Open legend commemorated
W A headstone for legend of the Open, Jamie Anderson, has been added
to his grave 113 years after his death. Anderson won golf’s oldest major
three times in a row from 1877 but died in a poorhouse in 1905. Historian
Roger McStravick raised over £2,000 towards the headstone, while The
Royal and Ancient GC also made a significant contribution.

Horschel: I’m a hard grader
W In this day of seemingly endless self-promotion, you’ve got to tip your cap to
Billy Horschel. The American chose to play at a ‘lesser’ PGA Tour event the same
week of the Open and was brutally honest when asked by a hack to grade his
career to this point. “C+,” he said. “I lack that consistency compared to the top
guys. I’m a hard grader. You would not want me as your teacher.”

Volcanic eruption destroys resort
W Dye Designs, the company that designed La Reunion Golf Resort, which
was recently destroyed by Guatemala’s Fuego volcano, have said they’re
heartbroken at the loss. “To see it lost, and to see the amazing people who
helped us build and run the resort facing such a tragedy is devastating. The
resort employed over 200 people, many of whom have lost everything.”

GOT IT RIGHT
• Vernon Kay got a gig with US
network Golf Channel and, before
you roll your eyes, he was bloody
brilliant. His hilarious look at the
town of Carnoustie was worth
his fee alone (you can check it
out on their Facebook page).
The Golf Channel led the way in
terms of bringing a new slant to
the Open and brought in Conor
Moore, the impressionist who
made his name on Twitter. Their
coverage was brilliant and sadly
only available in small quantities
via social.
ƥ³À®È³ïËÀÃƜó

GOT IT WRONG
• Thanks to the BBC’s almost
complete ignorance of golf these
days, it should be no surprise
that their take on the Open was
out-of-date and, at best, cringe-
worthy. BBC radio described
ůŲưâvÀư³¨¨á:³À®vÃv®

John Inverdale was his usual
condescending, annoying self.
Just not good enough.

but it’s a bit dull.

Fixing the parts that make up that trio

The best putters have always

doesn’t exist anymore, in my opinion.

5 PUTTING TIPS
MY SIMPLE TIPS TO HELP YOU GET THE BALL IN THE HOLE
DO THIS This is a tip I’ve been using for years to correct how people grip the putter.
1 The dot on the base of the palm of your hand should be covered by the top of the putter. When that
doesn’t happen, you create leverage between the shaft and forearm. That’s great for when you need
power, like with a driver, but you don’t need to create power when putting. So, instead, hide that
dot by placing the grip in the lifelines of your hand, which massively reduces manipulation of the
GRIP IT clubface. There’s less leverage in your stroke now because you’ve removed that source of power.
GRIP IN THE PALM, WHY IT WORKS It feels as though your hands are locked in. When you look down, you’ll feel as
though your shaft is much more upright, making it easier to concentrate on taking the putter
NOT FINGERS back and through. When you get into that position, you might feel as though the club is a little
bit more off the ground, perhaps a little more toe down, as your shaft angle is a bit more up.
twitter.com/bunkeredonline 89
LESSONS HOLE OUT | STEVE JOHNSTON
Once you’ve got the right lines all you
need to really do is rock your shoulders.
DO THIS Once you’ve adopted your new grip, you’ll also create a new upright
2 shaft angle, something all good (and consistent) putters display. It’s much
more of a vertical plane than an angled plane. You should see a straight
line going right down from the right elbow, down the forearm, down the
shaft of the putter and into the sweetspot of your putterface.
BETTER SET-UP
WHY IT WORKS Once you are in this position – which you will fall into very naturally
ADOPT THE if you adopt the new grip – all you need to do now is use your shoulders.
Just think about trying to keep your head and knees still and let your shoulders do
RIGHT LINES the job. There’s no leverage in there, no manipulation whatsoever – all you’ve done is
set yourself up nicely to allow you to just rock your shoulders through the stroke.
90 bunkered.co.uk
Always make sure that your shoulders
are square to your intended target.
DO THIS Your shoulders are going to dictate your swing path, so don’t worry too much about
3 getting your feet on-line with your target. Your path will be dictated by where your shoulders
aim. If your shoulders are aiming to the right, you’re going to swing a bit in-to-out, but if
they aim left there’s a chance you’ll swing a little out-to-in. So, because of that, one of the
best tips for putting is to always make sure your shoulders are on the line of your target.
YOUR AIM
WHY IT WORKS The bottom half when putting isn’t really that important. You’re not
AIM WITH YOUR moving much, just the top half of your body. So once you’ve got these fundamentals
in place and your shoulders in line, if your bottom half is aiming just a touch left,

twitter.com/bunkeredonline 91
LESSONS HOLE OUT | STEVE JOHNSTON
Don’t try to ‘lock in’ your whole body -
just keep your knees and head still.
DO THIS Now that you’ve made a few changes, try your best to relax into position. I always tell
4 people to try and feel as though they’re ‘sitting’ into the position with still knees and a still head.
*v¨ÜvâÃï®ÈvȽ³½¨ƜÜ®ÈâܳÀ§³®ÈÀ½ËÈÈ®ƜÈÀâv®¨vÃȳËÈâ®È³
lock their whole body. You don’t need to lock your shoulders, arms, thighs, head, and desperately
try to stay in that position. All you need to be aware of in terms of movement is creating as little
RELAX head and leg movement as possible. Everything else is entirely natural.
KEEP YOUR KNEES WHY IT WORKS On long putts, I see a lot of guys bring their right knee forward, trying to turn
their whole body through. But that’s not the case. If you’ve got the clubhead more upright and
AND HEAD STILL the knees nice and still, the shoulders will do the job for you. Just try and keep your bottom half
relaxed and your head relaxed and you’ll be much better off.

CLASSIC EQUIPMENT
REVISITED
TRULY UNIQUE ROGER CLEVELAND is one of the most revered names in golf club design
history and has been responsible for the creation of some of the game’s most
iconic pieces of equipment. One set of irons that he would perhaps rather not
Cleveland have attached to his name however, are the unusual VAS irons.
Released in 1994,The VAS (Vibration Absorbing System) irons’ key technology
was the large purple badge in the cavity. This VAS system was invented by
Golf 792 VAS Cleveland’s parent company at the time, Rossingol, and was initially developed to
reduce vibration in skis. The badge was designed to give a more solid and precise
feel, while also reducing unwanted vibrations by up to 30%.
It wasn’t just the big purple badge, however, that really made these irons stand
irons out from the crowd. The unique teardrop-shaped head was huge compared to
most conventional irons at the time, while the inset hosel created an appearance
at address that was certain to stun anyone who picked up the clubs.
The unique irons Corey Pavin Only one PGA Tour player decided to put these irons into the bag, Corey Pavin.
Despite his initial reservations about the quirky irons, Pavin would go on to win

UCH IS the usual unpredictability of
Scotland, by the time you read this we
may have reverted back to a ‘typical’
Scottish summer, which generally
involves wind, rain and a bit of smattering of
sunshine thrown in there.
But if that’s the case, it sure was good while
it lasted, right? The UK enjoyed its sunniest and
warmest May on record and that was followed
up in June, where Glasgow enjoyed its hottest
day on record on June 28 with a temperature of
31.9 degrees. Did somebody say ‘taps aff’?
But this sustained hot and dry spell of Gullane, 2015
weather has had its impact on the country’s
golf courses, with the fairways of many courses
turning from lush green to a baked brown.
“We haven’t seen anything like this for a
decade,” said Shiskine GC secretary Pietre
Johnston. “It’s been such a prolonged spell and
everything is so burnt. But everybody is loving
it. We have a lot of visiting members and some
have never seen it play like this before, so it’s
providing a different challenge altogether.”
It provided a completely different test at the
Scottish Open, too. Just look at the difference
in the colour of the fairways at Gullane from
2015 to 2018… Gullane, 2018

PGA Tour pro hires caddie…via Twitter!
W After missing the cut in 35 of his last 37 events, Steven Bowditch – a winner
on the PGA Tour as recently as 2015 – decided a change was needed. So, he
took to Twitter to find a caddie for the John Deere Classic. The tweet brought
in almost 200 replies, with the gig going to a guy called Elias. So, how did they
get on? Well, unfortunately it was another missed cut for the Aussie.
