ABSTRACT
It is important to know the alkalinity of the water to perform the softening processes for the best use,
to know the amount of time that must be dosed. Alkalinity means the buffer capacity of water; The
ability of water to neutralize.
Avoiding the pH levels of the water became too basic or acidic. The alkalinity stabilizes the water at
pH levels around 7. However, when the acidity is high in the water the alkalinity, can cause conditions
harmful to aquatic life. In water chemistry, alkalinity is expressed in PPM or mg / l of calcium
carbonate equivalent. The total alkalinity of water is the sum of the three alkalinity classes; alkalinity
of carbonate, bicarbonate and hydroxide.
KEYWORDS: alkalinity, water, acidity.
