Thirteenth Sabbath Offering
By 1962, three families with a total of six members had located in

the Los Angeles area with the purpose to witness for the Lord. Later, a
colporteur brother working in the area accepted the call to work part-
time as a Bible worker. When the little group had grown he was
ordained as an elder. At the time the Southwest U.S. Field was formed
lin 1969, the Los Angeles church was the nucleus. From the original six
.members, .the regular Sabbath School attendance is now over one
hundred each week. The members are active including the children,
and distribute literature with success.
In the Los Angeles area and nearby, there are large concentrations of
Seventh-day Adventists and the bold listings of our name in the
telephone directories bring more inquiries than anywhere else. As the
torch of the Present Truth has been kindled in this city, the time has
come to establish a memorial for the Lord. A church building is
needed and will be a physical witness at all times. "Special light has
been given me regarding the character and magnitude of the work to
be done in Los Angeles. Several times messages have been given
regarding the duty that rests upon us of proclaiming the third angel's
message with power in that city." -Evangelism, p. 406.
Southwest U.S. Field includes not only Southern California and Los
Angeles, but also the states of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. These
are all contiguous with the Mexican border and have large con-
centrations of souls with Spanish as their mother tongue. Over a
million of them live in Los Angeles, and with their compatriots south
of the border, look to this Field for the Bread of Life.
Almost from the beginning the believers in Los Angeles established
a building fund in order to have their own church. One of the brethren
donated a lot on which to build. Negotiations with the city for the
necessary permits are proceeding, but a problem arises from the need
to have it large enough for the congregation, on the lot that they
already have.
Los Angeles ranks as the ninth most populous area in the world,
there being over 10 million Angelinos in 469 sq. miles (1202 sq. kms.)
so the expenses to build are very high. For this reason, they are appeal-

FOREWORD
"Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon,
clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners." Solomon's
Song 6:10.
The time is fast approaching when the realization of this text will
be fulfilled. Christ will have a perfect church on earth when He comes,
a church that will reflect His image fully; a church without fault or
blemish; a church that represents faithfully to the world and the uni-
verse, the result of the gospel message in its fullness. It must be a
church of overcomers, who have the faith of Jesus, the very faith that
gave Him the victory in all things.
The apostle Paul had this in mind when he wrote the epistle to the
Ephesian believers who lived in a city notorious for its corruption and
immorality, yet even these that had been purified by the gospel and
who still had to live in the same environment, were expected to go on
to perfection. "Ephesians" should be of special interest to every Bible
student living in this time when the world is rapidly approaching the
same condition-even that of Sodom and Gomorrah. " ... We should
all study carefully the instruction given in Corinthians and Ephesians
regarding our relation to one another as members of the body of
Christ."-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 500.
The remnant church of the last period must be perfect. For this
reason, this series of lessons has been prepared to bring attention and
study to this epistle. This series should not be considered exhaustive
but should serve to arouse a desire to understand more fully the
valuable counsel given. All need to learn from Christ personally how to
attain to the perfection and the full measure of His likeness.
It should be the goal of every student in the Sabbath School to un-

derstand and experience how they may have the righteousness-right-
doing-that the grace of Christ makes possible. The message of 1888
must be translated into a practical reality. The mind of Christ must be
in every member and His Spirit must guide the believers in all things.
"Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." Philippians
2:5.

DIVINE PREDESTINATION
KEY TEXT: "That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might

gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in

Background to the Epistle o Sunday
March 27
1. When Paul visited Ephesus, a celebrated city in Asia Minor, how
many believers did he find? Acts 19:1,7.
When Paul came to Ephesus in A.D. 54, he began teaching in the Jewish
synagogue. Several converts to the faith of the gospel received the baptism of
the Holy Spirit and the miraculous gift of tongues and prophecy. Later, he
preached and instructed in the school of Tyrannus.
2. What was the name of the goddess worshipped at Ephesus, and how
benighted and superstitious were these people? Acts 19:23-28.
" ... Ephesus was not only the most magnificent, but the most corrupt, of
the cities of Asia. Superstition and sensual pleasure held sway over her teem-
ing population. Under the shadow of her temples, criminals of every grade
found shelter, and the most degrading vices flourished." -The Acts of the

3. What did Paul see in the city? 1 Corinthians 16:8, 9.
" ... Sorcery had been prohibited by the Mosaic law, on pain of death,
yet from time to time it had been secretly practiced by apostate Jews. At the
time of Paul's visit to Ephesus there were in the city 'certain of the vagabond

4. What resulted from the sowing of the gospel seed in the great city of
Ephesus? Ephesians 2:1, 5, 6.
"With deep interest and grateful, wondering joy the brethren listened to
Paul's words. By faith they grasped the wonderful truth of Christ's atoning
sacrifice and received Him as their Redeemer. They were then baptized in the
name of Jesus, and as Paul 'laid his hands upon them,' they received also the
baptism of the Holy Spirit, by which they were enabled to speak the languages

of other nations and to prophesy. Thus they were qualified to labor as mis-
sionaries in Ephesus and its vicinity and also to go forth to proclaim the gospel

5. Later when writing to the Ephesians for what did the apostle first of
all give thanks? Ephesians 1:3.
"Nothing tends more to promote health of body and of soul than does a
spirit of gratitude and praise." -The Ministry of Healing, p.251.
" ... No tongue can express, no finite mind can conceive, the blessing
that results from appreciating the goodness and love of God. Even on earth we
may have joy as a wellspring, never failing, because fed by the streams that
flow from the throne of God.

7. How does Paul explain the great truth of predestination? Ephesians
1:4-6; Romans 8:29, 30.
" ... 'The grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men. '
'This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; who will have all
men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one
God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; who
gave Himself a ransom for all.' Titus 2:11; 1 Timothy 2:3-6. The Spirit of God
is freely bestowed to enable every man to lay hold upon the means of
salvation. Thus Christ, 'the true Light,' 'lighteth every man that cometh into
the world.' Jolin 1:9. Men fail of salvation through their own willful refusal of

9. To what have all men access through the grace of Christ? Ephesians

" ... Grace is an attribute shown to undeserving human beings. We did

not seek after it; it was sent in search of us. God rejoices to bestow grace upon
all who hunger and thirst for it, not'because we are worthy, but because we are
unworthy. Our need is the qualification which gives us the assurance that we

10. What has God through His abundant grace made known to His

"Songs of triumph mingle with the music from angel harps, till heaven
seems to overflow with joy and praise. Love has conquered. The lost is found.
Heaven rings with voices in lofty strains proclaiming, 'Blessing, and honor,

Lamb forever and ever.' Revelation 5:13.

1. What have we obtained through Christ and what is His purpose for
us? Ephesians 1:11, 12.
"In view of the glorious inheritance that may be his, 'what shall a man
give in exchange for his soul?' Matthew 16:26. He may be poor, yet he
possesses in himself a wealth and dignity that the world could never bestow.
The soul redeemed and cleansed from sin, with all its noble powers dedicated
to the service of God, is of surpassing worth; and there is joy in heaven in the
presence of God and the holy angels over one soul redeemed, a joy that is
expressed in songs of holy triumph." -Steps to Christ, p. 126.
2. After the Ephesians had accepted the gospel, what assurance was
given them? Ephesians 1:13, 14.
" ... And the apostle Paul points forward to the 'redemption of the
purchased possession.' Ephesians 1:14. God created the earth to be the abode
of holy, happy beings. The Lord 'formed the earth and made it; He hath

"While the sinner cannot save himself, he still has something to do to

attacks of Satan. His malignity and cruel power are not sufficiently estimated.

1. As we review the great lessons in this epistle, what high goal is set
before us? Ephesians 4:22-24.
"True sanctification means perfect love, perfect obedience, perfect con-

formity, to the will of God. We are to be sanctified to God through obedience
to the truth. Our conscience must be purged from dead works to serve the liv-
ing God. We are not yet perfect; but it is our privilege to cut away from the en-
tanglements of self and sin, and advance to perfection. Great possibilities,
high and holy attainments, are placed within the reach of all." -The Acts of

2. How only can we attain to this high calling? Ephesians 3:17-19.
" ... This conformity to Jesus will not be unobserved by the world. It is a
