Tutorial 3: Transitional Kinematics

1. A student throws a water balloon vertically downward from the top of a building. The
balloon leaves the thrower’s hand with a speed of 6.00 m/s. Air resistance may be
ignored, so the water balloon is in free fall after it leaves the thrower’s hand.

(c) What is the speed after falling 10.0 m?

[Answer: (a) 25.6 m/s; (b) 31.6 m; (c) 15.2 m/s]

2. A certain volcano on Earth can eject rocks vertically to a maximum height H. If a

volcano on Mars also eject its rocks with the same initial velocity and assuming no air
resistance on both planets.
(a) How high (in terms of H) would these rocks go?
(b) If the rocks are in the air for a time T on Earth, for how long (in terms of T)
will they be in the air on Mars?
Given that the acceleration due to gravity on Mars is 3.71 m/s2.
[Answer: (a) 2.64H; (b) 2.64T]

3. A ball is thrown straight up from the ground with speed u. At the same instant, a
second ball is dropped from rest from a height H, directly above the point where the
first ball was thrown upward. There is no air resistance.
(a) Find the time t at which the two balls collide.
(b) Find the value of H in terms of u and g so that at the instant when the balls
collide, the first ball is at the highest point of its motion.
[Answer: (a) t = H/u; (b) H = u2/g]

4. While standing on a bridge 25.0 m above the ground, you drop a stone from rest.
When the stone has fallen 3.20 m, you throw a second stone straight down. What
initial velocity must you give to the second stone if they are both to reach the ground
at the same instant?
[Answer: –10.1 m/s]

5. A projectile is launched from ground level at an angle of 15.0° above the horizontal. It
returns to ground level. To what value should the launch angle be adjusted, without
changing the launch speed, so that the range doubles?
[Answer: 45.0°]

6. A rock is thrown upward from the level ground in such a way that the maximum
height, H of its flight is equal to its horizontal range, R.
(a) At what angle  is the rock thrown?
(b) Would your answer to part (a) be different on a different planet?
[Answer: (a) 76.0°; (b) No]

7. Figure below shows a 2.00 m tall basketball player is standing on the floor 10.0 m
from the basket where the height of the basket is 3.05 m.

If he shoots the ball at a 40.0° angle with the horizontal, at what initial speed must he
throw the basketball so that it goes through the hoop without striking the backboard?
[Answer: 10.7 m/s]

8. Figure below shows a student stands at the edge of a cliff and throws a stone
horizontally over the edge with a speed of 18.0 m/s. The cliff is 50.0 m above a flat,
horizontal beach.

(a) What are the coordinates of the initial position of the stone?
(b) What are the components of the initial velocity?
(c) Write the equations for the x-component and y-component of the velocity of
the stone with time.
(d) Write the equations for the position of the stone with time, using the
coordinates in figure.
(e) How long after being released does the stone strike the beach below the cliff?
(f) With what speed and angle of impact does the stone land?
[Answer: (a) (0.00, 50.0); (b) vox = 18.0 m/s, voy = 0; (c) vx = 18.0 m/s, vy = –9.80t;
(d) x = 18.0t, y = 50.0 – 4.90t2; (e) 3.19 s; (f) 36.1 m/s at 60.1° below horizontal]

9. A projectile is launched with an initial speed of 60.0 m/s at an angle of 30.0° above
the horizontal. The projectile lands on a hillside 4.00 s later. Neglect air friction.
(a) What is the projectile’s velocity at the highest point of its trajectory?
(b) What is the straight-line distance from where the projectile was launched to
where it hits its target?
[Answer: (a) 52.0 m/s; (b) 212 m]

horizontal ramp as shown in figure below.

distance he must clear is 20 m.
(i) How long will it take for the car to fall 1.5 m.
(ii) With what minimum speed must he drive off the horizontal ramp?
(b) If the ramp is now tilted upward, so that the “takeoff angle” is 10° above the
horizontal, what is the new minimum speed?
[Answer: (a) (i) 0.553 s, 36.2 m/s; (b) 20.1 m/s]

11. As shown in figure below, a ball rolls off the edge of a table top at a height of 1.50 m
