Introduction

Ambewela tank is situated in Ambewela Divisional secretariat division, Nuwara-Eliya District. Its

maintained by the Irrigation Department of Sri Lanka. The co-ordinates of the tank are

M/11(2.80x4.30). This reservoir has 1850 Acft. Tank bund length is 400 ft. its catchment area

situated at highly rain fall area. Therefore, it has continuous inflow to tank observed during all of

the year. Currently the main purpose of the tank is to provide water to the irrigational purposes.

Most recently, National Water Supply and Drainage Board of Sri Lanka has requested a daily

demand of 13000m3 from tank for the domestic water requirement crisis of the area.

Five farmers association areas and approximately 1200 acres are cultivated under Ambewela

Irrigation scheme. The main cultivation is vegetables including Carrot, Beans, Cabbage, Sweet

Potatoes. They are cultivated in four seasons as main two Sri Lankan Seasons (“Yala” and “Maha”)

and two intermediate seasons. Therefore, its required to provide water throughout the year and

a high quantity of outflow is needed. Presence of high losses in the tank and delivering system has

increased the water demand further.

By raising bund to retain water for water board requirement is the objective of the project while
without interfering to the farmer’s cultivations programmers.
Its expected in this project to find out the amount of water in tank for irrigation and domestic
requirement and in order to increase the capacity of the tank, it is necessary to design and plan
to existing spill & existing bund
