AEROFOIL
Objective:-
› To get familiar with Fluid flow (fluent) analysis system in ANSYS Workbench
› To determine the drag, lift and pressure distribution over an aerofoil.
Tools Required:-
Software:-ANSYS workbench, SolidWorks, MS Word.
Hardware:-Good performing computer
Procedure:-
› An arbitrary aerofoil is designed using SolidWorks software.
Dimension of the aerofoil
o Length (leading to trailing edge): 27.76cm
o Span wise width: 20cm
o Maximum camber: 6cm
› The IGS format of the geometry is imported into the fluid flow (fluent) analysis system
› An uniform enclosure (surrounding) is created around the aerofoil
› The air enclosed within the aerofoil by default is subtracted from the surrounding by using
Boolean function
› The inlet and outlet are named before meshing (fine)
› The type of flow, boundary conditions and other parameters are set in the setup module
› The velocity of the laminar flow through the inlet is set at 133 m/s
› The number of iterations are set and the calculations are made (300 iterations)
› Simulation results are obtained in the form of graphs and animations and thus the required
values of drag, lift, and static pressure distribution over an aerofoil can be obtained.
Observations:-
Animations
Result:-
Considering the inlet velocity as 133 m/s we obtain
› Drag along X direction: 12.67 N
› Lift along Y direction: 5.54 N
Thus the fluid flow (fluent) analysis is performed over an aerofoil and various experimental values are
obtained by simulations.
Note: - As the length of the wing is considered to be small and the flow is considered to be laminar for
simplicity, we are obtaining a small amount of lift.
