HW 3. New Separation Technologies

This assignment has the objective to evaluate the following ABET student’s outcomes:
i) Outcome C: Ability to design a system, a component, or a process to meet the desired
requirements within realistic restrictions (i.e., economic, environmental, social, political, ethical,
health, and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability)
ii) Outcome i: Recognize the ability to keep under a continuous self-learning.

The need to optimize industrial processes, in order to reduce either environmental or

economic costs, has driven the development of new technologies that seek to complement
or replace conventional unit operations. Regarding separation processes, there are several
technologies that continue to be developed, others that are at implementation or escalation
stage, and some are already replacing old operations.

Accordingly, the present work intends the students to make a state of the art of one of these
new technologies. In the following table, an operation has been assigned for each group:

Group Operation
1 Spray drying
2 Molecular sieves
3 Supercritical fluids
4 Ion Exchange
5 Adsorption
6 Crystallization
7 Carbon capture and utilization
8 Ionic liquids
9 Cryoconcentration
10 Spray drying

Besides books, at least five scientific papers from 2018 must be referenced. With the
information collected you will make a paper of maximum 5 pages, which have the following
items:

1. Tittle, name of the students and group number

2. Abstract of not more than 200 words
3. Theoretical fundament of the technology and its applications
4. Design aspects and equipment used for the technology and the implementation of
green engineering principles
5. One specific case of study obtained from one paper more recently than July of 2018
6. Conclusions
7. References

The homework is going to be graded according to the following rubric.
