Lesson Plan for the Elementary 12-4 4th Grade

Objectives:

1. By the end of the lesson students will sing thanksgiving round with zero mistakes.
2. By the end of the lesson students will define a round in music.

Standards Being Addressed:

MU: Pr4.2.4a Demonstrate understanding of the structure and the elements of music (such as rhythm, pitch, and form) in
music selected for performance.

Materials of Instruction:

Lesson Sequence:

Entry Activity: Good morning class, today I want to take the time to celebrate thanksgiving a little bit in this class. What are
some traditions you and your family have on Thanksgiving? Get together with family, eat, say what you are thankful for, etc…

Activity #1: Teaching the song

1. T: “Watch the video and just listen”


2. T: “They were thankful…”
3. S: “On this day”
4. T: “For our…”
5. S: “Work and play.”
6. T: “For our..”
7. S: “Family and friends.”
8. T: “For the”
9. S: “Love that never ends.”
10. T: “Now listen and copy”
11. T:” We are thankful on this day.”
12. S: “We are thankful on this day.”
13. T: “For our work and for our play.”
14. S: “For our work and for our play.”
15. T: “For our family and our friends.”
16. S: “For our family and our friends.”
17. T: “For the love that never ends.”
18. S: “For the love that never ends.”
19. Combine phrase 1 and 2 then 3 and 4 and then sing the whole song.
20. T: “Try magic lips this time.”
21. After magic lips as per usual do thumbs up, thumbs down, and thumbs in the middle, based on the students
response review certain areas or the entire song.

Transition: T: “Very good, now I want you to sing it all as a class and listen to what I do.” May need to demonstrate with one
student who is a strong singer if the class gets confused.

Activity #2: Singing in a round.

1. T: “What did I do earlier?”


2. S: “You sang while we were singing too.”
3. T: “Did I start at the same time?”
4. S: “No”
5. T: “In music we call that a round, it is when the song starts at different points.”
6. T: “Try it again, just me performing the round.”
7. Sing through again, to get rid of confusion and help the students better understand what a round is.
8. T: “Now lets split into groups and try it.”

Closure/ Summative Assessment: Singing the song in different groups and changing the order of the round to really practice
round form and how it is practiced in music.
