Unit Plan
The whole reading process should take about 6 – 8 weeks.
1. Introduction to reading by Amos Oz (Lesson plan attached)
2. Introduction to the book:
Class Discussion:
 What do you think is Nelson's dream?
 How do you picture Nelson? (age, looks, background)
 Look at the book cover: What feelings does the picture arouse?
Pair Work:
Facts about AIDS – What do you know about AIDS?
Students relate to the facts in the attached page. (15 minutes)
Students check their answers in the attached information sheet. (15
minutes)
Class Discussion:
Did you find any surprising facts?
3. Homework:
Look for information about South Africa today.
What are the main issues that the country faces?
4. The Reading Process:
Sustained Silent reading – Devote 20 – 30 minutes once a week to
reading the book in class.
Reflect on the reading. (characters, family relationships, different
attitudes to the difficult life reality).
5. Students are required to read at home between 2-3 chapters every week.
6. Follow Up: (Post reading discussion)
 What was Nelson's dream?
 Did he achieve it?
 Which character did you like best? Why?
