Reflection 1

Complete the following sentences based on your tutoring experience so far:

1. I was pleased that . . .


I was pleased that I was able to achieve my goal of helping the student understand what they
were doing, which they had no clue how to do it in the beginning. I also was pleased with how
patient I was with the student.

2. I was surprised that . . .


I was surprised that I was able to explain the steps of how to get to the solution of a problem so
easily and clearly. I was surprised that I knew how to explain why the answer was what it was.

3. I was disappointed that . . .


That I got frustrated a lot and was tempted to not be patient with the student. I was disappointed
when I was not able to help the student understand the problem or how we got to the answer. It
was frustrating when that happened especially when I tried multiple ways of explaining it.

4. I am grateful for . . .
I am grateful for the student’s patience with me and the gratitude they showed me once they
realized they could finish the assignment on their own.

5. I wish I had . . .
I wish I had prepared more for the tutoring session. I wish I had known what I was helping the
student with before the study session so I could have prepared different strategies to help them
understand the topic better.

6. Other thoughts . . .
I can see even though my first tutor session wasn’t with an actual grade school student, that this
service learning assignment will help me a lot with developing my teaching style and skills and
will help me see the many different ways that different students learn. I am excited to see how
the next tutor session goes.
