Leadership and Team Building

Midterm Assignment
Hugo Andres Porras Quintero

I was born on August 8, 1995 in Monterrey, Mexico.

I am the first child of a family consisting of 5 members, my father of 52 years, my mother

of 49 years, my brother of 20 and my sister 12.

I grew up in a family environment. All my life, from kindergarten to high school, I was in
a Catholic environment, which marked my way of thinking about religion and my values.

I am currently studying the career of Chemical Engineer in the Monterrey Institute of

Technology and Higher Education, and I am in my fourth year.

The education that my parents have given me, along with what I learned in the Liceo de
Monterrey school, conform my main values and principles, which are honesty, respect,
justice, kindness, and simplicity.

As for my short-term mission, I want to train as a successful professional in my field, which

is chemical engineering, and upon graduating, I want to conclude an MBA.

Another of my plans is to get a job at P & G, as a consultant, and start saving and investing,
to grow my capital.

My long-term vision is to start a family and live in my hometown, Monterrey Mexico, and
have my own company.

Within my plans is also to form myself spiritually, to continue with an inner peace and to
be able to transmit it to my loved ones. Also enter personal development courses, in order
to grow as a person.

From my point of view, leadership is a fundamental aspect so that a person can succeed in
life.
Human relationships always consist of a complex web of power, hierarchy and domination
and that is why today one of the most important and effective ways to make a link between
individuals work is that of leadership.

When we talk about leadership, we are referring to people who permanently or temporarily
occupy the role of leader, who directs the destinies of others with the idea of the common
good or at least achieve a previously established goal.

Although the idea of leadership is mostly related to the field of work, reality shows us that
the importance of leadership can be made visible in a multitude of situations and links: in
friendship groups, in the family, in educational environments, etc.

In today's workplace, the figure of the leader is essential to carry out different types of
projects that can give good results. This is because a good leader can guide a group much
better than if each person worked alone or independently.

These are the reasons why I consider it important to be a good leader in the aspects
mentioned above.

To see how other people see me, I made the 360 feedback, in which I asked 13 loved ones,
including family and friends, questions about how they see and what they think about my
leadership qualities.

After analyzing the results of the 360 feedback, I concluded that my loved ones and people
I value consider that I am relatively good at keeping track of my colleagues' performance,
and that I can successfully encourage the exchange of information with other people.

I was surprised to learn that, according to the interviewees, I am considerably good at

making and managing teams, and managing interpersonal relationships effectively, by
listening to others and giving them correct feedback, as well as communicating a clear
vision of the future and the search for improve what the team has done, and motivate them
in a positive way.

On the other hand, I could see that where I was least favored was in the help given to others,
in promoting competitiveness and ambition in a positive way, in seeking excellence and
relationship with customers, and helping and clarifying what is expected of others.
Thanks to the 360 feedback, I managed to realize that indeed, in the areas mentioned above
I could improve, and I recognize it by not having realized until now that they let me know.

After analyzing my 360 feedback and various theories on leadership, such as the Bernard
M. Bass theory, I realized that the physical characteristics that define a leader are its energy
and its physical stamina, so I think it could improve in that aspect, by not always having a
lot of energy. To improve this point mentioned above, I will start doing sports, since
according to studies at Harvard University, people who perform physical activities during
the day tend to have a better energy and physical stamina.

Regarding the personality of a leader, I believe that I have an acceptable self-confidence,

along with honesty and integrity, but it could improve my enthusiasm and desire to lead,
and I could do so by engaging in extracurricular activities that demand my leadership,
which I'm excited.

About the characteristics that a leader should have at work, I consider that I do not always
look for excellence in my work, and I am not aware of the search for my goals, so I could
propose specific and measurable goals to know how I am going and if I have done it.

In terms of intelligence and ability, I consider myself an intelligent person with skills and
knowledge, capable of making a judgment, and with social characteristics to relate
interpersonally.

When I analyzed Kingsley's onion, I realized that my values directly affect my behavior. I
consider that my main values are honesty, respect, justice, kindness and simplicity. These
values directly affect how I see the external things that happen to me, and consequently,
how I react.

While performing the Kingsley pyramid, I was able to realize that I consider my family
very important, but I am not dedicating the time that I would like to dedicate to them in
order to grow our relationship and trust. To improve this situation, upon returning to
Mexico, I will designate a time each week to spend with my parents, siblings, uncles and
grandparents.

I could also realize that the professional aspect in my life has a great base, but in the same
way, I do not dedicate the adequate time to perfect my aptitudes and qualities that will
make me a better professional. My goal is to develop the necessary skills to be a successful
entrepreneur, and I will achieve it through dedication and effort, being aware that every act
and action I take have a consequence that directly affect my future.

I also worry about the base of my pyramid designated for health, since I do not sleep the
necessary 7 hours, which directly affects my daily performance and affects the other bases
of my pyramid. To achieve my goal of sleeping the necessary hours, I will make a schedule
of my daily activities, and I will fulfill it to the letter so as not to have pending activities at
night that prevent me from having the necessary hours of sleep to be able to perform
correctly.
