that accuracy from the tee counts
more than length. There are several
elements of danger here, none more
so than on the tenth hole with its two
nests of fairway bunkers.
The New Course, meanwhile, is
one year younger. Like its sibling,
it is a tight layout with quite a bit

the opening hole, where the fairway
seems unbelievably narrow from the

married to his long-term partner Francie Harris, with all of the crew in attendance.
2. They say dog is a man’s best friend, and that’s certainly the case for Ian Poulter. The car-loving
Ryder Cup hero couldn’t even hop on his treatment table without his hairy pal jumping up to join
him. The dog’s name? Bentley. Of course it is.
3. Paul Casey’s caddie, John McLaren, is one of the game’s most recognisable loopers due to
his frequent shorts and long socks combo. At the Players Championship, he wore socks with the
famous par-3 17th hole on. That’s pretty cool.

help to bring people through our gates and experience all the club has to offer,” said

RON PLAY is a major part of everybody’s golf
game. Hitting greens with them makes for a
comfortable round; hitting them close makes
for a great round; missing greens with them
soon becomes frustrating.
Now that the season is well and truly underway,
I am pretty sure you have already thought about
your first few rounds and have started to practice
and work on certain areas of your game. The
chances are that you’ve already done some work
with your irons.
General improvements to your iron play can be
done really quickly and without the need for major
swing changes at this stage of the season. Save
that for the off-season. When I’m playing, I like
to work to a 10% margin for error with my irons.
That means, if I am 100 yards away, I give myself a
10-yard perimeter around the target, 150 yards =
15-yard perimeter, and so on. This not only focuses
my attention to a very specific target area but
allows me to judge whether or not a flag is in good
position to go for it, or whether the middle of the
green would be the better option.
As you know, golf’s never that easy and can’t be
bracketed into exact parameters like this, but the
journey of golf is to always try and improve and,
to do that, you need to measure and monitor your
performance. Your scorecard or handicap often flies to your target is irrelevant. What matters is it gets there. So, embrace

What followed that has justifiably taken
its place in folklore as one of the great Open

The hole was later renamed ‘Hogan’s Alley’ in
recognition of his bold, aggressive play.
By the 13th, he had established a two-

his win was virtually assured. Another birdie

That stunning 68 also gave him a

THE SCOTTISH OPEN JULY 12-15
Double

C
AST YOUR MIND BACK to 2015. It was the first time
Gullane and, more widely, East Lothian, had hosted
the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open
and, with Matt Kuchar having set the clubhouse target
at 11-under-par, all the pressure was on Rickie Fowler.
Fowler, playing in the penultimate group, showed nerves of
steel, birdieing three of the last four holes to pip his Ryder Cup
teammate by one shot for his maiden European Tour title.
Three years on, the event returns to Gullane and, with both
Americans playing, Mr Kuchar wants redemption.
“I’ve had a good run at the Scottish Open in recent years,”
said the 39-year-old, who finished fourth at Dundonald Links
last year before falling agonisingly short in the Open at Royal
Birkdale. “I had a go when I lost to Rickie, I had a nice finish last
year and my Open performances have improved as a result.”
Naturally, Fowler concurs about the benefits of playing in
the event. “It’s good preparation for the Open, as you often
see guys who have played the Scottish do well the next week.”
They’re right. The event’s pre-Open slot and links style course
makes it the perfect tune-up, with six of the last eight Claret
Jug winners having competed in the Scottish Open.
One of those, Phil Mickelson, missed Dundonald Links last
year and regretted it after missing the cut at the Open. “I think
playing a week before at the Scottish is very helpful and it may
have made a difference,” he said. Mickelson, at the time of print,
was ‘50/50’ on whether he’d be at Gullane.
But regardless of whether ‘Lefty’ tees it up or not, the field
will be stacked. In fact, the event outshone all other Rolex
Series events on the European Tour last year – only trailing
behind the four majors and WGCs.

A ground-breaking agreement saw the Ladies

The field almost doubled from 80 to 156 and it became the

As a result, an influx of stars teed it up in Ayrshire. None were
more recognisable than 2014 US Women’s Open champion

Scottish Open so much she couldn’t wait to return.

The ability to control your

back in your stance than
normal. Your weight then
has to go further forward
and your swing needs to be
shorter and a little slower.
When you’re hitting into the
wind, in particular, any speed
will make it spin, so keep the
speed down to take the spin
off. Similarly, as soon as you
get any weight on your right
side, the ball is just going to
fly up in the air. So, get your
weight on the left, get your
hands ahead, grip slightly
further down the shaft, and
swing easy. Take more club,
too. How much more varies
depending on the conditions
but I’d usually just take one
more – sometimes two – and
just try to ease it in there.
The softer, the better.

being slightly back in your stance,
it means you hit the ball and turf
together. That’s the contact you’re
looking for. Most people have the
ball too far forward and they end
up hitting behind it and to get to
the ball the club has to pass the
hands. So, when they don’t pass
the hands, they duff it and when
they do pass the hands, they thin
it. So, ball back, hands ahead,
no wrist break, keep the hands
ahead, deliver a slight descending
blow and hit ball and turf together.

WHEN TO COME
The month of April gets nice in
Prague and the golfing season

enjoy golf there until mid-October.
WHERE TO STAY
The Imperial Hotel Karlovy Vary

while the Dutch Pub and La

GETTING THERE
Prague is easy to get to from
Scotland and the rest of the UK.
There are direct, low-cost flights
from either Edinburgh or Glasgow
(easyJet, Jet2 and Ryanair at
around £100 return plus the

No, this is true. An Oregon resort is now offering the chance to play
golf with a caddie goat that loyally follows you through the course. The
experience is being offered at Silvies Valley Ranch, a 150,000-acre resort
