Cologne: the Feedback Studios group

The group was formed byJohannes Fritsch, Rolf Gelhaar, Clarence Badow, and Mesias
Marguash ca; all from the influence of Stockhausen. Especially S timmung and Mantra were
quite influential. Other composers were loosely associated, such as Claude Vivier and Peter
Eotvos. While the music scene in Germany shifted its attention from Stockhausen

toward the music of Lachenmann and WolfgangRihm, the group of the Feedback Studios
seems to be fotgotten as well even though they remained active.
An interesting aspect of the Soup is the aspect of melody in their work. This is in shatp
contrast to Grisey and Murail who avoid melody in their early compositions. This sense for
melody is obvious in Maiguashca's work FMehdies, as well as in Vivier's late works, starting
with lane! Child. Besides the melodic aspect, perhaps under the influence of Stockhausen,
the techniques of Ring Modulation and Frequency Modulation are often used tn a ''rartery of
ways to generate chords, timbres, and melodies.
