SABBATH SCHOOL LESSONS

II EPH ESIANSII

The marble street in Ephesus stands as a reminder of bygone days of

splendor. Monuments, fountains, and marble benches once lined the street.
The Apostle Paul ministered in Ephesus for two years and three months.

Thirteenth Sabbath Offering

By 1962, three families with a total of six members had located in

the Los Angeles area with the purpose to witness for the Lord. Later, a
colporteur brother working in the area accepted the call to work part-
time as a Bible worker. When the little group had grown he was
ordained as an elder. At the time the Southwest U.S. Field was formed
lin 1969, the Los Angeles church was the nucleus. From the original six
.members, .the regular Sabbath School attendance is now over one
hundred each week. The members are active including the children,
and distribute literature with success.
In the Los Angeles area and nearby, there are large concentrations of
Seventh-day Adventists and the bold listings of our name in the
telephone directories bring more inquiries than anywhere else. As the
torch of the Present Truth has been kindled in this city, the time has
come to establish a memorial for the Lord. A church building is
needed and will be a physical witness at all times. "Special light has
been given me regarding the character and magnitude of the work to
be done in Los Angeles. Several times messages have been given
regarding the duty that rests upon us of proclaiming the third angel's
message with power in that city." -Evangelism, p. 406.
Southwest U.S. Field includes not only Southern California and Los
Angeles, but also the states of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. These
are all contiguous with the Mexican border and have large con-
centrations of souls with Spanish as their mother tongue. Over a
million of them live in Los Angeles, and with their compatriots south
of the border, look to this Field for the Bread of Life.
Almost from the beginning the believers in Los Angeles established
a building fund in order to have their own church. One of the brethren
donated a lot on which to build. Negotiations with the city for the
necessary permits are proceeding, but a problem arises from the need
to have it large enough for the congregation, on the lot that they
already have.
Los Angeles ranks as the ninth most populous area in the world,
there being over 10 million Angelinos in 469 sq. miles (1202 sq. kms.)
so the expenses to build are very high. For this reason, they are appeal-

FOREWORD
"Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon,
clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners." Solomon's
Song 6:10.

The time is fast approaching when the realization of this text will
be fulfilled. Christ will have a perfect church on earth when He comes,
a church that will reflect His image fully; a church without fault or
blemish; a church that represents faithfully to the world and the uni-
verse, the result of the gospel message in its fullness. It must be a
church of overcomers, who have the faith of Jesus, the very faith that
gave Him the victory in all things.

The apostle Paul had this in mind when he wrote the epistle to the
Ephesian believers who lived in a city notorious for its corruption and
immorality, yet even these that had been purified by the gospel and
who still had to live in the same environment, were expected to go on
to perfection. "Ephesians" should be of special interest to every Bible
student living in this time when the world is rapidly approaching the
same condition-even that of Sodom and Gomorrah. " ... We should
all study carefully the instruction given in Corinthians and Ephesians
regarding our relation to one another as members of the body of
Christ."-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 500.
The remnant church of the last period must be perfect. For this
reason, this series of lessons has been prepared to bring attention and
study to this epistle. This series should not be considered exhaustive
but should serve to arouse a desire to understand more fully the
valuable counsel given. All need to learn from Christ personally how to
attain to the perfection and the full measure of His likeness.

It should be the goal of every student in the Sabbath School to un-

derstand and experience how they may have the righteousness-right-
doing-that the grace of Christ makes possible. The message of 1888
must be translated into a practical reality. The mind of Christ must be
in every member and His Spirit must guide the believers in all things.
"Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." Philippians
2:5.

DIVINE PREDESTINATION

KEY TEXT: "That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might

gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in
heaven, and which are on earth; even in him." Ephesians 1:10.
Background to the Epistle o Sunday
March 27
1. When Paul visited Ephesus, a celebrated city in Asia Minor, how
many believers did he find? Acts 19:1,7.

When Paul came to Ephesus in A.D. 54, he began teaching in the Jewish
synagogue. Several converts to the faith of the gospel received the baptism of
the Holy Spirit and the miraculous gift of tongues and prophecy. Later, he
preached and instructed in the school of Tyrannus.

2. What was the name of the goddess worshipped at Ephesus, and how
benighted and superstitious were these people? Acts 19:23-28.

" ... Ephesus was not only the most magnificent, but the most corrupt, of
the cities of Asia. Superstition and sensual pleasure held sway over her teem-
ing population. Under the shadow of her temples, criminals of every grade
found shelter, and the most degrading vices flourished." -The Acts of the
Apostles, p. 286.

Transformation Through the Gospel o Monday

March 28
3. What did Paul see in the city? 1 Corinthians 16:8, 9.

" ... Sorcery had been prohibited by the Mosaic law, on pain of death,
yet from time to time it had been secretly practiced by apostate Jews. At the
time of Paul's visit to Ephesus there were in the city 'certain of the vagabond
Jews, exorcists,' _.. " -The Acts of the Apostles, p. 287. -

4. What resulted from the sowing of the gospel seed in the great city of
Ephesus? Ephesians 2:1, 5, 6.

"With deep interest and grateful, wondering joy the brethren listened to
Paul's words. By faith they grasped the wonderful truth of Christ's atoning
sacrifice and received Him as their Redeemer. They were then baptized in the
name of Jesus, and as Paul 'laid his hands upon them,' they received also the
baptism of the Holy Spirit, by which they were enabled to speak the languages

-5-
of other nations and to prophesy. Thus they were qualified to labor as mis-
sionaries in Ephesus and its vicinity and also to go forth to proclaim the gospel
in Asia Minor." -The Acts of the Apostles, p. 283.

Blessings Received D Tuesday

March 29
5. Later when writing to the Ephesians for what did the apostle first of
all give thanks? Ephesians 1:3.

"Nothing tends more to promote health of body and of soul than does a
spirit of gratitude and praise." -The Ministry of Healing, p.251.
" ... No tongue can express, no finite mind can conceive, the blessing
that results from appreciating the goodness and love of God. Even on earth we
may have joy as a wellspring, never failing, because fed by the streams that
flow from the throne of God.
"Then let us educate our hearts and lips to speak the praise of God for His
matchless love...." -Ibid., p.253.

6. What should we also cultivate? Psalm 118:1,2; Psalm 92:1, 2.

" ... Like the Hebrew host, we should praise the Lord with heart and soul
and voice for His 'wonderful works to the children of men.' Those who dwell
upon God's great mercies, and are not unmindful of His lesser gifts, will put on
the girdle of gladness and make melody in their hearts to the Lord. The daily
blessings that we receive from the hand of God, and above all else the death of
Jesus to bring happiness and heaven within our reach, should be a theme for
constant gratitude... ." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 289.

Divine Predestination D Wednesday

March 30
7. How does Paul explain the great truth of predestination? Ephesians
1:4-6; Romans 8:29, 30.

" ... 'The grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men. '
'This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; who will have all
men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one
God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; who
gave Himself a ransom for all.' Titus 2:11; 1 Timothy 2:3-6. The Spirit of God
is freely bestowed to enable every man to lay hold upon the means of
salvation. Thus Christ, 'the true Light,' 'lighteth every man that cometh into
the world.' Jolin 1:9. Men fail of salvation through their own willful refusal of
the gift of life." -The Great Controversy, pp. 261, 262.

8. What plan reveals just how comprehensive God's purposes are in this
matter? What has never been God's intention? John 3:16; 12:47 (last
part); 2 Peter 3:9.

-6-
"Heaven's plan of salvation is broad enough to embrace the whole world.
God longs to breathe into prostrate humanity the breath of life. And He will not
permit any soul to be disappointed who is sincere in his longing for something
higher and nobler than anything the world can offer...." -Prophets and
Kings, pp. 377, 378.

Grace Abounding o Thursday

March 31
9. To what have all men access through the grace of Christ? Ephesians
1:7,8; Hebrews 7:25.

" ... Grace is an attribute shown to undeserving human beings. We did

not seek after it; it was sent in search of us. God rejoices to bestow grace upon
all who hunger and thirst for it, not'because we are worthy, but because we are
unworthy. Our need is the qualification which gives us the assurance that we
shall receive the gift." -Testimonies to Ministers, p.519.

10. What has God through His abundant grace made known to His
children? Ephesians 1:9, 10; John 17:22; 14:3.

"Songs of triumph mingle with the music from angel harps, till heaven
seems to overflow with joy and praise. Love has conquered. The lost is found.
Heaven rings with voices in lofty strains proclaiming, 'Blessing, and honor,
and glory, and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the
Lamb forever and ever.' Revelation 5:13.
"From that scene of heavenly joy, there comes back to us on earth the
echo of Christ's own wonderful words, 'I ascend unto My Father, and your
Father; and to My Gpd, and your God.' John 20:17. The family of heaven and
the family of earth are one. For us our Lord ascended, and for us He lives... ."
-The Desire of Ages, p.835. .

us? Ephesians 1:11, 12.

"In view of the glorious inheritance that may be his, 'what shall a man
give in exchange for his soul?' Matthew 16:26. He may be poor, yet he
possesses in himself a wealth and dignity that the world could never bestow.
The soul redeemed and cleansed from sin, with all its noble powers dedicated
to the service of God, is of surpassing worth; and there is joy in heaven in the
presence of God and the holy angels over one soul redeemed, a joy that is
expressed in songs of holy triumph." -Steps to Christ, p. 126.

2. After the Ephesians had accepted the gospel, what assurance was
given them? Ephesians 1:13, 14.

" ... And the apostle Paul points forward to the 'redemption of the
purchased possession.' Ephesians 1:14. God created the earth to be the abode
of holy, happy beings. The Lord 'formed the earth and made it; He hath
established it, He created it not in vain, He formed it to be inhabited.' Isaiah
45: 18. That purpose will be fulfilled, when, renewed by the power of God, and
freed from sin and sorrow, it shall become the eternal abode of the redeemed.
'The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein forever.' .. ." -
Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 67.

Paul's Burden for the Church D Monday

April 4
3. What virtues in the Ephesians caused the apostle great joy, and what
did he do continually? Ephesians 1:15, 16.

"While the sinner cannot save himself, he still has something to do to

secure salvation. 'Him that cometh to me,' says Christ, 'I will in no wise cast

-8-
out.' John 6:37. But we must come to Him; and when we repent of our sins, we
must believe that He accepts and pardons us. Faith is the gift of God, but the
power to exercise it is ours. Faith is the hand by which the soul takes hold
upon the divine offers of grace and mercy." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 431.

4. What was his fervent desire for them? Ephesians 1:17.

"He is just as willing to work with the efforts of His people now and to ac-
complish great things through weak instrumentalities. All heaven awaits our
demand upon its wisdom and strength." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 554.

Spiritual Insight D Tuesday

April 5
5. What important gift did he especially wish that they should have?
Ephesians 1:18 (first part).

" ... Understanding means obedience to God's commandments. The

Scriptures are not to be adapted to meet the prejudice and jealousy of men.
They can be understood only by those who are humbly seeking for a knowledge
of the truth that they may obey it." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 112.

6. What would such a gift enable them to know? Ephesians 1:18 (last
part).

"And by and by the gates of heaven will be thrown open to admit God's
children, and from the lips of the King of glory the benediction will fall on
their ears like richest music, 'Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the
kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.' Matthew 25:34."
-Steps to Christ, pp. 125, 126.

Christ's Power D Wednesday

April 6
7. What were they especially to contemplate and to recognize?
Ephesians 1:19.

8. What is said of God's people and of what do they talk? Psalm

145:10, 11.

-9-
The Exaltation of Christ D Thursday
April 7
9. How has God's power especially been manifested? Ephesians 1:20.

" ... Christ declares that even now the power which gives life to the dead
is among them, and they are to behold its manifestation. This same
resurrection power is that which gives life to the soul 'dead in trespasses and
sins.' Eph. 2:1. That spirit of life in Christ Jesus, 'the power of His resurrec-
tion,' sets men 'free from the law of sin and death.' Phil. 3:10; Rom. 8:2. The
dominion of evil is broken, and through faith the soul is kept from sin. He who

10. How greatly has Christ been exalted and what has been put under His

that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and
honor, and glory, and blessing.' Rev. 5:12." -The Desire of Ages, p.834.

TRANSFORMATION

THROUGH THE GOSPEL

KEY TEXT: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of
yourselves: it is the gift of God." Ephesians 2:8.

Spiritual Death o Sunday

April 10
1. In what condition were the Ephesians before they had heard the
gospel? What took place when they received the Word? Ephesians
2:1.

"Through the same faith we may receive spiritual healing. By sin we have
been severed from the life of God. Our souls are palsied. Of ourselves we are no
more capable of living a holy life than was the impotent man capable of
walking." -The Desire of Ages, p. 203.

2. How had they walked in former times and by whom had ·they been
controlled? Ephesians 2:2.

" ... Sin originated in self-seeking. Lucifer, the covering cherub, desired
to be first in heaven. He sought to gain control of heavenly beings, to draw
them away from their Creator, and to win their homage to himself. Therefore
he misrepresented God,.· attributing to Him the desire for self-exaltation.
With his own evil characteristics he sought to invest the loving Creator. Thus
he deceived angels. Thus he deceived men. He led them to doubt the word of
God, and distrust His goodness. Because God is a God of justice and terrible
majesty, Satan caused them to look upon Him as severe and unforgiving...."
-The Desire of Ages, pp. 21, 22.

The Carnal Condition o Monday

April 11
3. In their unconverted state what had they fulfilled? Ephesians 2:3
(first part).

" ... Satan tempts men and women to disobey, with the promise that in
disobedience the)' will find liberty and freedom that will make them as gods.

-11-
There is seen a spirit of opposition to the plain word of God, of idolatrous ex-
altation of human wisdom above divine revelation...." -Prophets and
Kings, p. 178.

4. As long as they were in this state, whose children were they?

Ephesians 2:3 (last part).

Power of Divine Love o Tuesday

April 12
5. What did God's great love accomplish? Ephesians 2:4, 5.

" ... I point you to Calvary. God 'gave His only-begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.' John
3:16. Think of the Saviour's matchless love. While we were yet sinners, Christ
died to save us from eternal death... ." -Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 50.

6. By what are we saved, and how can it be defined? Ephesians 2:5 (last
part).

"Not because we first loved Him did Christ love us; but 'while we were yet
sinners' He died for us. He does not treat us according to our desert. Although
our sins have merited condemnation, He does not condemn us. Year after year
He has borne with our weakness and ignorance, with our ingratitude and
waywardness. Notwithstanding our wanderings, our hardness of heart, our
neglect of His Holy word, His hand is stretched out still.
"Grace is an attribute of God exercised toward undeserving human
beings. We did not seek for it, but it was sent in search of us. God rejoices to
bestow His grace upon us, not because we are worthy, but because we are so
utterly unworthy. Our only claim to His mercy is our great need." -The
Ministry of Healing, p. 161.

A Wonderful Privilege o Wednesday

April 13
7. What great honor is imparted to the converted soul? Ephesians 2:6.

" ... The redeemed only, of all created beings, have in their own ex-
perience known the actual conflict with sin; they have wrought with Christ,
and, as even the angels could not do, have entered into the fellowship of His
sufferings; will they have no testimony as to the science of redemption-
nothing that will be of worth to unfallen beings?" -Education, p. 308.

8. What is fully revealed by this act ofexaltation? Ephesians 2:7; Isaiah

35:2 (last part).

-12-
" ... 'They shall see the glory of the Lord, and the excellency of our God.'
Isaiah 35:2.
"Today this prophecy is meeting rapid fulfillment. The missionary ac-
tivities of the church of God on earth are bearing rich fruitage, and soon the
gospel message will have been proclaimed to all nations. 'To the praise of the
glory of His grace,' men and women from every kindred, tongue, and people
are being made 'accepted in the Beloved,' 'that in the ages to come He might
show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us through
Christ Jesus.' Ephesians 1:6; 2:7... ." -Prophets and Kings, pp. 313, 314.

Salvation, the Gift of God o Thursday

April 14
9. What is grace called and of what can we never boast? Ephesians
2:8,9.

" ... Good works can never purchase salvation, but they are an evidence
of the faith that acts by love and purifies the soul. And though the eternal
reward is not bestowed because of our merit, yet it will be in proportion to the
work that has been done through the grace of Christ." - The Desire of Ages,
p.314.

10. What is the fruit of conversion? Ephesians 2:10.

" 'By their fruits ye shall know them.' All the followers of Christ bear fruit
to His glory. Their lives testify that a good work has been wrought in them by
the Spirit of God, and their fruit is unto holiness." -Testimonies, vol. 1,
p.289.

BARRIERS BROKEN DOWN

KEY TEXT: "For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken
down the middle wall of partition between us." Ephesians
2:14.

Division of Jew and Gentile o Sunday

April 17
1. What did the Jews call themselves and what name did they give to the
Gentiles? Ephesians 2:11.

"No distinction on account of nationality, race, or caste, is recognized by

God. He' is the Maker of all mankind. All men are of one family by creation,
and all are one through redemption." -Christ's Object Lessons, p.386.

2. How does the apostle describe the condition of the Ephesians while
they were Gentiles according to the flesh? Ephesians 2:12.

"The hearts of Paul and his associate workers were drawn out in behalf of
those who were 'without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel,
and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without
God in the world.' .. ." -The Acts of the Apostles, p. 175.

Middle Wall of Partition Broken Down o Monday

April 18
3. How was their condition changed by accepting Christ? Ephesians
2:13.

" ... God desires that the receivers of His grace shall be witnesses to its
power. Those whose course has been most offensive to Him He freely accepts;
when they repent, He imparts to them His divine Spirit, places them in the
highest positions of trust, and sends them forth into the camp of the disloyal
to proclaim His boundless mercy... ." -The Desire of Ages, p.826.

4. What is Christ for both Jew and Gentile and what has He broken
down? Ephesians 2:14. '

"Christ recognized no distinction of nationality or rank or creed. The

scribes and Pharisees desired to make a local and a national benefit of all the
gifts of heaven and to exclude the rest of God's family in the 'world. But Christ
came to break down every wall of partition. '..." ~Testimonies, vol. 9; p. 190.

-14-
A bolition of Ceremonial Law o Tuesday
April 19
5. What did Christ abolish and what had come by the Jewish application
of it? Ephesians 2:15.

"God's people, whom He calls His peculiar treasure, were privileged with
a two-fold system of law; the moral and the ceremonial. The one, pointing
back to creation to keep in remembrance the living God who made the
world, ... The other, given because of man's transgression of the moral law,
the obedience to which consisted in sacrifices and offerings pointing to the
future redemption. Each is clear and distinct from the other." -The SDA
Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 6, p. 1094.
"After Christ died on the cross as a sin offering the ceremonial law could
have no force." -Ibid., p. 1095.

6. 'What came about between Jew and Gentile as a result of the abolition
of the law contained in ordinances? Ephesians 2:16.

" ... The spirit which built up the partition wall between Jew and Gen-
tile is still active. Pride and prejudice have built strong walls of separation
between different classes of men. Christ and His mission have been mis-
represented, and multitudes feel that they are virtually shut away from the
ministry of the gospel. But let them not feel that they are shut away from
Christ...." -The Desire of Ages, p.403.
"The veil is rent, the partition walls broken down, the handwriting of-or-
dinances canceled. By virtue of His blood the enmity is abolished. Through
faith in Christ Jew and Gentile may partake of the living bread." .:.-. The SDA
Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 5, p. 1109.

service of the Master." -Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 196.

8. Through whom alone have all access unto the Father? Ephesians
2:18.

Heavenly Citizenship D Thursday
April 21
9. To what family did the Ephesians now belong? And upon what foun-
dation were they built? Who is the chief corner stone? Ephesians
2:19, 20.

"To those who believe, Christ is a sure foundation. Upon this living stone,
Jews and Gentiles alike may build. It is broad enough for all and strong
enough to sustain the weight and burden of the whole world." -The Acts of
the Apostles, p. 175.

10. What do all who are converted become in the spiritual temple in
which God is pleased to dwell? Ephesians 2:21, 22.

" ... You are building on God's word, and your character will be builded
after the similitude of the character of Christ.
"Christ, the true foundation, is a living stone; His life is imparted to all
that are built upon Him. 'Ye also, as living stones, are built up a spiritual

An Open Door o Sunday

May 1
1. What courage and other privileges may we have "by the faith of
him"? Ephesians 3:12; Hebrews 4:16.

" ... In order to have spiritual life and energy, we must have actual inter-
course with our heavenly Father. Our minds may be drawn out toward Him; we
may meditate upon His works, His mercies, His blessings; but this is not, in

must have something to say to Him concerning our actual life." -Steps to
Christ, p. 93.

2. What did the apostle admonish the Ephesians that they should not do

A Royal Family o Monday

May 2
3. What was the secret of the apostle's great spiritual power? Ephesians
3:14. . '

"By the grace of Christ the apostles were made what they were. It was
sincere devotion and humble, earnest prayer that brought them into close
communion with Him. They sat together with Him in heavenly places. They

Spirit." -Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 387, 388.

6. What great work did he wish to see accomplished in their hearts by

faith? Where had their spiritual roots to be? Ephesians 3:17.

" ... In its power, men and women have broken the chains of sinful habit.
They have renounced selfishness. The profane have become reverent, the
drunken sober, the profligate pure. Souls that have borne the likeness of Satan
have been transformed into the image of God. This change is itself the miracle
of miracles. A change wrought by the word, it is one of the deepest mysteries of
the word. We cannot understand it; we can only believe, as declared by the
Scriptures, it is 'Christ in you, the hope of glory.' Colossians 1:27." -
Education, p. 172.

The Immeasurable Love of Christ o Wednesday

May 4
7. What manner is the extent of the plan of redemption and in what
directions is it to be measured? Ephesians 3: 18.

"Truth in Christ and through Christ is measureless. The student of Scrip-

ture looks, as it were, into a fountain that deepens and broadens as he gazes
into its depths. Not in this life shall we comprehend the mystery of God's love
in giving His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. The work of our Redeemer

only the glimmering of divine glory and of the infinitude of knowledge and

-21-
wisdom; we have, as it were, been working on the surface of the mine, when
rich golden ore is beneath the surface, to reward the one who will dig for
it...." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 113.

Lessons, p. 147.

10. Unto whom alone did Paul give the glory and how long will God's
children have the privilege of glorifying His holy name? Ephesians
3:21; Isaiah 66:23.

"And the years of eternity, as they roll, will bring richer and still more
glorious revelations of God and of Christ. As knowledge is progressive, so will
love, reverence, and happiness increase. The more men learn of God, the
greater will be their admiration of His character. As Jesus opens before them
the riches of redemption and the amazing achievements in the great con-
troversy with Satan, the hearts of the ransomed thrUl with more fervent
devotion, and with more rap.turous joy they sweep the harps of gold; and, ten
thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands of voices unite to

Gifts to a Unified Church D Monday

May 9
3. What has each individual Christian received? Ephesians 4:7.

" ... Grace is an attribute shown to undeserving human beings. We did

not seek after it; it was sent in search of us. God rejoices to bestow grace upon

, unworthy. Our need is the qualification which gives us the assurance that we
shall receive the gift." -Testimonies to Ministers, p. 519.

"Through the diversity of the gifts and governments that He has placed in
the church, they will all come to the unity of the faith." -Testimonies to
Ministers, p. 29.

in undimmed luster to the world. Christ has given to His church ample
facilities, that He may receive a large revenue of glory from His redeemed,
purchased possession. He has bestowed upon His people capabilities and
blessings that they may represent His own sufficiency. The church, endowed
with the righteousness of Christ, is His depositary, in which the riches of His

May 15
1. What were the Ephesians admonished to shun? Ephesians 4:17, 18.

" ... Whatever others in the church or in the world might do was nothing
to them; for, said they, whom have we to follow but Christ? He has left us a
command to walk even as He walked. We must live as seeing Him who is in-
visible, and do what we do heartily, as to the Lord and not unto men." -
Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 138.

2. How far did the Gentiles go in evil doing? Ephesians 4:19.

Putting Off the Old Man o Monday

May 16
3. What great contrast to this evil state did the gospel present?
Ephesians 4:20,21.

"Thus it is with everyone who is truly converted. He bears precious fruit,

and in so doing walks as Christ walked, talks as He talked, works as He
worked, and the truth as it is in Jesus, through him, makes an impression in
his home, in his neighborhood, and in tlie church. He is building a character
for eternity, while working out his own salvation with fear and trembling. He
is exemplifying before the world the valuable principles of truth, showing what
the truth will do for the life and character of the genuine believer...." -
Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 569.

4. What were they expected to put off after, coming in conta~t with
Christ? Ephesians 4:22 R. V.; Colossians 3:5-8.

The Renewal of the Mind D Tuesday
May 17
5. What renewal had to take place and what had to be put on?
Ephesians 4:23, 24; John 3:3.

" ... Once they were corrupt, degraded, enslaved by lustful passions;
they were drugged by worldly opiates, blinded, bewildered, and betrayed by

there must be a decided change in their life and character." -Testimonies,
vol. 5, p. 172.

6. What special sin is mentioned as militating against the truth?

Ephesians 4:25; Job 5:12.

"Everything that Christians do should be as transparent as the sunlight.

Truth is of God; deception, in everyone of its myriad forms, is of Satan; and
whoever in any way departs from the straight line of truth is betraying himself
into the power of the wicked one...." -The Mount of Blessing, p.68.

Casting Off Old Habits D Wednesday

May 18
7. What emotion is mentioned as one that the evil one can easily use to
bring us into sin? Ephesians 4:26,27.

"It is true there is an indignation that is justifiable, even in the followers

of Christ. When they see that God is dishonored, and His service brought into
disrepute, when they see the innocent oppressed, a righteous indignation stirs
the soul. Such anger, born of sensitive morals, is not a sin. But those who at
any supposed provocation feel at liberty to indulge anger or resentment are
opening the heart to Satan. Bitterness and animosity must be banished from
the soul if we would be in harmony with heaven." -The Desire of Ages,
p.31O.

8. How does the apostle expose the fallacy of the idea that the world
owes everyone a living? What admonition are we given concerning

thing as a truly converted person living a helpless, useless life. It is not possi-

4:29,30.

"Of all the gifts that God has bestowed upon men, none is more precious
than the gift of speech. If sanctified by the Holy Spirit, it is a power for good. It
is with the tongue that we convince and persuade; with it we offer prayer and
praise to God; and with it we convey rich thoughts of the Redeemer's
love...." -Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 337.

10. What other works of the flesh are the Ephesians exhorted to forsake?
What virtues are to be put in place of these? Ephesians 4:31, 32.

"The spirit of hate and reveng~ originated with Satan, and it led him to
put to death the Son of God. Whoever cherishes malice or unkindness is
cherishing the same spirit, and its fruit will be unto death." -The Mount of
Blessing, p. 56.
" ... Let Christ, the divine Life, dwell in you and through you reveal the
heaven-born love that will inspire hope in the hopeless and bring heaven's

Lord: walk as children of light." Ephesians 5:8.

Walking in Christ's Footsteps o Sunday

May 22
1. What great privilege have those who accept Christ as their Saviour?
Ephesians 5:1; 1 John 2:6.

" ... In every sphere where man shall be placed, the Lord Jesus has left us
His footprints. We do well to follow Him. The Spirit by which He spake, we
must cherish; we are to present the truth as it is in Jesus. We are to follow Him
especially in heart purity, in love. Self must be hid with Christ in God: then
when Christ, who is our life, shall appear, we also shall appear with Him in
glory." -Testimonies to Ministers, p. 512.

2. What are they admonished to do and why? Ephesians 5:2~ Matthew

16:24.

" ... All who long to bear the likeness of the character of God shall be
satisfied. The Holy Spirit never leaves unassisted the soul who is looking unto
Jesus. He takes of the things of Christ and shows. them unto him. If the eye is
kept fixed on Christ, the work of the Spirit ceases not until the soul is
conformed to His image. The pure elementoflove will expand the soul, giving
it a capacity for higher attainments, for increased knowledge of heavenly
things, so that it will not rest short of the fullness...." -The Desire of Ages,
p.302.

3. What terrible sin, so common today, should not even be named among
believers? What other evils also very prevalent in our time, should
not be found among them? Ephesians 5:3, 4.

"Our natural tendencies, unless corrected by the Holy Spirit of God, have
in them the seed of moral death. Unless we become vitally connected with

temptation to sin." -Testimonies, vol. 8, pp. 315, 316.

4.· What type of people can never have any inheritance in the kingdom of
God? Ephesians 5:5; Revelation 21:8.

" ... The iniquity which abounds is not merely confined to the unbeliever
and the scoffer. Would that this were the case, but it is not. Many men and
women who profess the religion of Christ are guilty. Even some who profess to
be looking for His appearing are no more prepared for that event than Satan
himself. They are not cleansing themselves from all pollution. They have so
long served their lust that it is natural for their thoughts to be impure and
their imaginations corrupt...." -Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 346.

Walking in the Light o Tuesday

May 24
5. Against whom does the apostle wam the believers? Why does he so
earnestly warn against this danger? Ephesians 5:6, 7; 1 Corinthians
3:19; Colossians 2:8.

"The day of God's vengeance is just upon us. The seal of God will be
placed upon the foreheads of those only who sigh and cry for the abominations
done in the land. Those who link in sympathy with the world are eating and
drinking with the drunken and will surely be destroyed with the workers of ini-
quity....
"Our own course of action will determine whether we shall receive the seal
or' the living God or be cut down by the destroying weapons...." -
Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 212.

6. In what way does the apostle show them how great their privileges
are, and what they are expected to bring forth? Ephesians 5:8, 9.

"So the followers of Christ are to shed light into the darkness of the world.
Through the Holy Spirit, God's word is a light as it becomes a transforming
power in the life of the receiver. By implanting in their hearts the principles of
His word, the Holy Spirit develops in men the attributes of God. The light of
His glory-His character-is to shine forth in His followers. Thus they are to
glorify God, to lighten the path to the Bridegroom's home, to the city of God,
to the marriage supper of the Lamb." -Christ's Object Lessons, p.414.

Separation of Light and Darkness o Wednesday

through His church in lifting up the bowed down and comforting those that
mourn." -Christ's Object Lessons, p.417.
"If Christ is abiding in us, our hearts will be full of divine sympathy. The
sealed fountains of earnest, Christlike love will be unsealed." -Ibid.

8. From what were they to separate completely? What should they do on

the contrary? Why is it necessary for his former warning to be
repeated? Ephesians 5: 11, 12.

" ... Those who have learned of Christ will 'have no fellowship with the
unfruitful works of darkness.' Ephesians 5: 11. In speech, as in life, they will be

what condition should a true Christian ever be found? Ephesians
5:13, 14.

" ... The deepest midnight is no cover for the guilty one. He may think

of his heart are open to divine inspection. Every act, every word, every
thought, is as distinctly marked as though there were only one person in the
whole world, and the attention of heaven were centered upon him." -
Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 217, 218.
"The world, full of rioting, full of godless pleasure, is asleep, asleep in car-
nal security. Men are putting afar off the coming of the Lord. They laugh at
warnings. The proud boast is made, 'All things continue as they were from the
beginning.' 'Tomorrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.'
2 Peter 3:4; Isaiah 56:12...." -The Desire of Ages, p.635.

10. What is one of the most precious talents given to man and how should
it be used? What example are we given? Ephesians 5: 15, 16; John
9:4.

"Our time belongs to God. Every moment is His, and we are under the
most solemn obligation to improve it to His glory. Of no talent He has given
will He require a more strict account than of our time.
"The value of time is beyond computation. Christ regarded every
moment as precious, and.it is thus that we should regard it. Life is too short to

-31-
be trifled away. We have but a few days of probation in which to prepare for
eternity. We have no time to waste, no time to devote to selfish pleasure, no
time for the indulgence of sin...." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 342.

A GLORIOUS CHURCH

KEY TEXT: "Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will
of the Lord is." Ephesians 5:17.

An Enlightened Understanding o Sunday

May 29

1. What should be the great aim of every sincere Christian? Ephesians

5:17.

"The first great lesson in all education is to know and understand the will
of God. We should bring into every day of life the effort to' gain this
knowledge." -Counsels to Teachers, p. 447.
"By venturing to disregard the will of God upon one point, our first
parents opened the floodgates of woe upon the world. And every individual
who follows their example will reap a similar result." -The Mount of
Blessing, p. 182.

2. With what should we be filled and what should we shun? Ephesians

5: 18; Proverbs 20: 1.

"When by the Holy Spirit divine truths are impressed upon the heart,
new conceptions are awakened, and the energies hitherto dormant are aroused
to cooperate with God." -The Acts of the Apostles, p. 520.
"Think of the frightful accidents that are every day occurring through the
influence of drink.... When the matter is investigated, it is found that
someone at an important post was under the influence of drink. To what ex-
tent can one indulge the liquor habit and be safely trusted with the lives of
human beings? He can be trusted only as he totally abstains." -The Ministry
of Healing, p. 331.

-33-
Acceptable Praise o Monday
May 30
3. How should we glorify God and continually show our gratitude to
Him? Ephesians 5:19, 20.

"God is glorified by songs of praise from a pure heart filled with love and
devotion to Him. When consecrated believers assemble, their conversation
will not be upon the imperfections of others or savor of murmuring or com-
plaint; charity, or love, the bond of perfectness, will encircle them. Love to
God and their fellow men flows out naturally in words of affection, sympathy,
and esteem for their brethren. The peace of God rules in their hearts; their
words are not vain, empty, and frivolous, but to the comfort and edification of
one another...." -Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 509.

4. What attitude should be taken by church members one to another?

Ephesians 5:21; Psalm 133:1.

"The hearts of those who had been converted under the labors of the
apostles, were softened and united by Christian love. Despite former pre-
judices, all were in harmony with one another. Satan knew that so long as this
union continued to exist, he would be powerless to check the progress of gospel
truth; and he sought to take advantage of former habits of thought, in the
hope that thereby he might be able to introduce into the church elements of
disunion." -The Acts of the Apostles, pp. 87, 88.

A Divine Formula for Marriage o Tuesday

May 31
5. What relationship should exist in a Christian marriage in order to en-
sure harmony in the family? Ephesians 5:22-24.

"Let each give love rather than exact it. Cultivate that which is noblest in
yourselves, and be quick to recognize the good qualities in each other. The
consciousness of being appreciated is a wonderful stimulus and satisfaction.
Sympathy and respect ~courage the striving after excellence, and love itself
increases as it stimulates to nobler aims." -The Ministry of Healing, p. 361.

16. With what does the apostle compare a true marriage relationship? In
His great love for the church what did Christ desire to do? Ephesians
5:25,26. 1.

"Christ honored the marriage relation by making it also a symbol of the

'. union between Him and His redeemed ones. He Himself is the Bridegrobm;
the bride is the church, of which, as His chosen one, He says, 'Thou art all fair,
My love; there is no spot in thee.' Canticles 4:7." -The Ministry of Healing,
p.356. . " ..: I ' , · " .

-34-
God's Ideal for His Church o Wednesday
June 1
7. What exalted condition does Christ expect His church to reach?
Ephesians 5:27; Song of Solomon 6:10.

" ... To the church it is given 'that she should be arrayed in fine linen,
clean and white,' 'not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing.' Rev. 19:8.
The fine linen, says the Scripture, 'is the righteousness of saints.' Eph. 5:27. It
is the righteousness of Christ, His own unblemished character, that through
faith is imparted to all who receive Him as their personal Saviour." -Christ's
Object Lessons, p. 310.

8. \ What selfless love is manifested in a marriage which is after,God's

order? In what way is the Lord our Great Pattern? Ephesians 5:28-30.

" ... There are many who regard the expression of love as a weakness, and
they maintain a reserve that repels others. This spirit checks the current of
sympathy. As the social and generous impulses are repressed, they wither, and
the heart becomes desolate and cold. We should beware of this error. Love
cannot long exist without expression. Let not the heart of one connected with
you starve for the want of kindness and sympathy." -The Ministry of
Healing, p. 360.

A Mysterious Union o Thursday

June 2
9. According to the divine law from the beginning, what should a man
do? What does the apostle call this union? Ephesians 5:31,32;
Genesis 2:24.

10. What is the Christian duty of a man to his wife, and a wife towards
her husband, if the mutual bond is to be strong and deep? Ephesians
5:33.

"Neither the husband nor the wife should merge his or her individuality
in that of the other. Each has a personal relation to God. Of Him each is to
ask, 'What is right?' 'What is wrong?' 'How may I best fulfill life's purpose?'
Let the wealth of your affection flow forth to Him who gave His life for you.
Make Christ first and last and best in everything. As your IO\le for Him
becomes deeper and stronger, your love for each other will be purified and
strengthened." -The Ministry of Healing, p.361.

APPLICATION

OF CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLES

KEY TEXT: "With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men."
Ephesians 6:7.

Filial Duties o Sunday

June 5
1. What important admonition does the apostle give to children? Why is
this of such great importance? Ephesians 6:1.

" ... Children who dishonor and disobey their parents, and disregard
their advice and instructions, can have no part in the earth made new. The
purified new earth will be no place for the rebellious, the disobedient, the un-
grateful, son or daughter. Unless such learn obedience and submission here,
they will never learn it; the peace of the ransomed will not be marred by dis-
obedient, unruly, unsubmissive children. No commandment breaker can in-
herit the kingdom of heaven...." -Testimonies, vol. 1, pp. 497, 498.

2. Who is especially worthy to be honored, and what makes this com-

mandment unique? Ephesians 6:2; Deuteronomy 5: 16.

"I was referred to many passages of Scripture that clearly show the young
the will of God concerning them. These plain teachings they must meet in the
judgment. Yet there is not one young man or young woman in twenty profess-
ing the present truth who heeds these Bible teachings. The youth do not read
the word of God' enough to know its claims upon them; and yet these truths
will judge them in the great day of God, when young and old will be rewarded
according to the deeds done in the body." -Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 498.

-37-
Pilrental Responsibility D Monday
June 6
3. What wonderful promise does this commandment carry with it, and
what deeper meaning does it contain for the future life? Ephesians
6:3•.

"I entreat the youth for their souls' sake to heed the exhortation of the
inspired apostle. All these gracious instructions, warnings, and reproofs will be
either a savor of life unto life or of death unto death." -Testimonies, vol. 1,
p.499.

" 'Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these
things shall be added unto you.' This is the first great object-the kingdom of
heaven, the righteousness of Christ. Other objects to be attained should be
secondary to these." -Ibid., p.502.

4. What serious admonition is addressed to fathers and why? Ephesians

6:4 (first part); Colossians 3:21.

" ... You have robbed your children of their rights by not interesting
yourself in their education and instructing them patiently and faithfully in
regard to forming characters for heaven. Your course has done much to destroy
their confidence in you. You are exacting, overbearing, tyrannical; you fret,
and scold, and censure, and by so doing wean their affections from you. You
treat them as though they had no just rights, as though they were machines to
turn in your hands according to your pleasure... ." -Testimonies, vol. 2,
pp. 94, 95.

Attitude of Servants D Tuesday

June 7
5: What responsibility is laid upon fathers in the upbringing of their
children? Ephesia~s 6:4 (last part); Genesis 18: 19.

"Here the duties of parents are clearly set forth. The word of God is to be
their daily monitor. It gives such instruction that parents need not err in
regard to the education of their children; but it admits of no indifference or
negligence. The law of God is to be kept before the minds of the children as the
great moral standard... ." -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 329.
"When parents and children meet at the final reckoning, what a scene
will be presented! Thousands of children who have been slaves to appetite and
debasing vice, whose lives are moral wrecks, will stand face to face with the
parents who made them what they are. Who but the parents must bear this
fearful responsibility? .. " -Ibid., vol. 3, p. 568.

-38-
6. What special counsel does the apostle give to servants? What should
they always keep in mind? Ephesians 6:5; 2 Peter 2:18.

"The Israelites had lately been servants themselves, and now that they
were to have servants under them, they were to beware of indulging the spirit
of cruelty and exaction from which they had suffered under their Egyptian
taskmasters. The memory of their own bitter servitude should enable them to
put themselves in the servant's place, leading them to be kind and com-
passionate, to deal with others as they would wish to be dealt with." -
Patriarch$ and Prophets, p. 310.

Christian Goodwill in Service o Wednesday

June 8
7. What should servants particularly avoid and whose will should they
endeavor to carry out in their duties? Ephesians 6:6; 1 Corinthians
4:2.

". . . God is a searcher of hearts and a trier of the reins, and will accept
nothing less than entire devotion to the work and consecration to Himself. All
in the office should take up their daily duties as if in the presence of God. They
should not be satisfied with doing just enough to pass along, and receive their
wages; but all should work in any place where they can help the most. In
Brother White's absence there are some faithful ones; there are others who are
eyeservants. If all in the office who profess to be followers of Christ had been
faithful in the performance of duty in the office, there would have been a great
change for the better...." -Testimonies, vol. 3, pp. 191, 192.

.8. In what spirit should all duties be carried out? Ephesians 6:7;
1 Corinthians 10:31.

" ... To have firm religious principles is an inestimable treasure. It is the

purest, highest, and most elevated influence mortals can possess. Such have
an anchor. Every act is well considered, lest its effect be injurious to another
and lead away from Christ. The constant inquiry of the mind is: Lord, how
shall I best serve Thee, and glorify Thy name in the earth? How shall I con-
duct my life to make Thy name a praise in the earth, and lead others to love,
serve, and honor Thee? .. " -Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 129.

Christian Forbearance of Masters o Thursday

June 9
9. What can the faithful servant be assured of receiving? Ephesians 6:8;
Revelation 22:12. t

-39-
10. How is the duty of masters set forth with respect to those who serve
them? What must they continually keep in mind? Ephesians 6:9;
Philemon 10·11, 16·19.

"Paul's letter to Philemon shows the influence of the gospel upon the
relation between master and servant. Slaveholding was an established in-
stitution throughout the Roman Empire, and both masters and slaves were
found in most of the churches for which Paul labored." -The Acts of the
Apostles, p. 459.
"How fitting an illustration of the love of Christ for the repentant sinner!
The servant who had defrauded his master had nothing with which to make
restitution. The sinner who has robbed God of years of service has no means of
canceling the debt. Jesus interposes between the sinner and God, saying, I will
pay the debt. Let the sinner be spared; I will suffer in his stead." -Ibid.,
p.458. .

SPIRITUAL WARFARE

KEY TEXT: "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against prin-
cipalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of
this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."
Ephesians 6:12.

Importance of the Armor o Sunday

June 12

1. What important admonition did the apostle give to the believers?

Ephesians 6: 10.

" '... Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand... in
the evil day, and having done all, to stand.' Oh, what a day is before us! What
sifting will there be among those who claim to be the children of God! The un-
just will be found among the just. Those who have great light and who have
not walked in it will have darkness corresponding to the light they have
despised...." -Testimonies to Ministers, p. 163.

2. How only could they hope to become strong in the Lord? What would
it enable them to stand against? Ephesians 6: 11.

" ... We must have on the whole armor of God and be ready at any
moment for conflict with the powers of darkness. When temptations and trials
rush in upon us, let us go to God and agonize with Him in prayer. He will not
turn us away empty, but will give us grace and strength to overcome, and to
break the power of the enemy. Oh, that all could see these things in their true
light and endure hardness as good soldiers of Jesus! ..." -Early Writings,
p.46.

Manner of the Enemy Arrayed Against the Christian D Monday
June 13
3. In this spiritual warfare who are the powers against which God's peo-
ple are warring? Ephesians 6: 12; Romans 8:38, 39.

" ... It is impossible for us in our own strength to maintain the conflict;
and whatever diverts the mind of God, whatever leads to self-exaltation or to
self-dependence, is surely preparing the way for our overthrow. The tenor of
the Bible is to inculcate distrust of human power and to encourage trust in
divine power." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p.717. .

4. To be able to stand in the evil day how much must we have done? Why
are we admonished that all of this spiritual armor must be worn?
Ephesians 6:13; 2 Corinthians 10:4.

"If there is ever one time above another when men need to preserve their
connection with God, it is when they are called to bear special responsibility.
It is not safe for us, when going into battle, to cast away our weapons. It is then
that we need to be equipped with the whole armor of God. Every piece is es-
sential." -Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 190.

The Great Protecting Virtues Needed D Tuesday

June 14
5. What parts of the armor have first to be put on? What protection do
these two pieces of armor afford? Ephesians 6: 14; Luke 12:35.

" ... 'Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth.' Ephesians
6: 14. He who utters untruths sells his soul in a cheap market. His falsehoods
may seem to serve in emergencies; he may thus seem to make business ad-
vancement that he could not gain by fair dealing; but he finally reaches the
place where he can trust no one. Himself a falsifier, he has no confidence in the·
word of others." -The Acts of the Apostles, p. 76.

6. With what suitable footwear must the preachers of the gospel be

shod? What does the acceptance of the gospel always bring to the in-
dividual, and what are the results of its rejection? Ephesians 6: 15;
Isaiah 52:7; Matthew 10: 11-14.

" ... They were warned to beware of men, for they should be delivered up
to the councils and scourged in the synagogues.
"Men's hearts are no softer today than when Christ was upon the earth.
They will do all in their power to aid the great adversary in making it as hard
as possible for the servants of Christ, just as the people did with Christ when
He was upon the earth...." -Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 234.

-42-
Two Further Bulwarks Against the Enemy o Wednesday
June 15
7. How can we hope to protect ourselves from the fiery darts of the
enemy? When we lack faith how vulnerable do we become? In view of
this fact, how important does the admonition of the apostle Paul in
Hebrews become? Ephesians 6:16; Hebrews 11:6; 10:38.

"We must put on the armor and be prepared to successfully resist all the
attacks of Satan. His malignity and cruel power are not sufficiently estimated.
When he finds himself foiled upon one point he takes new ground and fresh
tactics, and tries again, working wonders in order to deceive and destroy the
children of men...." -Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 212.

8. How does the helmet signify the contemplation of the great theme that
should occupy the mind continually? What is signified by the weapon
to be wielded by the Christian? Ephesians 6:17; Luke 10:26.

"The student of the Bible should be taught to approach it in the spirit of a

learner. We are to search its pages, not for proof to sustain our opinions, but in
order to know what God says." -Education, p. 189.
"The study of the Bible demands our most diligent effort and persevering
thought. As the miner digs for the golden treasure in the earth, so earnestly,
persistently, must we seek for the treasure of God's word." -Ibid.

Care of the Armor o Thursday

June 16
9. In order to keep the armor bright and shining what effective means
must be constantly applied? Ephesians 6: 18; Mark 6:46.

"We should pray in the family circle, and above all we must not neglect
secret prayer, for this is the life of the soul. It is impossible for the soul to
flourish while prayer is neglected.... In solitude let the soul be laid open to
the inspecting eye of God. Secret prayer is to be heard only by the prayer-
hearing God. No curious ear is to receive the burden of such petitions. In secret
prayer the soul is free from surrounding influences, free from excitement....
"Pray in your closet, and as you go about your daily labor let your heart
be often uplifted to God. It was thus that Enoch walked with God. These silent
prayers rise like precious incense before the throne of grace. Satan cannot
overcome him whose heart is thus stayed upon God." -Steps to Christ,
pp. 98, 99.

10. With what beautiful benediction does Paul close this epistle? Having
now reviewed the spiritual armor, we find that no protection has been
given to the back. Why is this? Ephesians 6: 19-24; Nehemiah
6:10, 11.

-43-
"In Nehemiah's firm devotion to the work of God, and his equally firm
reliance on God, lay the reason of the failure of his enemies to draw him into
their power. The soul that is indolent falls an easy prey to temptation; but in
the life that has a noble aim, an absorbing purpose, evil finds little
foothold...." -Prophets and Kings, p. 660.

GREAT LESSONS FROM THIS EPISTLE

KEY TEXT: "But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all
things, which is the head, even Christ." Ephesians 4:15.

Our Aim o Sunday

June 19
1. As we review the great lessons in this epistle, what high goal is set
before us? Ephesians 4:22-24.

"True sanctification means perfect love, perfect obedience, perfect con-

formity, to the will of God. We are to be sanctified to God through obedience
to the truth. Our conscience must be purged from dead works to serve the liv-
ing God. We are not yet perfect; but it is our privilege to cut away from the en-
tanglements of self and sin, and advance to perfection. Great possibilities,
high and holy attainments, are placed within the reach of all." -The Acts of
the Apostles, p. 565.

2. How only can we attain to this high calling? Ephesians 3:17-19.

" ... This conformity to Jesus will not be unobserved by the world. It is a
subject of notice and comment. The Christian may not be conscious of the
great change; for the more closely he resembles Christ in character the more
humble will be his opinion of himself; but it will be seen and felt by all around
him. Those who have had the deepest experience in the things of God are the
farthest removed from pride or self-exaltation. They have the humblest
thoughts of self, and the most exalted conceptions of the glory and excellence
of Christ. They feel that the lowest place in His service is too honorable for
them." -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 223.

The Sinner's Need o Monday

June 20
3. How helpless and hopeless is the condition of an individual without
the gospel? Ephesians 2:12.

" ... '0 wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from this body of
death? Romans 7:24, margin. Such is the cry that has gone up from burdened
hearts in all lands and in all ages. To all, there is but one answer, 'Behold the
Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.' John 1:29." -Steps to
Christ, p. 19.

-45-
4. What glorious promise is given to those who strive to reach the high
goal? Ephesians 1:11, 12.

"We may have a vision of the future, the blessedness of heaven. In the
Bible are revealed visions of the future glory, scenes pictured by the hand of
God, and these are dear to His church. By faith we may stand on the threshold
of the eternal city, and hear the gracious welcome given to those who in this
life cooperate with Christ, regarding it as an honor to suffer for His sake. As
the words are spoken, 'Come, ye blessed of My Father,' they cast their crowns
at the feet of the Redeemer, ..." -The Acts of the Apostles, p. 601.

Redeeming Love 0 Tuesday

June 21
5. How has this vista of future glory for God's people been made
possible? Ephesians 1:19-23.

"With joy unutterable, rulers and principalities and powers acknowledge

the supremacy of the Prince of life. The angel host prostrate themselves before
Him, while the glad shout fiUs all the courts of heaven, 'Worthy is the Lamb
that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and
honor, and glory, and blessing.' Rev. 5:12." -The Desire of Ages, p.834.

6. What great mystery had been hidden concerning the gospel up to that
time? Ephesians 3:6.

"On hearing this account, the brethren were silenced....

"Thus, without controversy, prejudice was broken down, the ex-
clusiveness established by the custom of ages was abandoned, and the way
was opened for the gospel to be proclaimed to the Gentiles." -The Acts of the
Apostles, p. 142.

Spiritual Strength in Church and Family 0 Wednesday

June 22
7. If the church is to prosper, what great principle must prevail?
Ephesians 4:1-6.

"We profess to have more truth than other denominations; yet if this does
not lead to greater consecration, to purer, holier lives, ofwhat benefit is it to us?
It would be better for us never to have seen the light of truth than to profess to
accept it and not be sanctified through it." -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 620.

8. What principles have been laid down to promote a happy family life?
Ephesians 5:22-27.

"In your life union your affections are to be tributary to each other's hap-
piness. Each is to minister to the happiness of the other.... Your love for that

-46-
which is human is to be secondary to your love for God. The wealth of your
affection is to flow forth to Him who gave His life for you. Living for God, the
soul sends forth to Him its best and highest affections. Is the greatest outflow
of your love toward Him who died for you? If it is, your love for each other will
be after heaven's order." -Testimonies, vol. 7, pp. _45,46.

Danger of Underestimating the Conflict D Thursday

June 23
9. What other admonitions are given to promote peace and harmony?
Ephesians 5:11-15. .

" ... We have a powerful, deceptive foe with whom to contend, and our
only safety is in Him who is to come, who will consume this archdeceiver with
the spirit of His mouth, and destroy with the brightness of His coming.
"I commend this to you in the fear of God, and implore you to arise from
the dead, and Christ shall give you life." -Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 173.

10. In this conflict for eternal life, what should we never forget? 1 Peter
5:8, 9; Ephesians 6: 12. Wherein does our only safety lie? Ephesians
6:11.

" ... Commit the keeping of your soul to God, and trust in Him. Talk and
think of Jesus. Let self be lost in Him. Put away all doubt; dismiss your fears.
Say with the apostle Paul, 'I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the
life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved
me, and gave Himself for me.' Galatians 2:20. Rest-in God. He is able to keep
that which you have committed to Him. If you will leave yourself in His
hands, He will bring you off more than conqueror through Him that has loved
you." -Steps to Christ, p. 72.

who had been there before him; and when he had pitched his tent, he
repaired the altar, and there worshiped the living God." -Patriarchs
