About Green Stewardship Guidebooks

Climate change poses a major threat to humanity. Researchers and communities have shown us that climate change affects where people can live, grow food,
maintain infrastructure, and be healthy. In September 2015, world leaders adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a set of 17 aspirational
goals to be achieved by 2030 that address shared challenges at the global and local levels. The 2030 Agenda includes a specific goal on climate action (Goal
13) and formally recognizes that the climate crisis is linked to many other global issues. In addition, Goal 13 on climate action and Goal 4 on quality education
both recognise the importance of Education for Sustainable Development and the role of education in responding to climate change.

While concerted international action is crucial to reduce climate change– through stronger international legal mechanisms, greater financial resources and
support to green technologies - responses to climate change start with each of us, with the ways by which we think and act, with our attitudes and
behaviours. Around the world, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has emerged as a cornerstone for tackling climate change. Based on the idea
that we all have a role to play in addressing global challenges, ESD promotes the knowledge, skills, and values we need to take action for a healthier, fairer,
more environmentally sustainable society.

Responding to an increased awareness about environmental issues, more and more people are choosing to make positive changes in their personal lives to
reduce their ecological footprints and prioritise caring for the environment. The term Green Stewardship encompasses ’the responsible care of land and
resources, while recognising that humans are a part of complex natural systems on earth and should embody an ethic of care’.

Keeping the natural environment healthy for future generations depends on everyone’s participation. Climate change is one of the most serious threats to a
healthy environment. Schools and school boards have a vital leadership role to play in supporting students and staff in their understanding of both the impacts of
climate change as well as the possibilities for living more sustainably on the planet.

By learning about environmental issues and deciding how to take positive action, students can become stewards of the environment, as well as leaders within
their schools, school boards and wider communities. These actions not only decrease the impact that we have on the environment but also provide
opportunities for students to apply their environmental learning in real-world contexts, preparing them to become active and engaged citizens.

Green Stewardship Guidebooks have been made possible by the best practices in Environmental Stewardship gathered over 10 years from schools participating
in the Green Stewardship Programmes around the world. Particular thanks go to our global partners who added their valuable inputs in making ‘Green
Stewardship Pakistan’ constructive and attractive for the participants.

For parents and supporters

For category 1 students, the role of supporters is vital in achieving the objectives of Green Stewardship. The
contents of the Category 1 Guidebook are developed in accordance with the developing mental capacities of
the little kids and supporters’ fruitful association with them to make those more meaningful and
comprehendible for the Green Stewards.

Being supporters, your study of the most critical challenge faced by our planet will help you in making the
concepts, as given in the guidebook, understandable for the Green Stewards according to their particular
learning capacities. The most fascinating part of your role as Green Stewardship’s supporter is to make and
submit a family Action Plan on the worksheet best suited to your particular conditions. When we exercise
solutions, we come up with brilliant ideas to contribute our parts for broader changes. No doubt, our individual
contributions are going to bring greater impact in fighting against Climate Change.

This guidebook has been established under the

‘Green Studies’ philosophy, without using the book
or any of its part as printed material.

Summer and Winter

Why is it warm in the summer and cold in the winter?

It's because the Sun is high in the sky in the summer
and very low in the sky during the winter.

The Sun makes the Earth Warm

To test this, at noon in June stand in full Sunshine and see how long your shadow is.

Then try it again in December, your shadow will be longer.

Sun makes the Earth Warm

When the Sun is high in the sky, it can make the Earth warm.

When the Sun is low in the sky, it cannot warm the Earth as much.

Our planet fulfils our needs

Five basic needs of human beings

from our planet are oxygen, water,
food, shelter and warmth.
We get these from the planet on
which we live.

We breathe oxygen from the

air
We get water from the rain
which fills our lakes, rivers and
creeks and which we store in
dams, reservoirs and water
tanks.

Our planet fulfils our needs

We get food from the plants,
animals, fish and birds.
We get shelter from the
materials we take out of the
earth and from plants that grow
in the earth (trees) to make our
homes.
We get warmth from the sun,
fire, power (electricity, gas, oil)
and our clothing.

Apart from warmth and light from

the sun, these all come from our
planet.

Our planet needs care from us

When we make our planet dirty,

the dangerous gases cover our
planet around and due to these
gases the sunlight sent by the
Sun produces more heat.

One of the dangers our planet is

facing is increasing heat in the
atmosphere which is causing
difficulty for our planet and all
life forms on it.

Our planet needs care from us

If we bring positive changes in

our lives, we will be healthy and
by doing so we can help our
planet too, in being healthier.

We all need to try to change our

ways to help the planet, the
environment and ourselves.

How can we help our planet?

Use less water
Have showers rather than baths.

Have 3 to 5 minutes quick showers

Clean your teeth by putting water into a

glass.

Use a watering can to water plants and

vegetables in the garden

Use a bucket of water to wash your

bicycle or the pet.

18

Use less Energy

Keep doors and curtains or blinds closed in summer

Adjust the thermostat during the summer/winter.

Switch off the computer, TV or radio if you are not using it.

Help your mom or dad plant a tree to help shade your house on
hot summer days.

Don’t leave the refrigerator door open.

Reuse, Reduce, Recycle

Use the recycle bin for paper and cardboard

Use re-usable bags and containers instead of disposable

ones.

Try out to pack garbage-free lunches.

Papers are made from trees. To save trees write on both

sides of paper

For your lunch, use dishes instead of paper plates. This

will not only save trees but will also reduce waste.
