Let It Jazz!
The Mid Norfolk Singers will be performing their Christmas concert at
7.30pm on 8th December at St Mary’s Church, Watton. This year we
have a jazz theme and we will be accompanied by a jazz trio. There is
also an opportunity for the audience to join in some traditional carols.
Tickets are available from Mullenger’s in the High Street (£10 or U18
£5). MNS have approximately 80 members and rehearse in Dereham on
Thursday evenings and perform a wide range of music - recently
including Bach B Minor Mass in Norwich Cathedral. New members are
always welcome (especially tenors!!) and more information can be

Office is to be at
Watton Edwards
News

It is with great pride and pleasure that we
are able to announce the Re-opening of
the Post Office within Watton Edwards
News at 50 High Street.
The opening hours of the post office will
be Mon-Sat 6am - 5.30pm and Sun
6.30am - 1pm.
Having moved from London to Watton 3
years ago and taken over Edwards
Newsagents, we feel immensely proud
to serve the Watton community with this
added service in the town.
Getting the post office in the town is a
big relief to the people of Watton the
surrounding villages. As a shopkeeper
having no post office since end of May
has left a big gap in the High Street.
Bringing the post office back onto the
High Street will hopefully bring more
people back into Watton to use the local
services which the high street has to
offer. Such services like the post office
are very crucial for the town especially
for the elderly customers who are unable
to travel further afield.
Having always been a community
person, my family and I feel the
reopening of the post office is in the right
place, on the High Street where it
belongs, and we shall continue to provide
an excellent customer service and go the
extra mile for our customers.
My wife, Chandni, has been appointed as
the Postmistress and we both look
forward to the opening early in the New
Year.
We look forward to seeing all old and
new customers in the shop to use the post
office.

Charity Race
Night
A charity Race Night is being held on
Saturday 8th December 2018 at
Thompson Community Hall in
memory of Stewart Dickson.
After a long battle with cancer
Stewart sadly passed away in
July. Stewart would have been
celebrating his 59th birthday on
December 6th. He was passionate
about horse racing, was a regular
in Corals of Watton and was a
member at Fakenham Race
Course, he also attended meetings
around the county with his wife
Alison.
Therefore we thought it would be
a fitting tribute to organise such
an event and something he would
have loved himself. The money
raised will be split between two
charities, The Big C and Watton
Thursday Club.
Tickets are available from

What an amazing autumn term we are
enjoying at Watton Westfield Infant and
Nursery School! All the new children
are settling in beautifully and lots of
busy learning is going on all around the

developed the science portfolio last year
and who has handed the baton over to
Miss Payne to continue. The award was

Here we are on the last lap to the New Year,
but the Autumn has still only just
surrendered, with the colours that we usually
associate with September still arriving, and
shrubs that shouldn’t be budding until
February already springing to life.
But however the seasons don’t seem to sort
themselves out, for most of us it’s business as
usual, and the annual presentation of the
Budget had the usual effect of pleasing some
while disappoint-ing others. The trouble is
that there are too many causes that are really
deserving and the Chancellor can only satisfy
a few at any moment. Obviously he could
satisfy every deserving faction by raising our
taxes sufficiently, but that would trigger an
election and we would be back to square one,
as the saying goes. (Incidently where did that
saying come from ?)
Was it from the early days of radio football
commentaries, when such broadcasts were
supported by a diagram in the Radio Times
showing a representation of the pitch, divided
into eight numbered squares, ? From time to
time during the commentary an extra voice
would be heard giving the number of a square
to indicate the whereabouts of the ball.
Of course the outstanding moments of
November concerned the marking of the
centenary of the Armistice at the end of the
Great War, and we all observed the custom of
remembering the fallen with a period of silence.
But a new way of honouring the deceased has
taken place over the last two or three years, in
which people pay their respects, not in
silence, but with a period of applause.
To traditionalists this may seem strange, but a
football crowd, for instance, applauding in
honour of an old favourite does seem to be a
more sincere and personal tribute than mere
silence, though this, of course, is a matter of
opinion.
On a completely different level of mourning,
the gradual demise of the big High Street
stores continues, with well-known names of
such as Debenhams and John Lewis among
those that seem to be under mounting
As we all know, it is OUR fault, because we
have shifted our allegiance to on-line
shopping, which allows us to buy from the
comfort of our armchairs, often at reduced
prices and with next day delivery. This
means an end to searching for parking spaces,
as well as carrying heavy purchases around.
This ‘lazy’ method of shopping has led to
many reports of the demise of our shopping
centres, but luckily there are still a great
many of us who still like to patronise our
smaller traders, so that Watton High Street,
for instance, is still a vibrant entity, though
like other local towns, we still rely on the
district councils not to succumb to the
temptation of ending the availability of free
parking. On that subject I am reminded of a
recent occasion in Swaffham when I was
approached by a worried lady who had failed
to find where to pay her parking fee. She was
dumb-founded when I explained that parking
was, in fact, free. Obviously she was a
stranger to these parts !
And good news at last for Watton folks with
the imminent opening of a new Post Office,
though the actual date is uncertain at the time
of writing.
Now they say that all good things eventually
come to an end, and writing in this paper has
certainly given me great pleasure over the last
eighteen years, but circumstances compel
changes, and the perceptive reader will have
noticed a different word in the title at the
head of this column.
So it is with great regret that I have to say, not
just the usual Good afternoon, but Goodbye . . .
Ed: I would like to pay tribute to Orbiter for
his many, many contributions to The Wayland
News over the years. When Orbiter first told
me the sad news of his retirement, we looked
back and realised that he had been writing
for The Wayland News for over 18 years,
providing an insightful commentary on all
things, in and around our area.
As Orbiter said, “. . . all good things
eventually come to an end.” Well, this is one
ending I regret more than I can say.
Thank you Orbiter, It has been a pleasure

In your garden
With Lotta Potts
So here we are at the end of the year. Well,
not quite yet but it’s an arresting sentence so
now I have your attention let’s proceed. In
real time I am writing in the middle of
November and we have just had a shock as
the weather that has been so mild, almost
balmy, until the end of the third week when
things turned to where they should be; so we
feel freezing cold. We are told to get used to
it as winter is approaching from the east and
we know what that means. The pundits who
claim to have a long-distance forecast say we
are going to have snow, lots of it, for weeks
on end but are a bit vague as to when. They
may well be right as we can all remember the
‘beast from the east’ last winter. I guess I am
trying to convince myself that bad weather
occurs and some people actually enjoy it.
From a gardening point of view it means less
to do and a few decent, hard frosts will kill
off a lot of pests.
I just looked at December 2015 notes and
this was very similar in weather to what we
have experienced this year. Lots of flowers
were in bloom – fuchsias, delphiniums,
marigolds and primroses. No primroses this
November but the others, not forgetting
roses, are all still hanging on. I am also
looking forward to the Winter Beauty
clematis flowering soon as it’s already in
bud. You have to look for them amongst the
foliage as this variety produces larger leaves
than the usual clematis ones. The buds
resemble mini snowdrops. The sarcocca is
beginning to flower as well and we should
get some scent soon. These are just two of
the flowers that will help any bees that find
themselves out and about when they
shouldn’t be and bring some lightness to
what is essential a dull part of the year.
Others to think about to bring a little cheer
would include good old viburnum
bodnantense with its pink flowers and
delightful scent (this is subjective as I love
the scent but am sure others don’t). This is
deciduous but in mild winters may well hang
on to its dark green leaves tinted with pink or
red. It also seems to thrive in all sorts of
conditions. Helleborus niger, the Christmas
rose is lovely in white. Don’t rely on ones
you already have as they may flower earlier
or later. Go to the nursery or garden centre a
week or two before Christmas and buy one
with lots of tight buds. That should do the
trick. Hollies are good value although unless
self-fertile you need two to berry. Irritatingly
I have three in my garden, two plain dark
green ones which came as presents from
birds and a variegated one I bought. So far
no good as they haven’t produced a berry
between them. I would have to buy two
more to ensure berries another year as I have
no idea if mine are male or female. Maybe I
should settle for one I have pictured in my
favourite book: JC van Tol which has the
added attraction of smooth leaves. Some
bulbs such as crocus laevigatus (no idea as I
have never seen one in a catalogue) and
Sternbergia lutea which resembles a dainty
daffodil in glorious yellow (lutea gives the
game away).
As far as the practical things are concerned
this month is governed by the weather and
conditions underfoot perhaps more than
any other. As far as the lawn is concerned,
if it is dry and mild it will carry on
growing and it will need mowing. It will
also be possible to get on it to tidy the beds
around it and remove the (hopefully) last
of the leaves from plants and the grass. On
the other hand if it is frosted or soggy keep
off. If the borders are accessible from
paths carry on with the winter digging if
you started early, or save it for after
Christmas exercise. If you don’t dig then
lightly fork over the vacant soil and add
organic matter. Just about anything will do –
well-rotted manure, compost which can be
home-made or from finished pots or grow-
bags, topsoil from parts of the garden you
might re-develop. The worms will do the
rest and the soil will be much improved for
next season.
Then there’s the really miserable housework
outside. Clean up any slippery paths. Wash
and sort pots and trays so they can be stored
for next year’s sowing. Tidy and clean the
tools and either put them back into the store
you already have or put some racks or hooks
on the shed walls. Clean up the shed and
find all those small tools you replaced in the
summer. Come on we’ve all done it! Get
the shears and secateurs sharpened and you’ll
be ready to go. All this used to be an excuse
for the men in the house to disappear when
washing up was ready to be done but now
we have equality maybe the women could
decide to sow the onion seeds on Boxing
Day. What do you think?
The nicest part of December is the shopping.
Whether you circle town carparks for hours
to get to the high street (which we are
encouraged to do) or cave in and do it all on
line there are nice things to be had to give to
our nearest and dearest. Better yet go to the
sheds and garden centres where there is
usually space to park and get the tree and
plants for indoors. Then spot the ideal plants
for winter baskets and containers. Then get
it all in the car and there you have the perfect
excuse for disappearing to plant up. The
downside of winter container gardening is
that they still need dead-heading. If you are
buying plants for indoors, Poinsettia being
the traditional one, don’t buy one that has
been sitting outside in a cold wind. They
will not do very well once they are put in a
warm environment at home and were
probably set out straight from a sheltered
existence in a greenhouse.
So the shed is tidy, the planting done, the
leaves cleared from the lawn and border
plants for leafmould now what? If the
weather is dire get a nice glass of something
and a pile of catalogues. We have probably
all got lots of them whether we asked or not
and next season’s veg and flowers can be
planted. A good idea is to keep a list handy
of what you want and the supplier. It can be
quite surprising what differences there are
between the seedsmen on price and size of
pack. As most of them have the same
products try and get them all together in one.
This might seem blindingly obvious but by
the third glass of something nice it can get
confusing. If the weather is kind take the
glass outside and have a good look round at
what there is and make a plan to have
something growing this time next year.
So there you have it. Not much to do, not
much of that very exciting but look forward
to a well-earned rest by the fire and a good
read. Have a very Happy Christmas.
Oops nearly forgot – keep weeding

District Book Group
The book discussed on 17th October was
The Wildflowers by Harriet Evans.The
Wildflowers tells the story of the Wilde
family, famous golden acting couple Tony
and Althea and their children Ben and Cord.
From the outside the family appears to have
everything, glamour, fame and the perfect
family life especially to Madeleine whose
upbringing couldn’t be more different. Every
year the family spends the summer at the
Bosky, their holiday home and that’s where
they meet Mads. Secretly she keeps a diary
detailing information about the Wilde family
as she observes them from afar until she
finds herself taken into the fold, becoming
part of the family. It is this diary that is the
catalyst for the story that enfolds, seeing the
reader taken on a journey across the decades.
Originally told from Cord’s perspective the
story flits between the past and present
throughout, often changing from chapter to
chapter. As we are given more detail about
the family we discover they are far from
perfect. In fact, their lives are filled with
scandal, infidelity, lies and secrets which are
cleverly unearthed as the book progresses
along with the repercussions that are felt
throughout the years.
This long, complex novel, with all the
outward appearance of ChickLit, proved a
popular choice, full of surprises. One or
two members found the movement back
and forth in time and place confusing but
then agreed these factors were its strength.
It was long enough to have mystery in the
background even though we were not
always aware of its existence until the end.
The central character, famous actor
Anthony, Tony, Ant Wilde with variations
on his name helping to portray his age at
various times moves from helpless child,
orphaned by WWII, to famous actor then
rather sad older man via being a fun loving
good father and frequent lecher which we
all suspected were determined by his
earlier life. One member defined him as ‘a
modern Peter Pan’ always wanting his
youth and constantly looking for his
mother. It was agreed that the characters
were very well drawn as were the
situations and backgrounds. The author
gave an excellent description of the
atmosphere and terror of the Blitz although
not born until 1974 thus the book was well
researched. It led to a discussion on how
much we are influenced by our genes,
upbringing and experiences, in other words
the question of nature or nurture remains
unsolved for this group, if not researchers
and experts. It was agreed that we found the
ending very satisfactory, with clever drawing
together of most of tha loose ends and the
suggestion of some sort of tranquility for
those remaining.
The book discussed on 21st November was
Dark Fire by CJSansom.It is 1540, and
Matthew Shardlake, the lawyer renowned as
“the sharpest hunchback in the courts of
England,” is pressed to help a friend’s young
niece who is charged with murder. Despite
threats of torture and death by the rack, the
girl is inexplicably silent. Shardlake is about
to lose her case when he is suddenly granted
a reprieve,one that will ensnare him in the
dangerous schemes of Thomas Cromwell,
Henry VIII’s feared vicar-general. In
exchange for two more weeks to investigate
the murder, Shardlake accepts Cromwell’s
dangerous assignment to find a lost cache of
“dark fire,” a legendary weapon of mass
destruction. Cromwell, out of favour since
Henry’s disastrous marriage to Anne of
Cleves, is relying on Shardlake to save his
position at court, which is rife with
treasonous conspiracies.
This was a very popular choice and enjoyed
by everybody. The appreciation was
increased by some of the group going to a
presentation by CJ Sansom in Norwich when
he launched the latest in the series Tombland
set in the City. Comments about Dark Fire
included: excellent description of people and
places; the incredible depiction of the scent
and atmosphere of Medieval London;
fascinating unusual aspects such as
Shardlake’s short journeys on his horse
which raised the question of stabling in
London in the 16th C; the use of the river for
travel and communicatiom; the dreadful
treatment of Elizabeth the young girl
Shardflake is defending; the horror of the
well investigated and the precarious situation
Thomas Cromwell is obviously in, like so
many politicians concerned for his own
survival,The concensus was that in addition
to the case which Shardlake has to resolve
this is an excellent, well researched source of
information on Tudor London post Monastic
Dissolution.
Our meeting on 19th December will take
place at Kings Café where we will partake of
afternoon tea whilst sharing some favourite
extracts of poetry and prose, some seasonal,
others not. For our January meeting we plan
to read The Trouble with Goats and Sheep
by Joanna Cannon.

Getting Rid Of
Father Christmas

“Unbelievable!” Carole exclaims sipping
her sherry, “Only three days to Christmas,
where has the last year gone?”
“I know! Scary!” George replies, “I’ll go
and get the tree and decorations in from the
garage, it shouldn’t take long to put them
up. I believe we’re going for ‘simple but
effective’ this year, aren’t we?”
“Oh yes, gone are the days of a million
paper chains across the ceiling,
everything’s instant now!”
He comes in shivering bringing the cold air
with him. Wedged under one arm is the
long cardboard box containing the due to
become shimmering, white Christmas tree
with LED lights that change colour. In the
other hand he carries a black plastic bin
bag full of stuff, which he plonks by the
French windows.
“Brr! It’s started to hail and snow out
there!” He says while unloading the scarlet
bells, the pretty gold and silver twirly
chains and the green, imitation holly,
placing them roughly where they went last
year, awaiting to be fixed into place with
blu-tak. Out comes the nodding and
singing Father Christmas which he sets on
the mantelshelf and presses the start button.
This sets it off with Slade’s, ‘So here it is,
Merry Christmas, everybody’s having fun’
he laughs and sings along with it.
“Oh no, not that thing again, I can’t stand
it, I hate that ruddy thing!” Carole moans
but grins at her husband’s singing. He
knows she means what she says about the
Father Christmas.
“It was a present from your sister and it
makes people laugh.....even you, admit it!”
George retorts.
“I know, I know......but it’s so irritating
and.......and vulgar, it drives me mad! Can’t
we lose it or accidentally break it or
something?”
They work for a couple of hours making
the house look Christmassy, sipping sherry
and pausing to gaze at the swirling snow
politely tapping against the window. After
reaching up and battling to make the
decorations stick where they obstinately
keep falling down from, they sit and talk
about her mother. Her mother has had a
stroke and is severely affected by it, but is
coming home from hospital for Christmas.
Carole and the whole family are very upset
by Nana’s condition and all are hoping it
will be good for the elderly lady, to be with
family.
Christmas day arrives and her mother’s
wheelchair is being manoeuvred by
George, placing her near to the table. The
family dart glances at their grandmother
who sits at the table like a puppet waiting
for its strings to be pulled in order come to
life. Dinner is cooked and about to be
served and George starts ceremoniously to
carve the turkey, everyone yells at him to
get a move on. That exquisite smell, the
aroma like no other, of the Christmas roast
torments their taste buds making them all
very hungry.......is Nana hungry, too? They
ask? Nothing. As each Christmas cracker is
pulled they squeal in delight and watch for
a reaction from her. Nothing. They make
jolly, silly conversation and try to bring
Nana into it by asking her questions, they
pay her constant attention. Nothing. Amid
the odour of gunpowder from the crackers
mixed with the rich spice of the Christmas
pudding, they relate the same old chestnuts
that always come up at Christmas. The
stories that make everyone screech with
laughter, despite having heard them a
thousand times over. Nothing from Nana.
The lips that couldn’t stop talking, are
silent.
The memory (even if somewhat
annoyingly) that never forgot a thing, can’t
remember her own name.
The sharp, brown eyes that never missed a
trick, see nothing.
The strong, working hands that never
stopped cleaning and cooking, rest in her
lap, still as a shop window mannequin.
The legs that were forever rushing about,
hang like two pale flower stems, still as a
calm sea below her skirt.
After dinner they retire to the lounge for
the Queen’s speech at three o’clock. Carole
chats to her mother as she wheels her in
and positions her with a good view of the
television. They all scramble for armchairs
and seats as George goes to the mantelshelf
and presses the button on the infamous
nodding and singing Father Christmas.
“Oh, no! Not again!” Carole protests.
“That’s definitely going in the bin after this
Christmas!”
The noisy toy drowns all conversation so
they are forced to listen once more as it
blasts out, ‘So here it is Merry Christmas,
everybody’s having fun!’ As per normal it
makes everyone laugh. Suddenly Nana’s
eyes light up and she laughs with them,
moves her feet a little and tries to clap her
hands to the music. They are all stunned
into silence. Tentatively they resume
singing and laughing with her, overjoyed at
this miracle. Nana does remember, does
see, does move her hands and feet even if
only a little. Is she trying to mouth the
words?
Carole hugs her mother, laughing and
crying at the same time, “That ruddy
Father Christmas........ is going nowhere
near the bin! It stays as long as it likes!”

ten top tips to feel good without a big
spend this season.

local branch based at the Fountain of Life
Church, Ashill, wants people to be smart
about the festivities rather than get into
financial trouble.

windows are full of adverts trying to
convince us that Christmas is about buying
and impressing.
“However, encouraged by campaigns by
Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis and

“It’s tempting to take out credit and pay
it off through the coming year but none
of us knows what 2019 will bring. So,
our advice is simple: have the Christmas
you can afford. It takes all the stress out
of it and there’s loads you can do that is
more affordable.”

games night for mates.

Lancaster House
Opens its Doors
Getting out and about and involved with
the local community can be difficult at the
best of times, and even more so for
residents in a care home. In Watton,
Lancaster House is opening its doors and
inviting the community in. From this
autumn the residents have been joined
regularly by volunteers from the area. This
includes Fitsteps instructor Aimee whose
usual clientele may be from a younger
generation; but she has adapted the steps to
suit all abilities even involving those
wanting to tap their feet from an armchair!
She participated in a ‘Dancing for Dignity’
fundraising event held by the home in
October to support the organisation Dignity
in Care campaign.
Watton Country Market also attended the
homes first Summer Fete, which was open
to just friends and family this year, but the
home is looking forward to inviting the
whole community next year. The Watton
Country Market enjoyed their time so
much that they come into the home on a
regular basis, this is open to anyone in the
area (from December dates will be
alternate Fridays starting on the 14th at
1330)- so please come in to browse their
selection of products, and produce! The
home would love to hear from you if there
is anything you can offer on a voluntary
basis, particularly interested in finding a
group of children who are able to come in
on a regular basis. Please call 01953

Great Hockham
Gardening Club
Climate Change. For our November
meeting we welcomed Jim Paine of Walnut
Tree Nurseries. Jim and his wife Clare have
been running their enterprise for about 20
years. The nursery specialises in flowering
dogwoods and crab apples, but there are
many other types of plant in their range
both on site and on line. Jim came to talk to
us about climate change. His talk was
complemented with some very informative
slides.
Jim started by clarifying a possible
confusion between climate and weather:
weather is the atmospheric stuff happening
at a particular time, whereas climate is the
averaging out of those different features of
the weather into a stable pattern over a
particular period. The United States
Climate Data Center regards a 30 year
period as the length of time over which data
can be accumulated to arrive at an
‘average’ to determine the climate. Any
anomalies in any period will simply be a
variation in the weather. However, if there
are sufficient anomalies that result in the
averages changing - over a 30 year period -
then that may be considered as a change in
the climate.
The realisation of the possibly of climate
change can be traced back to a number of
people including the following: the
mathematician Joseph Fourier (1768-1830)
wondered why a planet doesn’t keep
heating up as it receives sunlight. He
reasoned that some of the heat absorbed
was being re-emitted until a state of
equilibrium was arrived at. He thought that
the atmosphere acted like a sheet of glass
over a box, a well-known experiment of the
time. Fourier thus introduced the concept of
the ‘greenhouse effect’. John Tyndal (1820
-1893) made discoveries in the studies of
infrared radiation and its effect on the
physical properties of air. Svante Arrhenius
(1859 – 1927) developed a theory to
explain ice ages and their relationship to
atmospheric carbon dioxide. He concluded
that human production of the gas could
cause global warming.
From this and subsequent work it became
possible to calculate the amount of heat an
object (like a rock or a planet) would
absorb, so increasing its temperature. It
could also be calculated how much heat it
would radiate away, thus reducing its
temperature. When heat in equals heat out
the temperature of that object becomes
stable. When the calculations were carried
out to arrive at a temperature for the planet
Venus it worked out to -33°C. Sadly for the
calculation, Venus is actually +427C. The
Earth should be -22°C, it is +22°C. Mars
should be -57°C, it is -33°C. These
contradictions can be attributed to their
respective atmospheric proportions of
greenhouse gasses, mostly carbon dioxide:
Venus 96.5%, Earth 0.04%, Mars 95.97%.
There are other factors, but making changes
to the carbon dioxide levels will have a
calculateable effect.
The Sunlight reaching the surface of the
Earth is 90% visible (high energy) light,
which is able to pass through the glass of,
say, a greenhouse. This will heat up
anything inside the greenhouse. Those
heated contents will then re-emit non
visible (low energy infra red) ‘light’, much
as a house radiator emits heat. Infrared
radiation is much less able to pass through
glass. Again, when heat in equals heat out
the temperature if the interior becomes
stable. It’s worth remembering that high
energy does not mean high intensity. High
energy light is short wavelength; low
energy light is long wavelength, regardless
of the wattage.
For about 200 years, since the industrial
revolution, increasing amounts of carbon
dioxide have been released into the
atmosphere. Using historical information it
is possible to construct a mathematical

model that fits the data. The validity of the
model can be checked by making a
‘hindcast’. That is, feeding data into the
model, running it backwards and seeing
how accurately the result matches the
known historical climate. When the model
has been tweaked to make it fit the past it
can then be run forward to make a forecast.
The predictions of these models have been
well publicised.
Project Drawdown has calculated the top
100 things we might do (as opposed to stop
doing) to decrease the amount of
greenhouse gasses we put into the
atmosphere and thereby reduce global
warming. These are the top 10 with the
calculated number of gigatons (a billion
tons) of CO2 saved: New non greenhouse
gas type refrigeration fluids – 89, onshore
wind energy production – 85, reduce waste
– 71, a plant rich diet – 66, tropical forest
restoration – 61, educating girls – 60,
family planning – 60, solar farms – 37,
silvopasture (combining forestry with
animal pasture (see The Archers on Radio
4)) – 31 and roof-top solar panels – 25
Jim concluded a very interesting and
thought provoking talk with a question and
answer session, or perhaps a discussion
would be more accurate. He is developing
presentations of other gardening related

are not around for his own safety.

Stan’s Walk: At the last Parish Council
Meeting concerns were raised by a

working together to manage the situation.

Legion Festival
of Remembrance
I know a few people were
disappointed that Watton branch
standard was not on parade in Watton
on the 11th of November for the
centenary remembrance, but here, in
his own words, is what it means to be
selected to represent Watton at The
Royal Albert Hall, let alone at the
100th anniversary. (John Daly

Many moons ago whilst I was still
working as a postman, a good friend
of mine Alan Chilvers who was at the
time the standard bearer for the
Watton branch of the RBL got the
honour to represent Watton at the
Royal Albert Hall, and I remember
thinking at the time wow that must be
wonderful, and so was sparked a
thought a germ of an idea that was
still far off for I was not even in the
Legion, but there we go.
Fast forward a dozen or more years,
by then I had been in the RBL for a
year or so enjoying the camaraderie
and being nominated as deputy,
stand in, standard bearers mate, I
had done a few duties with the
standard by then, and following a
couple of beers I got talking with
another friend (as you do) about
how the branch was doing at the
time and how we go forward from
here, amongst other things the
subject of carrying the standard
came up and was it possible that
(the germ of an idea) and wouldn’t
it be fantastic if we could go to the
Albert Hall, and then wouldn’t it be
something if as deputy bearer I just
might carry the standard, and what
about some icing on the cake how
about marching at the Cenotaph on
the Sunday morning following it,
now you have to remember it was
after a couple of beers and so the
idea just kind of floated at the back
of my mind.
Then came the time to apply for
tickets to go to the festival, it
suddenly became a little more
serious that it was a possibility (a
small one) that we might go, now it
came to pass that the branch had
been doing a lot of work for the
RBL at county level through John
and Helen Daly, Chairman and
Secretary respectively and it was
through them both that the
application was made, this all took
place about 6 months or so ago and
the waiting process began, now I
don’t know if, what, or how, if any
pressure or arm twisting went on,
alI I know is that I received an e-
mail telling me that our applications
were successful, now it is at this
stage that I must say a huge thanks
to Alan who is the main standard
bearer for the branch for allowing
me to do this great honour and
privilege to represent Watton in
London even more so as it was the
centenary anniversary as well.
I got a little exited and I think looking
back that I must have told everyone I
knew about it, I just hope it didn’t
sound like showing off or anything
like that, if it did please everyone
forgive me cause I’m still a little boy
at heart and going to London to see
the Queen means a great deal to me,

Inner Wheel
Packs Them In!
Since my last report the two events
planned to take place in the Queens
Hall have happened and, I must express
my thanks and those of all our club for
the amazing support they received from
our community.
The first on Friday, October 26th was
'Blooming Marvellous' a flower
demonstration by well known local
demonstrator, Brenda Tubb. So many
ladies came to enjoy a wonderful
afternoon as Brenda made a number of
beautiful arrangements in front of our
eyes and then filled the stage with all
those she had made earlier, they made
an amazing display and were the reason
why so much money was taken by the
raffle as all 20 arrangements went as
prizes to the lucky winners.
It was then time for tea, and, as ever,
our ladies went to town and produced a
superb spread of sandwiches, savouries
and cakes which were greatly enjoyed.
The whole afternoon was a great
success and £773.50 was added to our
charity funds, some of which will be
distributed to the particular charities we
support at Christmas time, including
The Thursday Club, The Salvation
Army and St Martin's Housing Trust .

district raised close to £11000, and
donations are still coming in.

Legion members and other volunteers
who braved the weather to collect in
the streets of Watton; members and
friends of the Rotary Club and Inner

the Army Cadets who manned the
stand at Tesco, and the Tesco
manager and staff for welcoming our
collectors onto their premises; and
most of all, to everyone who gave so
generously in support of the appeal.

splendid bedecked with large poppies.

the Wives many which expressed the
love and fears that those left behind feel
when their menfolk go off to serve their
country. I thought 'Bring him Home'
from Les Miserables was particularly
poignant as I am sure every mother,
wife, sister and girlfriend must feel this
sentiment. There were lighter moments
with Mr Sandman and a Vera Lynn
medley from their new album released
for the Armistice.
The stage was shared with The West
End Waiters, popular and familiar to
many in the audience with their own
brand of songs and humour from an
earlier era. Especially for this occasion

It was a splendid event with many
people expressing their enjoyment
and thanks for the opportunity to
mark the occasion of the 100th

Armistice Day visit to St Ethelbert’s
church at Wretham.
On the 100th anniversary of the end
of the First World War, architect
Matthew Pease and his son Felix from
Kinross, Scotland, and his brother
Adrian Pease from Tacolneston in
Norfolk, saw for the first time the
French grave marker and photograph
of the 20 year old officer who was
killed on July 1st 1917 and lies at a
military cemetery at Ferme-Olivier in
France.
He was the son of Saxton and Celia
Noble of Wretham Hall, originally
built by Sir Andrew Noble in 1911.
The two brothers, who are great great
grandsons of Sir Andrew, were shown
anniversary of The Armistice.
Our ladies would like to say a very big
thank you to everyone who attended
our events and who contributed so
generously to our raffle at the Flowers
and the bucket collection at the concert.

Christmas at The
Dragonfly Gallery
By the time you read this, the
Dragonfly Gallery will be decorated
ready for Christmas with lots of lovely
art and craft work on offer. The last
exhibition of 2018 is called Deck the
Halls. It will feature Art and Crafts
from local Artists and Crafts people,
there is bound to be something that
takes your fancy for a gift for Great
Aunt Flo or Granny, possibly, even for
Grandpop too, so do call in and see us
and have a leisurely look around. The
gallery is open from Monday to Friday
from 10am to 4pm and Saturday
morning 10am to 1pm.
A date for your diary is, Saturday 15th
December 2018 when we will be
holding a mince pies and Mulled Wine
morning. If Mulled Wine is not to your
taste or you are driving, tea and coffee
will also be available. Come and
celebrate Christmas with us that
morning, we would love to see you.

Ovington Ladies Group Celebrate 40th Anniversary
The Group are celebrating our 40th
anniversary. We held our first meeting on
29th November 1978. We still have one
of our original ladies still coming to all
our meetings.
We meet once a month in the village hall
and have speakers sometimes, an annual
Watton Country
Market
The Country Market are now in full
production of all your favourite
Christmas Treats and Essentials. We
also have a great selection of hand
crafted items that could make the perfect
present. There is still time to give us an
order for a personalised item and you can
talk to our team of producers to discuss
your requirements. We are always
willing to go the ‘extra mile’ to ensure
that you get exactly the right item.
You may even find it useful to come in
and have a chat if you are running out
of ideas as we may be able to make
some useful suggestions to help you
Watton Evening WI
The Annual Meeting of Watton Evening
WI took place on Thursday 8th November.
Essentially a business meeting, it was,
nevertheless, filled with friendship and
pleasure.
'Fidget Cushions', made by the Craft Group
were presented to Laura Osborn of
Buckingham Lodge in Watton (pictured).
'Fidget Cushions' are made from heavily
textured and patterned fabrics, cut and
stitched into patchwork patterns, they
enable Dementia people to have something
to hold and keep their fingers busy, which
proves valuable to them. These were a
pleasure to make and well received on
behalf of Buckingham Lodge.
As the evening progressed Carol Robeson,
outgoing secretary, gave a very
comprehensive report on the year's activities,
reminding us all of what a busy time there
had been. Newer members too, were able to
realise what an active WI this is.
Anita, our retiring President, gave thanks to
the membership and particularly the
committee who had assisted her in the tasks
dinner in a local pub, and one of our
favourite get togethers is the put walk
usually round Thompson finishing up at
The Chequers where Richard always
gives us a delicious meal.
We still have at least one fundraiser held
in a committee members home when we
solve the problem!
We are looking forward to participating
in the festivities for the Christmas Lights
Switch On on the 25th November. There
will be a full range of our usual products
for sale on the day and we are also
running our ‘Resting Point
Refreshments’ so you can break your
journey from one end of the town to the
other with a freshly made cuppa and a
slice of something nice to go with it!
Cannot end this report without
mentioning that Den’s Pickled Onions
have been a huge success this year. If
you have not already tried them, you may
still be able to get your hands on a jar,
and there may still be some samples
available for you to try if you call into
the market. No guarantee that they will
necessary in running such a group. Anita
was presented with a bouquet as a mark of
thanks and appreciation. The membership
is also grateful to the whole committee who
completed their tasks so diligently.
A new Committee was elected, thankfully
with some previous members who will be
able to guide the new ones in the ways of
the WI. Under the guidance of our new
President, Hazel Gillingham, we look
forward to the coming year.
It may have been noticed in town during
the period prior to
Remembrance Sunday,
a number of handmade
poppies. Many of
these were sold in
'Adcocks' with kind
permission of Paul and
the sum raised was
£235-85 and passed
onto to the British
Legion to do more of
their sterling work.
As always in the WI
there is much to look
forward to. In the next
welcome husband's, partners and friends
along. We are always looking for new
members and would love to have some
younger members so that the group can
continue for many years to come.

Dance-Away at Watton Society

Watton Sociiety held its AGM with John

retirements, was elected en bloc. The

it is very important that this is completed
and returned it gives every person in
Watton a voice.
A very interesting and informative
evening. Our next meeting is on
Wednesday 19th December at 7.45pm at
the Watton Christian Community Centre,
when "Chanter's Jigge" will entertain us
at our Christmas Festivities with mulled
wine and mince pies. £6. members and £8
non members. All Welcome.

John Rushmer, his wife Sally and dog Syd came
to our meeting in October to tell us all about
Guide dogs for the Blind. Syd, who is John’s
dog, sat very patiently through the talk. As John
said he has heard it all before! We were told
that dogs have been helping to lead people with
sight loss through the centuries. There is
evidence dating back to AD79 in Roman
Herculaneum, depicting dogs leading people.
Although in 1819 there was a publication about
training dogs it was not taken up until WW1
when a doctor, in 1916, set up the first guide
dog training school. Dorothy Eustis who lived
in Switzerland, trained German Shepherd dogs
for military and police work. She travelled to
Germany to see the guide dog training and
wrote an article in a magazine about it. Morris
Frank a blind man after hearing of this article
wrote to her and offered to help her set up the
training as he wanted one of these dogs. From
this they set up Seeing Eye dogs. This inspired
Miss Muriel Crooke and Mrs. Rosamund Bond
to start the same in Britain. So began Guide
dogs for the Blind.
Syd, a Labrador/retriever cross is John’s dog.
He came to John when he was 17 months old
after going through his training. The first year
Syd was with a puppy walker being socialised
learning various social skills, then he went to a
trainer for 19 weeks foundation training and
then with a mobility trainer until eventually he
was matched with John. John also had training
living in a hotel for 16 days to get to know the
dog and to work together. When at the end of
the training he qualified, John had to pay 50p
for the legal contract agreeing to accept all the
Guide dog rules – 2 walks a day, plus 2 free
runs a week. The object is to make the person
and dog one unit. The Guide Dog association
does not receive government funding. Not all
dogs make the grade for various reasons but
some go on to become buddy dogs for children
with sight loss or emotional problems. A very
informative and enjoyable talk and a pleasure to
meet Syd.
There will be no speaker for December. The
speaker for January will be Julian Horn with
‘Why, What and Where Watton started’.
We will be going to The Golf club for
Christmas lunch on Friday 30 November. Our
Christmas party will be held on Wednesday 5
December at the Watton Christian Community
Centre.

West Norfolk
Aviation
Society
On Tuesday 6th of October, in the
cosy confines of the Mundford
Bowls Club, the West Norfolk
Aviation Society proudly presented,
for the first time in the history of
the club, a lady speaker who
captivated her mostly male
audience. This elegant and eloquent
lady, Jocelyn C. Blakey, gave a
brief but intensive insight into the
life of her brave and adventurous
father, Roger Maw, who, being the
son of a gentleman farmer, expected
to follow in his father’s footsteps
until, that is, he was cajoled into
joining the Special Reserve Air
Force in 1927 by a wing
commander from the nearby base at
Waddington. Jocelyn described her
father modestly but it was clear that
he was a man of exceptional
character with a natural flying
ability and a good eye for strategy.
He earned much respect from his
colleagues through a waggish sense
of humour and an incredible
practical and innovative ability. He
was credited with designing and
building the famous vaulting-horse
in Stalag Luft 111 which, apart
from being used by prisoners of war
to keep fit, also served as
camouflage whilst escapees
tunnelled beneath it.
Not entirely unscathed Roger
survived the war and returned to
farming at his cherished
Lincolnshire village home.
Together with his records and his
family’s subsequent forage for
further information Jocelyn
published a book in 2014 defining
more fully the extent of Roger’s
talents and achievements. The book
is entitled ‘Wapitis Wellingtons and
Binderband’
There’s an interesting sequel to this
story, but hardly competitive: our
esteemed club secretary, David
Allen, was recently dining at a
hostelry in Feltwell the landlord of
which being Chris Samuels a one-
time member of our society. Chris
renamed his inn, The Wellington, to
commemorate the aeroplane’s
activity at RAF Feltwell during
WW2. Wing Commander Roger
Maw DFC flew many missions in
Wellingtons; as did our late
president, Wing Commander Ken
Wallis (James Bond’s stunt double
in the film ‘You Only Live Twice’).
Chris was a past pupil at Methwold
High School and David was a past
teacher at the same school; the
former introduced the latter to

Plan Update Mens Shed
Shaping the future of Saham Toney!
Our landscape consultant has now
concluded her work on the village
character assessment and the design
guide for Saham Toney and she has
presented her results to the Working
Group who are presently reviewing it.
The Call for Sites, which is the first
of three stages in a process to allocate
sites in the Neighbourhood Plan,
resulted in 15 sites being put forward
for consideration and the locations of
the sites are available on our website
(www.stnp2036.org).
We have received confirmation from
AECOM, the independent
organisation that will carry out the
site assessments, that we have been
accepted for their Technical Support
package; this is also being funded by
a government grant. AECOM have
advised that their programme of work
will last until the end of March 2019.
The next village presentation to
update parishioners on the
Neighbourhood Plan will be at 7:30
pm on Friday 7th December at the
Wells Cole Community Centre; this
will be attended by our local MP,
George Freeman. The presentation
will include more details on the Site
Allocations – including the number of
new homes proposed, the Village
Character Assessment and the Design
Guide.

The Patients Participation Forum
recently held a successful Saturday
morning Walk-in Flu Vaccination
Clinic at the Watton Surgery with
nearly 100 patients taking advantage
of the clinic to have their flu
vaccinations.
While patients waited for the
vaccination they were served
refreshments. This provided an
opportunity for patients to meet
members of the PPG and to raise any
queries, suggestions or ideas on how
to drive the Surgery forward.
The PPG would like to thank Tescos
for their support in providing the
refreshments and other businesses in
the Town who allowed Posters/Flyers
advertising the event to be displayed
on their premises.
Age Uk had supported the event and
were present at the Surgery to talk to
patients about their Social Prescribing
Service.
Mr Tom Thurston, Chairman of the
PPG, said that this was the first event
that the PPG and Surgery had run
together and its success would give
the PPG members confidence to
undertake future events. The PPG
would also like to thank the Surgery
Staff who came in, voluntarily, on the
Saturday morning to help run the
Clinic.

Well here we are again, doesn't time
fly. Usually this time of year things
seem to slow down but not at
Wayland Mens Shed it would seem,
with the weather being so good for
October our members have managed
to catch up in our Garden with work
progressing well towards getting it
finished, with winter and the colder
weather fast approaching there is not
much chance of using the garden any
time soon but we will have a good
start when spring arrives in the
coming year, well done chaps and this world famous RHS show has

Watton Twinning Association Catch Up
Our committee and members have
had several events to keep us busy
over the past 2 months. In September
we had a Tombola Stall at the
Carnival, the weather was fine and
there was a very good turnout of
townsfolk, which always helps in
making a successful Carnival Day for
the organisers and everyone who was
involved on the day.
In October we held our very
successful 3rd Oktoberfest, with
many thanks to Cindy, Graham and
the staff of The Bell, Saham Toney

Many thanks to all those who have
contributed to fundraising for a
‘Families Matter Keyworker’ for
Watton, following the wonderfully
supported Cocktail Party held at St
Mary’s on October’s Harvest
Weekend. The momentum continues!

and several extremely good singers
and musicians over the course of the
weekend which all provides a terrific
atmosphere to the whole occasion. It
was our pleasure to welcome Watton
Town Mayor Tina Kiddell to formally
open the event along with her Consort
Sylvia (her mum) and great to see her
dad join in also, as well as Deputy
Mayor Pat Warwick and lots of our
members along with the pub regulars.
At the end of October we also had a
Tombola stall at the Watton Council

Volunteers at ADventure, Story Bags
and other family work at St Mary’s;
activities also in partnership with
Watton Churches Together and the
Children’s Centre. The Norfolk

Unfortunately the weather was
absolutely atrocious and very cold.
Quite a few people braved the
elements for the fireworks at 7pm but
the heavens opened half way through
and the bulk of the crowd retreated. A
huge thank you to the Army Cadets
who helped to put up and take down
our gazebo, they were brilliant.
Our next event will be holding a
Tombola Stall inside the marquis at
Chaston Place for The Christmas Fair
on November 25th we shall all be
submitting questionnaires concerning
the future of the Children’s Centre in
Watton has now passed. Discussion
may continue, but whatever the
outcome, we must positively go
forwards joining up the provision and
care for the wellbeing of our families.
A Keyworker would also play a
significant part in the strategy going
hoping for a fine day.
We have a young Weeze family with
2 children a boy and girl who would
like to twin with a young family in
Watton or one of the surrounding
villages. If you or anyone you know
would be interested in hosting this
family please let me know by ‘phone
or e.mail for more information.

making a link with a German family
in Weeze or just becoming a member
to meet our other members socially

forwards for community cohesion
across the different ethnic groups,

Recently seven ladies flew from Stanstead on the 10th October, to Paphos in Cyprus for a
friendly away match played at Episkopi Garrison. The match, played on Thursday 11th
October, was a good humoured affair, largely thanks to the ladies from the camp. It was
declared a tactical draw. After such a strenuous afternoon the evening was spent at Sophies
local Taverna. With good food, drink, great company and much laughter was enjoyed by all.
The next few days were spent making the most of the hot sunny weather, exploring the local
sights, some very historic, that Paphos has to offer, before flying home on Monday 15th.
