1. General Specifications

Product Description The solar powered LED lighting solution shall

be designed to automatically switch ON at
dusk, operate throughout the night and
automatically switch OFF at dawn. Each solar
solution is designed for the relevant
geographical location with the capability of 2
to 3 day autonomy in continuous overcast
and rainy conditions, ensuring reliable
operation.
The low profile design reduces windage area
and allow for the use of a standard pole with
a 76mm spigot is suitable for this solution.
This makes it easy as a replacement on
existing installations. The spigot is made
from Hot dipped galvanized steel and the
closing cover from a high impact UV stable
plastic which reduces the weight of the
system. The clamps and screws are made
from 316 Stainless steel for the harsh
coastal environments.
Note that for very corrosive environs such as
coastal regions, additional care is required
on installation in order to avoid damage to
any protective layers used on the structure,
which would compromise the integrity of the
materials.
The philosophy behind BEKA Schréder’s All-
in-one solar solutions is to provide an easy to
install, balanced and well-engineered system
to ensure reliability, luminaire efficiency,
long lifetime, theft and vandal resistance. It
takes into account the conditions faced in
Africa where a lack of regular cleaning
/maintenance and harsh environmental
conditions may affect the generation ability
and efficiency of the systems.
For this reason we over-design the systems
to ensure that it always provides sufficient
generation ability.
It is designed for LED light sources between
19W and 36W it has an integrated presence
sensor to optimize lighting output.
When triggered the luminaire will go to
100% for a period of 3minutes after the
presence has gone. Then
it will reduce output to
30% until presence is detected again.

2. Solar Module

As with all our products, BEKA Schréder uses

only the best components in our solar
solutions. For this reason we only make use
of Tier 1 Photovoltaic modules which ensures
optimum performance and reliability. Tier 1
manufacturers offer a 25 year linear
performance warranty for a minimum of 81%
of the nominal power output of the module
Photovoltaic Panels over the 25 year life cycle as well as a 10
year product warranty. The PV panels
supplied are submitted to a stringent TUV
Rheinland Power controlled inspection mark.
Further the panels have a global quality
standards certification in accordance with
IEC-standards 61215 and IEC61730 and this
assures compliance to international quality
control standards.
3. Batteries
Batteries The storage technology selected for our
Integrated solar solutions is Lithium based
batteries. This results in a compact, high
performance and environmentally friendly
battery. The Lithium pack has a battery
management device as part of its design to
ensure optimal management of charging and
discharging the pack. The internal
architecture of these batteries make them
highly resistant to damage caused by deep
discharge. Service Battery life – Lithium
batteries have a float life of 18-20 years at
20ºC. Having a battery cycle life of 4 000
(charge discharge) cycles depending on the
Depth of Discharge (DOD). Lithium Battery
technology used in a well-designed and
balanced solar system will have a life
expectancy of 5 to 7 years.
Shelf life – Lithium batteries can be stored
for 2 years without additional charging. This
impacts significantly on rotational charge
and logistics.
Excellent charge performance – The Lithium
battery has a charge time of 3 to 5 times
faster than conventional batteries, when
charged by conventional means, a generator
or solar.
DOD – The Lithium battery can be
discharged to 0 Volt (100% DOD) and then
restored to full rated capacity.
Temperature resistance – The Lithium
batteries operating temperature ranges from
-20ºC to +60ºC. Due to the low internal
resistance, the internal temperature remains
low when charged and discharged. Tested
and cycled at +45ºC ambient temperature
resulted in only 25% loss of battery life,
which is rated between 7 to 10 years. The
battery delivers more than 80% of its rated
capacity at 0ºC.
A greener option –
Lithium based batteries emit no mist or
harmful, gaseous emission, as the basic
electrolyte is neutral and non-corrosive.
Lithium batteries will not cause pollution – in
line with ever increasing environmental
protection requirements (ISO 14001
certification).
Transport – New legislation does not allow for
Lithium battery packs to be put on flights as
they are classified as hazardous devices, but
are safe to transport by land and sea.

4. Charge Controller
Charge Controller The charge controller is the core of every
solar system. It regulates the flow of
current from the solar panel to the battery
during daytime and from the battery to the
luminaire at night time. It prevents the
battery from overcharging and deep
discharging thus increasing system
efficiency and expected life-span.
The charge controller acts as a daylight
switch by monitoring the voltage produced
by the PV panel. When the voltage dips
below a predetermined level it assumes
that the sun has set and switches the
luminaire on. When the voltage climbs
above this threshold again, the charge
controller assumes that the sun has risen
and switches the luminaire off again.
With innovative maximum power point
tracking technology the charge controllers
used offer maximum performance and yield
from all types of solar systems – year-
round, in any weather, and in any
environment.
Charge controller features employed in our
solar solution:
•Voltage and current regulation
• Multistage charging technology
• Current compensated load disconnection
• Automatic load reconnection
• Temperature compensation
• Integrated self-test
• Overcharge protection
• Deep discharge protection
Reverse polarity protection of load, module
and battery
• Automatic electronic fuse
• Short circuit protection of load and
module
• Overvoltage protection at module input
• Open circuit protection without battery
• Reverse current protection at night
• Over-temperature and overload
protection
• Battery overvoltage shutdown

6. Maintenance

Cleaning of Photovoltaic Solar panels surfaces are called self-

Panels cleaning, it tends to mean that the surface
is hydrophobic. Water droplets cannot stick
to these surfaces. The spurned droplets
then roll off, taking dust particles with
them. In essence, these surfaces aren’t
exactly self-cleaning. Rather, they minimise
the build-up of dirt and mineral residue that
can block the sun from
the panel. The importance of this should
not be minimized. Dirty solar panel can
have its power capabilities reduced by as
much as 30 percent in high dust / pollen or
desert areas.
Ideally solar panels should be cleaned
every few weeks to maintain peak
efficiency. We recommend this is done with
a water hose and a soft brush. Use of
detergents or chemicals is not allowed in
order to avoid damage to the solar panels
