TITLE: Production Technology on Non-Traditional Machining Objective

OBJECTIVE

1. To design a basic NC program for Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) wire cut.

2. To machine a product using the Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) wire cut.
INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND
In 1770, the EDM machining was discovered by an English Scientist and observed by Joseph Priestly.
Although, the electrical discharge machining was not fully taken in 1943 until the Russian scientist discovered
to learn the erosive effects can be controlled and used for machining purposes. The EDM machining process
was inexplicit and penetrate with failures. In the mid-1970’s, the EDM machining was practical in order to help
shape the metalworking industries. Next, the EDM machining techniques conveyed into a machine tool. This
EDM machine was widely available over all traditional machining processes.

THEORY
The EDM wire cut is a machine cutting that has high accuracy and more precise for any conductive
material with a complex shape. This machine was controlled by NC programming which being transfer into the
control panel of CNC appliances which control the wire in a three-dimensional pivot. The most common
material that were used for wire was brass or zinc. This machine consists of 5 axes but the common axis use
were X and Y axis.

The dielectric fluid used is water which can control its resistivity and other electrical properties. It also
can flush the cut debris away from the cutting zone which the flushing was the most important factor for
identifying the maximum feed rate. This machine is commonly used to lower the residual stress which is not
required for high cutting forces in removal of the material.

The Geometric codes which also known as G-codes used to give the instruction of the machine in what type of
motion need to be fulfil. Moreover, the G-code helps to express the position of a point in form axis. For example,
X## and Y## coordinates. The following G-codes used in this process:

1. G80 was used for canned cycle cancel.

2. G40 was used to position the location of cutting tool.
3. G01 was used to make a linear cutting.
4. G02 is used to make a circular cutting in clockwise direction.
5. G03 is used to make a circular cutting in counter clockwise direction.
Furthermore, the miscellaneous function or also known as M-code which told the program to perform. The M-
codes that were used in this process as followed.
1. M80 is used to determine the water jet pressure.
2. M82 is used to fit the wire.
3. M84 is used to form a machine rally.
4. M02 is used to end a program.
5. M00 is used to stop the program.

All these codes will remain active to do the current action and will change until a new code has been keyed into
the machine.
