A Siksika Nation family is in shock and disbelief


after their Halloween candy left them with a treat they
hadn’t bargained for.
Clifford Calfchild took his eight children and one
grandson trick-or-treating at 6 p.m. on Oct. 31 in a

The family had trick-or-treated in the area for many

On Saturday, however, Calfchild’s daughter Nicki
opened a small plastic bag with various candies in-
side, pulled out a chocolate bar and, upon taking a
bite, discovered a two-inch needle stuck inside the
chocolate. Two of his other children also found nee-
dles hidden in their Aero and Snickers bars.
“We’re still checking because we got quite a bit of
candy,” said Calfchild. “We’ve been going there for
years and nothing has ever happened like that. We

He added that the wrappers appeared to have been
opened and resealed using glue.
Calfchild reported the tampered candy to the RCMP,
who were also approached by another family about

According to a police report, inquiries in the area
where it was believed the candy was handed out re-

The first global conflict had claimed from 9 million to 13 million lives and caused
unprecendented damage. Germany had formally surrendered on November 11, 1918,
and all nations had agreed to stop fighting while the terms of peace were negotiated.
On June 28th, 1919, Germany and the Allied Nations (including Britain, France, Italy and
Russia) signed the Treaty of Versailles, thereby ending the war.

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in


1918, World War I fighting ceased. The war, which had raged on
throughout Europe for a little more than four years, claimed
the lives of more than nine million combatants and seven
million civilians. The Allies squared off against the Central
Powers of Germany and Austria-Hungary, and the conflict
involved nations from all over the world.
World War II was even more devastating. Ultimately,
100,000 Canadian soldiers lost their lives in these two
wars combined. It is in their honour - and in the name KINSMEN CLUB

Dead Air, a staged performance of radio plays,
was produced in Rosebud’s BMO Studio Stage,
Oct. 27.
“It was a Halloween variety show in the style
of an old-time radio play,” said co-producer Peter
Church, a Strathmore resident. “As a long-time fan
of the old radio shows from the ’30s and ’40s, I’ve
been producing podcasts and radio-style stage
plays in Toronto and Vancouver for almost a de-
