Receiver Circuit Design

We propose that you buy the Frequency Modulator (FM) receiver, preferably HRC 733-G. The
datasheet for this has been appended with this document. This receiver uses the IC CXA1619BS.
There is Band Pass Filter (BPF) connected across the pins 13 and 14. It is a L-C BPF as you can see
on the PCB that you buy. The other end of the BPF is to be connected to the antenna. You need to
connect this point as shown in fig, to the wire coming from the coaxial connector. (This is a normal
single strand wire and keep it as short as possible.). Normally the receiver comes with a wire
connected to PCB (probably green). You need to connect the other end to the coax connector.

There will be a set of 3 wires (red, yellow and black). You need to connect a 10K or 22K
potentiometer across it. These wires also come soldered to the PCB. This pot is meant for volume
control.

For power supply, you have 2 wires connected to PCB (red and black). You need to get a regulated
6V DC supply for this. Hence we suggest the use of a 7805 regulator IC. The input to 7805 can be
from a 9V DC cell.

There are 2 wires white and blue meant for audio signal. You need to connect these to an 8Ω
speaker or to a earphone.

Once you do this and your antenna is ready, you should be able to get the Commercial FM signal
from your city's FM station. You can tune easily using the knob available on the receiver set. You
should be able to get the signal clearly. You will not get the directionality in this case since the
power level of transmitted signal is high.

Now, to change the frequency from commercial FM to 144.5MHz.

We have made the following changes in HRC 733-G and it works. For other sets, you may have to
change something else.
• Capacitor C3 is connected across pins 8 and 9 and across inductance L3. Remove it.
• Capacitor C2 is connected across pins 9 and 10 and across inductance L2. Remove it.
• You may also need to lengthen (stretch) the inductor of the bandpass filter slightly.

Testing the final setup before coming to the event is important. If you have any ham in your college,
he will have a FM transmitter and he can transmit at 144.5 MHz and you can test the antenna
directionality also.

Otherwise, make sure your set up works for the commercial FM and then make the required
changes as mentioned. You will have to rely upon testing your circuit just before hunting begins.
