Course No. : TEE-701
Course Title: Power Station Practice
Instructor-in-Charge: Mr. Ashutosh Bhatt

Course Description:
Electricity is modern society’s most convenient and useful form of energy. The subject matter is divided
into 5 chapters covering duly-recognized areas of theory and study.

Unit 1:
This unit starts with Introduction to global energy scenario & Non-Conventional Energy Sources
Importance of electrical energy, comparison with forms of energy, global energy scenario, and ends with
Introduction to Solar energy, geo-thermal energy, tidal energy, wind energy, bio-gas energy and M.H.D.
Power generation.

Unit 2:
This unit starts with Thermal Power Plant, Location and Site selection, general layout and working of
plant, brief description of boilers, economizers, super heaters, draft equipments, fuel and ash handling
plant and ends with Gas Turbine Power Plant,Lay out, Working and components of gas turbine power
plant, combined gas and steam turbine plant.

Unit 3:
This unit deals with Hydro Electric Plant, Location and site selection, general layout and operation of
plant, Impulse, Reaction, Francis and Kaplan turbines, governing of turbines, Diesel Power Plant, Layout
and components of plant auxiliary equipments and ends with Nuclear Power Plant, Location and site
selection, general layout and operation of plant, brief description of reactors, moderators and reflectors.

Unit 4:
This unit deals with Types of substations, bus-bar arrangements, typical layout of substations, substation
equipments.

Unit 5:
This unit deals with Load curve, load duration curve, factors affecting cost of generation, tariffs,
depreciation, effect of low power factor and its improvement

Scope and Objective of the Course:

The objective is to instill confidence and understanding of those concepts of generation of electric power,
the coverage however is quite comprehensive and spans a wide range of topics commonly encountered in
power generation. In this regard, student after the completion of the course should be able to know about
different source of Conventional and Non-Conventional energy resource, tariffs used in India, indoor and
outdoor substation equipment.
