Bay was selling
off veterans. So by the slimmest of mar-
gins, it’s Cash.
n NL MANAGER OF THE YEAR:
Craig Counsell was our pick from a com-
petitive field last year, even though Mil-
waukee fell short of the playoffs. He re-
ceived three first-place votes but came in
fourth. Often overlooked, Counsell gets
the nod this time after the Brewers won
their final eight regular-season games
to finish 96-67 and overtake the favored
Cubs in the NL Central. A close second
is Brian Snitker, the 62-year-old skipper
who did a wonderful job in guiding the
Baby Braves to a surprise NL East title.

“I think we have definitely ex-
ceeded some of our expectations,”
said Barker, who is the team’s lead-
ing goal scorer. “We just went into
this season really determined and
positive and ready to exceed those
expectations.”
The winner of the game will
play Thursday at a time and a site
to be determined. The MAIS web-
site lists Monday as the date for all
three of the division championship
games.
Barker said it is “surreal” to be
part of a team in which everyone is
making their first playoff appear-
ances. Acker agreed and said the
run to the postseason has been ex-
citing and has set the bar higher for
future classes.
Sophomores Carly Rogers and
Kelly Bell will be part of that future.
Barker and Acker are the team’s
only seniors, so all of the Lady Pa-
triots believe this season is a start-
ing point to build a championship
tradition.
“Everybody was really deter-
mined to go into this season and
starting to accomplish our goals,”
Rogers said. “Now that we are No.
1 in the district, I think everybody
is really focused and ready for this
week. We also are really excited
and a little nervous.”
Rogers and Bell are part of a
core group of seven sophomores.
Bell said it will be important for the
Lady Patriots not to get distracted
about the road ahead or to get too
caught up in what they did in the
regular season.
Heritage Academy coach Tom
Velek shared in the optimism at the
beginning of the season. In fact, he
felt the team had a good chance to
win the district title and to go on
to play for a state title. He said the
Lady Patriots have received contri-
butions from numerous individuals
en route to a championship finish in
the first part of the campaign. All of
that, though, won’t matter in what
he hopes is a three-part second seg-
ment to the season.
“They call it the postseason for
a reason because it is a new sea-
son,” Velek said. “I am not trying to
sound like some old, wise sage, but
I have been in enough state tourna-
ments and district tournament that
often it is not the player or the team
with the better record, it is the team
that is mentally and physically pre-
pared and focused and ready to play
that day.”
Velek likes the fact Heritage
Academy will have a chance to play
at home again Thursday if it takes
cares of business Tuesday. He said
there will be plenty of distractions
this week — nine-weeks testing
and a home football game Friday —
that could test the team’s focus, but
he believes the Lady Patriots have
learned from their disappointments
in previous seasons and built confi-
dence in their title run this season.
He hopes all of that will come out
Tuesday and help Heritage Acade-
my extend its season.
“Two years ago when I started
we were 4-8,” Velek said. “I think in
the article Haley Marie Fisackerly
back then people thought we were
a joke. I still have that article. Last
year, we were 5-2 and this year we
are 10-2 and nobody thinks we are
a joke anymore. It is gratifying.
They have bought in. I have videos
of them dead-lifting in the middle
of the summer, doing spring work
in the middle of the summer, and I
think we work harder than any oth-
er team out there.”

wallowing through sever-
al seasons of mediocrity,
the Rangers have done
their part.
EMCC has won 10 of
12 series meetings under
Buddy Stephens. Much
has changed, though,
since five years ago
when EMCC won 79-7 in
Senatobia. The following
year was again at Bobby
Franklin Field and saw
EMCC win 49-0.
The gap has since
closed considerably.
EMCC beat the 2015
national champion North-
west Mississippi C.C.
49-16. In 2016, two games
were played in Scooba,
with EMCC winning 51-
32 in the regular season
and 38-30 in the state
championship game.
It is debatable where
this group of Lions is
more vulnerable than
EMCC’s undefeated
national championship
squads in 2013 and
2014, or if other MACJC
programs are recruiting
better.
There is little doubt
EMCC remains the gold
standard. Whether they
admit it or not, everyone
wants to be like them.
A week ago, EMCC
beat No. 20 East Central
C.C. 24-21 in Decatur.
One would have to go
back to 2016 — when
EMCC beat Itawamba
C.C. 44-42 in Fulton — to
find the last time EMCC
won by three points or
less in regular-season
play.
Typically, the Lions
react with disdain to
close calls. They expect
perfection, so allowing
anyone to play a tight
game is typically cause
for concern. However, the
team’s locker room was
different after the victory
against ECCC.
There was an acknowl-
edgment of ECCC. The
Warriors have a talented
front four that made it
tough for the Lions to
put anything together on
offense.
Northwest Mississippi
C.C. also had a similar
scare, beating ECCC 28-
24 in the regular-season
opener.
This week, EMCC is
in the unusual position
of being taxed in back-
to-back weeks. Last year,
it was clear Northwest
Mississippi C.C. was
