WEATHER 101 By: “Doppler” Dave Speelman

Saving Money
on Energy
Did you know that if every El Paso household
changed their five (5) highest-use light fixtures (or the light
bulbs in them) to Energy Star certified lighting; we would col-
lectively save more than $30 million (or $60/household)
every year in energy costs?

Because there is less daylight time and indoor lighting is used

more frequently, this fall season is a great time to think about increasing energy efficiency at
home by replacing traditional incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs
(CFLs).
Residential and commercial lighting upgrades are a high-return, low-risk in-
vestment. Energy Star certified lighting uses 66 percent less energy, lasts up
to ten times longer than traditional, incandescent lighting and the saving and
health benefits don’t end there. By installing new lighting technologies, such
as dimmers, photo sensors, occupancy sensors, and timers, which reduce the
amount of lighting used on a daily basis, we can further reduce the amount
of electricity consumed and therefore, reduce energy costs and the amount of air pollution
produced.

There are several sources of efficient lighting material and reports on the internet:

Doppler Dave’s Tip: While a CFL bulb is more expensive at the time of purchase, it more
than makes up for cost over its lifetime. A traditional 60-watt light bulb has a lifetime of
about 750 hours, but a CFL bulb will last for about 6,000 hours! Comparing purchase price,
energy costs, and the lifetime of CFL and traditional bulbs shows that a CFL bulb saves ap-
proximately 27 dollars over its lifetime. That means that replacing just the four most-used
bulbs can save a typical El Paso household about 108 dollars over the lifetime of the bulbs!

Weather Trivia:
Check out Energy Star’s CFL purchasing tips to find a bulb that will work well for your
home lighting conditions: http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=cfls.pr_tips_cfls.

A week after Ford drivers dominated at Kansas, Chevrolet racers

of first at Dover, second at Kansas and third at California. “One race down, still in the

And to make matters even worse for Ford, the three Ford drivers in the
Chase all experienced engine problems in the race. 2. Denny Hamlin –36 (finished eighth)
Matt Kenseth said the Ford failures may be tied to the recent efforts to He started 42nd but drove through the field to remain the chief threat to stop John-

where we started. It’s somewhat uplifting that we got out of here with a top-10.”
“They’ve been working really hard to give us more power to be compet-

Hyder parts with Wood Bros. A pit-road speeding penalty knocked him out of contention for the win, but he and
his team did a masterful job of minimizing the damage. He came back from 28th place
to score a top-10 finish.

most single-handedly,” Wood said. “It’s a shame we weren’t able to stay
together and finish what we started.” 7. Carl Edwards –162 (finished 34th)
An ignition problem sent him to the garage for 15 laps and put him in an underdog
position, points-wise. “We’ve got six races left and we’re 162 points back, so over six
races that’s not a lot of points per race, so I think we can do it.”

8. Jeff Burton –177 (finished 23rd)

For the second straight week, his car’s handling went away in the closing laps. Now
he’s going to have to rely on the misfortunes of others to move up in the standings.

9. Kyle Busch –187 (finished 35th)

One of the pre-Chase favorites to win the championship is now in a deep hole, thanks
to a blown engine at California on the heels of a crash with David Reutimann at Kansas.

10. Greg Biffle –215 (finished 41st)

The winner at Kansas never really got going at California. His Ford engine that was
so strong at Kansas failed him at Auto Club, effectively putting him out of the title hunt.
“We were trying hard to win the title and it isn’t going to happen this year.”

11. Matt Kenseth –241 (finished 30th)

Like his teammate Biffle, he suffered engine problems that spoiled a promising run
and ended any reasonable hope of a championship.

12. Clint Bowyer –247 (finished second)

His 150-point penalty from New Hampshire effectively took him out of the title hunt,
but he’s proving that his team belongs in the Chase. “We’re a race-winning team and
we need to go out and prove that that last one wasn’t a hoax.”
