Problems:

Z
1. Consider dx.
1 −1 + e2x
Z ∞
(a) Does e−x dx converge or diverge?
1
(b) Which of the following is true for x ≥ 1? Justify your choice.
ex
i. < e−x
−1 + e2x
ex
ii. e−x <
−1 + e2x

Z
(c) Based on your answers to (a) and (b), do you conclude that dx con-
1 −1 + e2x
verges, diverges or that (a) and (b) do not provide enough information to say.
Different answers to (a) and (b) may cause different answers for (c) to be accept-
able.

2. Consider a function f (x) continuous for x ≥ 1 with 3 ≤ f (x) ≤ 2 .
Z ∞ x x
Does sin2 (x)f (x)dx converge or diverge, or is there not enough information to
1
decide? Justify your answer.
Z ∞
3. If 0 ≤ f (x) ≤ g(x) and f (x) dx converges, then (circle the best answer):
1
Z ∞
(a) g(x) dx converges;
1
Z ∞
(b) g(x) dx diverges;
1
Z ∞
(c) there is not enough information to tell whether g(x) dx converges or diverges.

4. Let R be the region of all points (a, b) in the plane with 2a2 ≤ b ≤ 8a (i.e., the points
above the graph of y = 2x2 and below the line y = 8x).

(a) Set up a definite integral for the area of the region R in terms of the variable x.
(b) Set up a definite integral for the area of the region R in terms of the variable y.

5. Express as an integral the volume obtained by revolving the shaded region about the
(a) x-axis (b) the y-axis, and (c) the line y = −2. Assume that the curve at the top of
the shaded region is given by y = b(x − c)2 /c2 where b, c > 0.

6. Set up a definite integral for the arc length of the graph of y = 2 + x2 from x = 0 to
x = 2. You do not need to evaluate the integral.
7. Find the distance a particle travels from time t = 0 to t = π/2 if its coordinates
p at time
0
t are given parametrically by x = sin(t) and y = g(t) where g (t) = cos(t) sin(t).
8. Find the area of the shaded region in the figure below (it is the set of all points between
the origin and the curve r = θ and above the graph of y = |x|).

r=θ

9. (a) Find the polar coordinates of the point whose Cartesian coordinates are (1, 1).
(b) Find the polar coordinates of the point whose Cartesian coordinates are (−1, 1).
10. The density of oil in a circular oil slick on the surface of the ocean at a distance r meters
from the center of the slick is given by δ(r) = 50/(1 + r) kg/m2 . If the slick extends
from r = 0 to r = 10, 000m, set up an integral that could be used to find the exact
mass of oil in the slick.
11. A right cylindrical tank with radius 3 meters and height 1 meter is filled with a fluid
whose density is given by f (h) = 2 − h2 kg/m3 at height h meters from the bottom of
the tank. Find the mass of the fluid.
12. A spring has spring constant k. Its natural length is 5 feet long but it is under a load
so that it is only 3 feet long.

2
(a) Write down an integral for the work done in compressing the spring from three feet
long to only one foot long. Evaluate that integral (your answer will be in terms of
k).
(b) If in fact the work in part (i) is 15 foot-pounds, what is the numerical value of k?
Also give the units of k.
13. A spherical tank of radius 6 ft is half-full of oil weighing 55 lb/ft3 . Set up a definite
integral whose value is exactly the work done to pump all of the oil to the top of the
tank. Be sure to indicate the units of your answer, and what your variable of integration
means.
