I. TRACK INFORMATION

• Prerequisites for AH MUSC 202: AH Introduction to Music Theory (100-level).

• AH MUSC 202 serves as prerequisite for AH Case Studies in Music (300-level).
• AH MUSC 202 is compulsory for all Performing Arts students.

This is a course in the UCR Musicology track and of the Special Programme Performing Arts.

II. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course builds on the topics of AH Introduction to Music Theory. It studies the theory of
Western Music from the Middle Ages to the 20th century and expands on the topics dealt with in the
100-level course. Its four main elements are (1) analysis, (2) studies of the sources of western music
theory (3) harmony and counterpoint, and (4) notation (including mensural notation and tablature).
In this course, students will apply their knowledge and understanding of western music
theory (including its notation, keys, intervals, scales, etc., as well as the basics of harmony and voice
leading) in written work. AH MUSC 202 will go beyond the textbooks and students will be
encouraged to study original sources critically. The course aims high and looks for an integrated
approach, combining a critical understanding of music theory with its application in performance.
The course and the course materials used will link each of the issues that comprise a tonal
theory curriculum, explicitly and critically connecting written theory (writing and analysis), skills
(singing, playing, and dictation), and music-making outside the theory class.
Selected works from the history of western music will be analysed. The course will also
provide an overview over sources related to the development of harmony, counterpoint, musical
forms, aesthetics, and performance. During the entire course students will further deepen their skills
by means of weekly tests and assignments.

III. STUDY LOAD

This course earns students four credits (equivalent to 7.5 ECTS). The class meets twice a week for
two hours. Preparation time is approximately 10 hours per week.
