Lesson 3-1

x and y intercepts
Objective: SWBAT identify x and y intercepts on a graph. SWBAT graph lines
using the points for x and y intercepts.

Prior Knowledge
 Understanding on how to plot points on a coordinate plane.
 Understanding of how to identify coordinate points.
 General understanding of how to graph linear equations on a coordinate plane in
slope intercept form.

Lesson (bulk) (30-35 minutes)
Activity- “Who is the best teacher?”
 Students begin reading guided notes on x and y intercepts, how to identify them and
use them to graph lines.
 Students are instructed to try to thoroughly understand the process. They then
complete an example on the concept by themselves. They ask me questions if
necessary to clear up any misconceptions.
 Once they are finished they will take turns in their teams explaining the process to
one another. Assign the students specific problems. The worksheet I used for them to
work on is:___________
 Each team must pick only one person to be the team’s model teacher. (I have 4 teams
in my class, so by the end of this activity, I will have 4 students chosen).
 At this point, I tell them to be creative. Sing song, write a poem, come up with a rap,
or a skit- anything that will make their lesson stand out in comparison to their
classmates. I also say they have to teach their lesson in under 5 minutes! They will be
cut off if they go longer than 5 minutes
 Each student takes their turn teaching the concept.
 The class then votes for the best teacher! The winner is rewarded.
Lesson (Closure) (5 Minutes)
 Students answer quick true/false statements with agreeing or disagree and providing
evidence to support their thinking.
 We discuss the correct answers as a class.
 Students begin working on homework aligned with concept.
