Lions savour first win

Darley Cricket Club
By Todd Whelan

THE Darley Lions First XI have opened their account

for season 2018/19 with a convincing six wicket win over
Ballarat-Redan in last Saturday’s T-20 fixture at Darley Park.
After losing the toss and being sent into the field, the Lions
restricted the visitors to a challenging but gettable 117 at the
completion of their 20 overs.
Given the inconsistent returns with the bat this season, the
run chase was always going to ask a few questions of the
Lions top order.
In reply the Lions were off to a shaky start losing opener
Ryan Ali (3) with the score on nine.
Enter Hispatha Wickramasinghe.
The Sri Lankan born dashing allrounder joined Lachie
Herring at the crease to combine for a match winning 64-run
second wicket partnership. Herring’s near run-a-ball innings
of 40 came to an end with the score on 73 and the Lions
needing a further 45 runs to win. Wickramasinghe assumed
the controls after Mike Alexander (6) and Joel Cadman (3) fell
cheaply by taking it up to the visitors with an unbeaten 51
from just 40 balls that included five boundaries.
The Lions reached their target comfortably in the end with
10 balls to spare and six wickets in hand.
The win comes as a huge relief for Lions playing coach Mike Photos: Tim Saultry
Alexander.
“Sure, there’s no feeling like a winning feeling.” He said.
“We were pretty solid with bat and ball for the entire match,
it was really pleasing to see the effort from the boys.
“We really wanted this one (win) and I knew we weren’t far
away.
“I’m hoping the ‘W’ can be the start of something special for
us, I think we are on the right track,” Alexander said.
“Lachie (Herring) and Hispatha (Wickramasinghe) were
terrific with the bat and showed some real dash.”
Alexander said he was hoping that confidence and freedom
has a lasting effect on the group.
The Lions (9th - W1 L5) will host Golden Point (3rd - W4 L2)
this Saturday in the second round of T-20 matches at Darley
Park. Play starts at noon.

On the Road to ID18
VICTORIANS San Carlo and Motu Meteor put their names
firmly in the picture of the TAB Inter Dominion Pacing
Championship with Trots Country Cup victories.
While Motu Meteor was an eye-catcher in winning the
Weirs Supa IGA St Arnaud Pacing Cup for trainer-driver
Kerryn Manning, none dropped jaws liked the gelding af-
fectionately known as Murray.
San Carlo was extraordinary in winning the United Petro-
leum Yarra Valley Pacing Cup, sitting three and two-wide
outside highly-rated Im The Boss before muscling his way
to a stunning victory for trainer Stephen O’Donoghue and
driver Rebecca Bartley.
“He took himself to the front, and as soon as I pulled the
plugs he took off,” Bartley said.
“He was so strong right to the line. We’re super happy with
him.”
Yarra Valley’s cup day, held on Victoria Oaks Day, also fea-
tured a key trotting win for ID18 contender Sky Petite, who
saluted for Burrumbeet trainer Michael Stanley and young
reinsman Ryan Duffy.

Andy Gath’s top gun trotter Tornado Valley will likely have
one more hit-out before ID18 kicks off on December 1, with Gath revealed his other ID18 chance, Jet Roofing Kilmore over Diamonds N Cash.
